I'm getting it for my nephew (who's 3) because he's soooo into my brother's ipad and uses it all the time. I figured he can get his own version that he can play educational games on it, take pictures with it, and take videos with it.

See, I wouldn't bother with it if someone in the house has an ipad/tablet. I can't see that this will be better and it will end up going unused. IMO.

We have an ipad and I wouldnt even think of buying my DC a leappad, why would he use it? And the apps seem really expensive (and most kids apps on the ipad are free/1.99/etc)

Re: What's The Phenomena With The LeapPad Everyone Is Searching For?

DHs aunt gave my kids ages 2 and 4 an extremely generous TRU gift card for their birthdays and we got each of them their own leap pad. They no longer fight over my computer, DHs touchpad, or the one explorer we have.

I love it because:
1. There is a camera, they can then manipulate photos;
2. There is an art studio where they can paint, draw and have fun;
3. The books (we have a dinosaur one) can read, you can touch a word for it to tell you the word, it tells you facts about dinosaurs, and we have discussions about the dinosaurs after we read the book together;
4. The game cartridges work for both the explorer and the leap pad;
5. The games loaded from the computer are fun;
6. The games you can purchase are educational and adjust up and down for the kids.

They teach:
emotions (Ne How Kailan - what would you do in the situation using verbal and non verbal cues)
math (add and subtract - Cars - there is some violence in this game. It does not thrill me that there is violence but we talk about good and bad play. We talk about how we don't use guns in our home. We talk about what to do if DS found a gun (don't pick up and tell an adult).
social studies (we don't have the game but there is one out there)
logic puzzles (Mr. Pencil and a few others have logic games)
Hygiene - We love the teeth brushing game. DS plays with it a lot.
Science - dinosaur game, wal-e pixar pals game

DD also likes the alphabet video. It teaches common sounds.

On the computer there are also a bunch (100) of other games, videos and books for about $7-10.

We limit them to 20 minutes per day. If I let them they would play for hours. They love it and play with it every day.

TRU is having a sale right now and I stocked up on 5 games to give over the holidays and for other family members to give the kids.

I would recommend the leap pad for kids age 2-6. I think that an older DC (7-8) might like it if they did not already have a DSi, Wii, PS3, or ipad/touchpad at their disposal.

Also, according to a post I read on another website - if you preorder it to the store at Barnes and Nobel tonight - there will be a huge coupon soon for black friday that will make the leappad $60.

Well I don't want my almost 2 and 3 year olds using my iPad, I want to use it Chat Icon and not having to worry about it breaking! If you have, say, a 4, almost 5 year old, then I think it's fine to let them use your iPad, but I try to avoid that. Plus the games are simpler and easier to "get" than on the iPad and it doesn't have wifi so there is no chance of him turning it on or deleting anything, he literally cannot screw it up.

It's basically a kids IPad and for my tech savvy DD it was the perfect toy! She LOVES it!

Kids can screw up an IPad. There is nothing they can't play with or get into with the Leap Pad and that is what I like. IPads, Smartphones...........you always run the risk of them screwing something up in the split second you're not looking. The Leap Pad is hers to do whatever she wants with.

I felt the same way. We have 2 ipads in my house and 3 yr old DS is a pro with the iPad. But there are 2 reasons why he is getting the leap pad. 1)a family member wants to. buy it for him and 2)I don't let him bring our ipads anywhere... Leappad he can bring to grandmas, in the car, etc.

that's the exact point. It's not that little kids will intentionally break the ipad but when they are at that age, they are careless and just don't know any better.

Re: What's The Phenomena With The LeapPad Everyone Is Searching For?

My DS got the Leappad for his 3rd birthday, and he loves it. When we go in the car and we don't bring it, I will still let him play with my iphone. However, he has accidentally broken DH's ipod TWICE, by dropping on the ground outside. He didn't throw it, he just dropped it. At least when he drops the leappad, it is not that fragile.

The downside to the leappad is that it is a lot slower than ipod/ipad, and sometimes DS wants to use ipod because he is used to it. But overall, I am happy with my decision to purchase it, and DS really does play with it.
