What's your "saving money" trick at the Grocery store?

Besides coupons, where do you cut corners, but save $$ and still get a good product?

I started buying more food in the price club. It seems to last longer and is less expensive. If you go once a month it will save you some and fill in at the supermarket with the "small" stuff.

I rarely buy name brand stuff. At Waldbaums I buy Americas Choice everything. It has the same content as the expensive stuff but is usually a lot cheaper

Re: What's your "saving money" trick at the Grocery store?

When one of our favorite products are on sale at the grocery store, we buy as much as possible (as long as it's not perishable).
I've become anal about soda fridge packs, b/c of the sales, I refuse to pay more than $3.50 for them, b/c they'll go on sale for $2 each, we'll stock up.
It also helps b/c when you're out, you don't have to run to the store, you have backup on hand.

Re: What's your "saving money" trick at the Grocery store?

I buy whole boneless chicken breasts when they are at $1.69 lb only and make my only chicken cutlets, stir fry pieces , etc .... I stock up.

I buy whole chicken at $0.69 lb and make a roast chicken. We eat it one day, then another night I'll take the pieces and make something else (chicken & mushrooms, chicken stirfry, etc...)

I stock up on soda when it is on sale. Napkins too.

Butter - when on sale I buy a ton and I freeze it.

Stop & Shop brand frozen vegetables, canned vegetables/beans, broth, etc ...

I don't buy too many generic items, but I will buy S&S brand of spices. IMO, it's the same exact stuff!

I also use King Kullen coupons at S&S, they accept competitors, but don't advertise it. I've saved $40 in the past 4 weeks just using the KK coupons!

I have a shower curtain, so I have not tried it. I heard mixed reviews though. try doing a search on the home board.

Thats such good thinking bc soda NEVER goes bad BUT when I am at the supermarket...I am too lazy to carry the cases. I just bought (3) 2 liter bottles of soda this week bc I didnt want to carry 5 million bags. Now I have no soda Chat Icon

I have started doing a lot of my grocery shopping at Target. It is SO much cheaper than SnS or Waldbaums. I still have to go to a regular supermarket for fresh vegetables, though.

I do the same thing- luckily for me they are in the same chopping center

Target has eddy's ice cream for less then $3- every where else it's $5.99

I leave DH at home. Seriously, he puts so much extra into the cart that we can live without.

I dig for the milk/yogart with the furthest expiration date.

If meat is on sale, I will buy in bulk and freeze.

I usually buy only things on sale

I buy a decent amount of store brands (depends on the product though)

Have to start cutting coupons again!

Re: What's your "saving money" trick at the Grocery store?

I never pay more then 2.50 for a 12 pack of soda and never more then .99 for a 2 liter.

When chicken breast is $1.69lb i buy 2 family packs and cut and clean to my liking and then Vacuum seal for freezer.
(same with chopped meat)
Never paid full price for ice cream. something is always on sale and can find a flavor that i like for every brand.

Never buy fresh veggies, eggs, milk at the supermarket. I go to a fruit stand (3 guys from brooklyn). Sometimes the prices are half of what the supermarkets is charging.

For holiday meat, such as corned beaf for st. pats, i buy it a few weeks in advance and freeze. the price is always more expensive the week of cause they know people are looking to buy.

Shop around. I buy some things at pathmark, some at waulbaums, and some at c-town cause that is who is having the sale on things and they are close together and not wasting money on gas. Dont just buy at a store cause it is easier and you are there (unless it is something that you need for that night dinner and no time to go to other store)

Leaving the kids home. I always spend way more than I need to when they come (mostly on junk). They ask for everything and I can't even think straight when they are there with me.

I mean you can try it, some people like it, I just think it is a waste. Nothing can replace good old fashioned elbow grease when it comes to cleaning the tub.....Chat Icon

Re: What's your "saving money" trick at the Grocery store?

I take advantages of all their sales especially when they are 10 for $10 (on non perishable items)

I don't always buy the name brand (it doesn't make it better)

If it is not on sale, I don't buy it.

We stock up on things like frozen veggies, cereal in BJ's, face care, aspirin (last longer & is cheaper in the long run)

Use my "Shopping" card from the supermarket to get coupons for the next purchase & get more money off their store sales

Re: What's your "saving money" trick at the Grocery store?

I stock up when things are on sale - especially soda. I drink a lot of it and refuse to pay more then $1 per bottle. Same with things like canned tuna and marinades, salad dressings, etc.

When I can't get to costco, I get family packs of meat to break down & freeze.

I scaled down the variety of cleaning products -- ammonia mixed with water cleans the kitchen better then anything else in a spray bottle.

I was very excited to receive 4 $10 coupons from Waldbaum's yesterday! The food order has to be $50 but that's pretty easy.

Costco & Target are great for bottled water, paper goods, bath stuff and laundry supplies.
