What size should a formal dining room be?

What's too small and what's ideal for a FDR?

Re: What size should a formal dining room be?

How big of a table? Absolute bare minimum, you need the width and length of the table, plus about 3' all around, so for a 3' wide table, the room needs to be 9' wide. If it's 6' long, you need the room to be 12' long.
That's just for the table and chairs. If you want furniture, you of course need more room.

Some tables need slightly more space.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ours is currently 18 x 15, but I'm pretty certain most dining rooms are smaller. Because we host/entertain a lot, it's one of the first things I look at on real estate listings. I would say the majority are 15 x 13 or smaller, even in newer homes.

I guess I am spoiled too. My current DR is 12x17. It's huge.

A few homes I am looking at the DR is around 11x11. Ugh. Do you really say no to a house based on the dining room? Not sure...I go back and forth on this. I know my furniture won't fit. Great.

Our current house has a dining room about 10 x 10 (don't know the exact measurement). We have a table with 6 chairs and long buffet cabinet. It doesn't feel tight because we have an open floorplan and an 8 foot sliding glass door on one end.

The house we are buying has a DR 19.5 x 12.5. Its HUGE!

I actually bought a home that chose to close in the formal dining room and make it a 3rd bedroom. My casual dining area is shared with my living room and there's decent space in the kitchen too.

Re: What size should a formal dining room be?

Mine is 17 x almost 11

We bought our furniture to fit the room so we COULD have been okay with something smaller but I wouldn't have been happy.

Ours is 12 x 23.5ft and I love it. We knew we needed a big dining room because I come from a big family (1 of 5 kids) and DH has 2 siblings who are both married so when both families are together we have with all SO's and us 16 adults plus another 6 kids.

Our room was actually the "bonus" room and we made it into the diningroom. What was the diningroom is now our EIK area (we basically took the wall down between the kitchen and old diningroom) and we have a square table that seats 8 nicely.

For us, if the diningroom was big enough it wasn't for us.

Re: What size should a formal dining room be?

Ours is 13x19. My table is open fully (2 leaves, seats 12 comfortably). It's definitely big and a formal room.

eta:
For Thanksgiving I was able to add another 6' table perpendicular and guests still had room to walk around the entire table without anyone squeezing in.

We have a china cabinet on one of the 13' walls & buffet on a small wall (between 2 openings). I still have another wall to fill.
