When paying for gas with a debit card- do you get the cash price?
My DH was saying how he only uses his debit card now to pay for gas, since it allows him to get the cash price.
So this morning, I stop at a Mobil on my way to work and use my debit card. The machine even asked- is this a debit or credit card? I chose debit and had to key in my PIN
Lo and behold- the pump turns on and it's the credit price- 10 cents more per gallon.
Now DH usually goes to Sunoco or Shell- so I am wondering- is it only certain gas stations that offer the cash price for debit cards?

Always. Because I won't use a gas station that DOESN'T give cash price for using debit 
I think it's ridiculous. Luckily the one closest to my house gives cash price.
ETA: The ones I go to are mobil and shell (because i use the stop and shop gas rewards points...which btw got me $1.10 off per gallon last week!)

Depends on the gas station.
There is one Mobil that I went to that did give the cash price for debit. I just went to another Mobil on Sunday and was charged the credit price for debit.

They will give the cash price if you go inside and pay with your debit, not at the pump. So stupid!

There's a Mobil in Merrick on Merrick Ave. that charges the same price cash/debit or credit. I try to stop there when I can. I never carry cash so I get screwed at the pump.

Always get the cash price with my debit card.........you're suppose to, technically it's cash, not credit.

Yes. I usually only go here for this reason. Luckily we have one close to home.
I haven't tried the debit card to get the cash price at another station. Think I will now.

not all the stations will honor this, although i think its stupid to not honor the cash price using your debit card.
i also think tha tif you happen to have like the shell credit card, they should give you a "perk" by giving you the cash price since its their credit card...

It's definitely varies from one station to the next. I've been to shells where it allows you and others where it doesn't... I too always use debit now to get the cash price. The CC's aren't giving enough cash back to make me pay the higher price

What kills me is that gas stations are like the only merchants on the planet that charge you MORE to use your card.
You don't pay more to use a credit card in Target, in a restaurant, in a supermarket.
It's ridiculous!
As if gas prices aren't already enough of a rip off!

Yeah, all the Hess stations I know just have one set price...
Unless you go to the Hess station at exit 71 in Riverhead I have "nearly" run out of gas because I refuse to use them.
Most all other Hess stations treat debit as cash. I will not pump gas at a station that does not.

I will only go to stations where debit counts as cash. The one I go to has such insane credit prices but luckily they have decent cash/debit prices too.

I was always told it was illegal to do it, but they hid it until Patterson made them show it. But, I still don't get how it's legal especially when credit card companies only charge THEM 2 or 3% for a card. They are making at least 7 cents per gallon MORE than what they would make otherwise. It's a total rip

we will probably start seeing more retailers doing it as plastic is used more frequently. Amex/V/MC all charge retailers a small percentage on charges - an "insurance" tax. They are passing their tax off on us. I don't agree with it but I get it. Why should they be taxed for how we choose to pay for gas?

I thought they got away with it bc they say it's a "discounted price" when you pay with cash. the credit price is the normal price for gas. We all know that's total BS though.

With Sunaco yes you get the cash price if you pay with debit. Mobil and Gulf still charge credit price if you use debit. I never go to them anymore.
I only go to Hess or Sunaco

The Gulf station by my house charges cash prices for debit. I think it might depend on the specific station.

It's always the credit price when I pay with debit - not the cash price. I normally use Hess or Shell (so I can use my Stop and shop points).
