but I don't see how it can happen until it's determined that people can't get it again.

And what if it is determined that you CAN get it again?
Then what?

I don't know what then, but I'm not taking a chance with my only child's life, nor mine. I get that I have the luxury to be able to work from home, and I definitely want things to go back to the way they were, but I'm not sacrificing me or my child.

Here's the thing though, you send your child to school right? There is a much higher likelihood that your child dies in a school shooting than they die of corona virus even if they get it. The mortality rate for children is infinitismal. As far as your life, unless you already have underlying conditions there is not much more of a chance of you dying from Corona than dying from complications related to the flu. Also, every time we get in a car we are taking a chance that we will get into an accident but we take that risk. People have distorted views of what will happen if they get this virus. It is completely your prerogative to stay home but we can't make everyone else stay home. It's all about what risks you are willing to take for yourself and your loved ones and this is just one of the many that we will be faced with.

Everything you just said was what I was trying to say but it wasn't coming out right.
The risk to children is so extremely low that they have more of a chance of dying in an accident on the way to school or in a school shooting like you said.
And yes, everyone can decide if they want to stay home and live off the grid indefinitely. But you can't force an entire nation to do so

Re: When do you think we will Social Distancing be done

Well, that’s one good thing about this lockdown— no school shootings. Sad thing is there probably will be a few extra when things start to go back to normal.

As for the food chain, it was a little bit bad for us here for a while. Now that we are on the downslope, things have been slowly restocked. Italy has stocked supermarkets, too. It will get better.

They are solving the problem of migrant workers here by asking people here to do it. I’m considering it because I could use the extra money, and it is something that won’t be too crowded working like in the supermarkets. I’m also about 20 minutes away from farms, so it’s pretty easy to get to.

My son has severe asthma so he's high risk. He's already been in the ICU multiple times over his life b/c he has pneumonia and strep throat, so I'm not really willing to put him in danger unless I absolutely have to.

And I really do get it - the longer things are shut down, the worse it is for our mental health and the economy. And I have friends that aren't working b/c they cut hair or work in restaurants - so I get that it's really hard for a LOT of people. But opening things back up right now is just going to cause so many more deaths until things can be in place to slow it down. And I have ZERO faith in the President to think about what's the right thing to do.

If my child had severe asthma and I had the ability to keep him home I would probably do so as well. However, the "right thing to do" is different from one family to another so this isn't as simple as saying everyone should stay home indefinitely. There have always been risks and we all will need to figure out which ones we are willing to take. There are going to be people who lose their homes, lose the ability to put food on the table, lose the ability to heat their homes, lose health insurance for themselves and their children, etc. etc. etc.

In response to these good questions, and with no anger whatsoever (though I see that others seem super angry. We are just a bunch of regular people trying to talk about a difficukt topic. People should remember that.) I'll use allcaps to signify my answers-not to scream. :)

. 22million unemployed (as of now...going up and up)? PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND THE THREAT WILL NOT BE SPENDING LOTS OF MONEY IN CERTAIN SECTORS OR PATRONIZING "OPEN" PLACES. NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO DO. JOBS WILL HAVE TO CHANGE BASED ON DEMAND.

2. Disruptions to the food supply chain (already starting and will lead to food shortages despite what the lying government tells you)? ARE THESE CAUSED BY PEOPLE STAYING IN ? I DON'T THINK SO. MORE LIKELY BY THE VIRUS AND THE FEAR AND ACTIONS IT PRODUCES, WHICH WON'T CHANGE MUCH.

3. People dying for other reasons (because there are actually other causes of death believe it or not) from people NOT going to the doctor or hospital now when they need to and people NOT being able to get the treatment for their other illnesses like cancer, etc.? EVERYONE I KNOW WHO NEEDS TREATMENT OR CHECKUPS IS GETTING THEM IN CONSULTATION WITH DOCTORS ON HOW TO APPROACH. FEWER VIRUS INFECTIONS AND NO SEOND WAVE WILL ACTUALLY FREE UP SAFE SPACES AND RESOURCES FOR THESE THINGS TO HAPPEN.

4. Higher rates of suicide, murder, looting, depression, addiction, poverty, homelessness and domestic violence? IT HAS BEEN GRATIFYING TO SEE PHILANTHROPIC AND OTHER RESPONSES TO ISSUES HERE. ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH HELP OFFERED. ORGABNIZATIONS HELPING THOSE WITH ABUSE AND ADDICTION PROBLEMS. THESE THINGS WERE PROBLEMS BEFORE CORONA AND WILL CONTINUE, BUT THERE ARE WORKAROUNDS.

Releasing people into a second wave or spike will only create more death, loss, grief, and setbacks.
The mental health of grieving children and grandchildren of those needlessly taken from us won't be great for society. Until they can be fairly certain of there being no second spike, I don't see what else we can do. I recommend kilngklang's Atlantic article, and the post from one of our own who is a nurse. This is not a simple flu.

People can be "released," and it may make them feel better, but it is likely to cause more suffering, disability (perhaps permanent), death, grief, and financial loss than relief if they are being released into a second wave. I don't like this. I just know it.

The majority of my circle are in healthcare. They are SEVERELY traumatized by this and very jaded about opening the system back up. I can not say I blame them at all...what they are seeing daily is horrific and I am repeatedly hearing that the numbers are being significantly downplayed. But they also don't see the other side of this regarding the economy.

This is not a unilateral issue. Its not just about health. Obviously nobody wants more death and the goal is for health but you can't keep suppressing the economy for all of the reasons listed above.

If schools opened tomorrow, my kids would be going. If my job opened tomorrow, I am going. I think the option for people to either continue to stay home or re-enter society should be provided without penalty but I think we need to get this moving again in a slow, responsible, thoughtful manner.

I mean, I’m glad it’s working and the numbers are dropping. It’s great news. But man, hearing that May15th and knowing it’ll prob just get pushed back again.... I’m sorta ready to risk it. Not gonna lie

The way I understand it, the models are living and breathing and in real time. So if we have reached the apex, that determination is based on our real time actions--staying in. It's only the apex if we continue to stay in or something changes in a positive drection re: fighting the virus.

ETA: About flattening the curve, it's very little consolation to me that if someone I love needs a respirator, there is more likely to be one, since stats say that 4 out of 5 people put on respirators wind up dying. This and other facts that I can't get over inform my opinions, which may seem harsh. This is terrifying.

I hear you. I am not ready to risk it just yet and I knew this was coming. I know school is most likely closed for the year, just hopefully we can gradually start opening things and that school will resume in September.

I, like you, am working from home and getting paid. We are very lucky.

You are failing to realize that this isn't the reality for many, many people right now. We cannot sit on our perch and judge people who have the choice between staying home and not being able to feed their families or risking the virus so their children aren't eating out of dumpsters. Your rebuttals do not apply to the vast majority of people right now.

If you would like to stay home for the rest of your life that's fine. But you have to at least try to see this from the perspective of others. You may not feel the way you do if your children were hungry and you had no where to live.

I agree - I was on a zoom with friends last night, all of whom have the ability to work from home and are experiencing little to no financial distress from this situation but that is not the case for the good majority of the American people. I don't think anyone is saying "Yes lets reopen everything tomorrow with reckless abandon." But there need to be steps taken soon to reopen the economy with or without a vaccine or treatment. And believe it or not people will go out to eat. People will go shopping to buy necessities other than food. People will send their children to school because they will need to go to work.

Also, on another note, I don't know one person who has gone on a well visit during this time, not one person who has gotten a routine mammogram, colonoscopy, or any other preventative exam. Children and babies are missing important vaccinations for other illnesses.
I do know people personally in distress who have not received appropriate treatment because they are afraid to go to a hospital or urgent care provider.

Honestly the list of ramifications to keeping things the way they are goes on and on and on.

I agree.

Also, I’m neither seeing anyone saying they want a permanent lockdown nor do they want to go back to work tomorrow. I think once rapid testing and temperature taking is in place then we can start to slowly open, but that takes time. You cannot overwhelm the health systems or else you are risking both people with and without COVID dying. Just look at the post by maybebaby.

Lastly, just to add to the food shortages conversation, Smithfield, one of the largest producers of pork in the country, is one of the biggest hotspots for COVID in the country because they did not take proper precautions. Article

To speak about the food supply, 'people staying in' is not the cause of the shortages. Trade restrictions and border policies concerning migrant workers are the cause. There are already fewer meat and dairy plants up and running, then when a food plant that already relies heavily on migrant workers (like the previously mentioned Smithfield plant) has a huge increase in Covid-19 infections, they are shut down completely.

There is a huge food shortage coming. Even if we start by having Americans plant and harvest, not
only will costs will go up astronomically, but this season is already done. Farmers are not planting their annual crops. Locally speaking, even if the lock down is lifted in the next month or so, they are still not planting and the time to plant will be over. To avoid this, they need to be planting now.

This harvest season will be slim pickings no matter what. Add the meat and dairy production problems to that, there will be less meat, less dairy and less produce. Forget grain crops as well. The food we do get will be imported and come at a higher cost.

Yep they are just automatically cancelling all well visits and non emergencies.
My elderly FIL has a catheter and needs to see his urologist every month to get it changed and flushed, and they left a message the other day that they aren't seeing patients.
He happens to be in a nursing/rehab facility right now, but if he wasn't, what the heck was he supposed to do? That can lead to infection. So then what? Go to the hospital?
It's disturbing.

Very true. Or the people that haven't gone because they lost their health insurance after losing their jobChat Icon

I was suppose to go for a follow up test with my gyno but pushed it off for another month. I'm hoping things will loosen up by then.

It's disturbing.

really i am suprised they would cancel something that has to be done.

I had video appointment with my DD derm and he was able to prescribe something but he did say if it get worse or I think I need to bring her in they are there for emergency appointments and thats for dermatologist! I cant believe they told him they weren't seeing patients if it has to be changes monthly!
