Re: When do you think schools will reopen?

Yes, they need to come up with a plan where kids can go back in September and I've heard of many of them. Unfortunately I don't think many people will be happy with the solutions. How do you split a 5 day week between two groups? Which kids get the MWF instruction and which get TT? Who gets the morning slot and who gets the afternoon? My daughter learns best and behaves best in the morning. She'd be a mess in afternoon hours only. How do you seat the kids apart when most classrooms in the past decade or two have moved away from individualized desks to the big long communal ones where the kids sit next to each other and share one table? Having the kids wear masks, the kids will still constantly play with them I'm sure. Have the kids wash their hands more often- who is overseeing this? How do you do it in classrooms without sinks? Who is wiping down the handles between each kid touching it? Eating inside the classroom instead of a big cafeteria is okay, but they can't eat with masks on, so they still need to be far apart. They'll be shouting and germs and food will still be flying about and what can they do for recess and playtime if they have to be so far apart? I don't know. There are only so many solutions for something like this. I'm sure they will all be discussed and there will be school, but it will not go back to "normal". And they will try to push online education more and more. SOOOO many districts are pushing daily classes on technology learning multiple times a day to the teaching staff right now. On top of all this, how do you get the kids back and forth from school if bus drivers and bus companies have been going under and now we need 2x as many buses to have one kid per seat?? Right now my daughter is shoved into a row with 3 kids PER SEAT! 3! They will be touching each other non stop unless they have one kid per bench.

I don’t think this whole thing is the best idea, but it’s the hand we have been given. At least there are no school shootings...

Re: When do you think schools will reopen?

While I agree with BaysideForever in that it is difficult and impractical to implement all those things....the hard and ugly truth is that we may NOT be able to do all those things.....and so at some point there is going to have to be a risk/benefit analysis of whether we either (1) do everything and anything we can to make sure zero people get this virus ever again, even if it means that our children will no longer go to school and will grow up to be uneducated, unsocialized zombies, or (2) open the schools.

I just think that this is a lame excuse. Get the best and brightest brains together and figure it out. We can and will overcome this if we try but if we just sit back and say there is no way to do it or this is the best we've got, we can't handle it, there are too many moving parts, etc of course no one will figure it out. Cuomo needs to stop with these ridiculous briefings. Enough is enough. Get to work, formulate a plan and start putting it to action. Then maybe give us an update every week or two with REAL information instead of all this nonsense.

And Cuomo saying every life is "priceless" is a scary mentality. If every life is priceless we would not send young men and women to war to face an almost certain death for many of them. They do that to protect our freedom. Who is protecting our freedom now? NO ONE.

Yes! We have overcome way worse than this virus. Look at the wars, the terrorism, the other diseases we have faced and overcome in the history of our nation.
Why are we looking at this one virus- which isn't even as deadly as some others- as the thing that is going to end our way of life was we know it?
Throwing up our hands and saying- oh well, I guess this is it.
I'm so confused.

I’m totally confused as well! Agree with all of this.

Macy’s has a plan to re-open 775 stores in the next 6-8 weeks but let’s keeps physical schools closed for several months. God, I hope they get it together for this fall.

I read that statement as a response to backlash he must of gotten that he wants to eliminate teachers.
He is trying to say- this re imaged school will not do that.
That is what i read it as- damage control

I took at like that as well. He never expected the backlash he got, because he believes he is the son of God and everyone worships him.
But I took that as, if we get a second wave in November or something, or a massive hurricane like Sandy that closes schools for 2-3 weeks, then there is an adequate way for children to temporarily learn at home. God, I hope I am interpreting that right. Chat Icon

I saw that guy he had on speaking about technology and the future of education. I am curious. I think it was more of a statement saying, “hey we are going to try this right now because of the situation.”

It’s just a comfort thing at this point.

I had my first nightmare class on Zoom today. It was the first class, so lots of intros and what the course is about. It’s academic English for non-native speakers at a level of, say, upper-intermediate. Since it’s specialized (academic English), I need to teach them how to read complicated texts, write papers in academic language, presentations, grammar, etc. There are a lot of cultural barriers at this one university.

They wouldn’t turn on their cameras and mics. I understand the camera part, but they need to turn on their mics. I asked 5 times. Finally, by the end they got it, but this class is going to be tough to teach since it focuses on speaking as well. All my other classes are fine.

So, yeah, I’m curious about what this technology guy is going to do.

Yes he is definitely back tracking though I will say when he made the statement at first I took it has he wanted to upgrade technology within the classroom.

I am really hoping it’s September and this is for I guess In case it happens again but I swear 2nd wave or not we better not shut down again. Honestly I don’t even think he will get anyone to corporate if he does try to shut down again! Hopefully testing will be like the flu and if someone goes to the dr they know right away.

I don't think we can ever "shut down again" because people won't do it. We were lied to the first time and I hope people aren't fooled twice.

I teach HS science. How can kids adequately learn science at home with no chemicals, microscopes, etc? Sure, I can “teach” science, but kids need to do science. There are some easy home things I can do, but those are elementary level type activities.

There are lots of science experiments they can do at home. For example, you can show your high schoolers how to make a baking soda volcano using kitchen items Chat Icon if they tell you they did this in kindergarten you can have those little ingrates read from the textbook the rest of the year.

That should satisfy all the NYS testing requirements. Lol

Chat Icon exactly. Or maybe put some seeds in. Wet Paper towel and baggie and watch them germinate. You know - high level science. They are all going to want a career in STEM.

Oh absolutely! You can have them make paper cup phones, but really who are they going to talk to? The beauty of science is that it doesn't need to be hands on at all. You can even teach it over the phone if you had to, like if your internet is ever down.

This is exactly what my 3rd grader just had for their science-the Lima bean lab, lol, one of the teachers did it at home and recorded, and the kids had slides to fill out with observations etc...
