My puggle is great - when DH and I are around.

During the week while we are at work he's bored and gets destructive with small things. Today, the remote. A few weeks ago, my cookbooks.

What kinds of toys can I leave for him while we are both gone all day? Anything I get has to be indestructible because he can rip through it.

Suggestions? I love him to bits but I'm going out of my mind.

He is confined to only the living room. He's never destroyed furniture and is fully housebroken but he loves to CHEW!

Re: What do you leave for your dog "to do" all day?

Before my last dog passed away, we kept a toy blanket. When we got home at night, we'd put most of her toys in the middle of her blanket (an old comforter just for her) and wrap them all up. While we were home, she'd only get one or two chew toys (unless we were playing with her with something specific) - nothing from the blanket, though.

When we leave in the morning, we'd take our her toy blanket and toys for her. This way, the toys were sort of "new" because she didn't have access to them when we're home. It did help!

Misty has a toybox with -
A big nylon pull/chew toy
A few sterilized bones
A basted knuckle bone
A kong
A couple stuffed toys.

I generally come home to find a few scattered around so I know she pulls them out and plays with them.

Re: What do you leave for your dog "to do" all day?

My dog is like this. That's why we got him a little sister doggie. Chat Icon She is his toy, but even she doesn't want to play as much as my boy does. It breaks my heart, there isn't much that can entertain my boy other than if we are running and chasing and keeping him active. It's never enough, it's so sad. But yes, having a friend here with him helps.

have you tried small rawhide bones ?
those occupied my dog, he can chew and they last a long time.

Plus they taste better than the remote. Not that I would personally know

Have you tried a kong? Stuff it with smething like peanut butter and freeze it overnight. It entertains my dog for hours.

Or a treat ball- its like a puzzle, I'm not exactly sure how they work but the dog has to interact with the ball to get it to give treat. They're fairly expensive- like 30 dollars, but cheaper than replacing whatever the dog chews up everyday.

I leave him a Kong and a Nylabone and a few of his toys that are not dangerous. He is no longer crated and less destructive as he used to be. I have lost shoes, cordless phone, magazines, a sofa cushionb, 3 dog beds, clothes, blankets, etc...but he is getting better!

We leave out nylabones, tennis balls and those "indestructible" toys like the ones made out of fire hose. Sometimes they're still in the same place when we get back, so I think the dogs just sleep most of the day, but I feel better leaving something for them to do Chat Icon

Katie was confined to the kitchen until she was about 1 1/2 because she was destructive. We kept the radio on for her and gave her a kong before we left.
She still gets the kong but has free roam of the house and doesn't need the radio.

Re: What do you leave for your dog "to do" all day?

She has an area that is a pretty good size. We put gates up and she is kept next to where we come in (we come in through the garage). She has a window so it is always bright and the area is around five feet by five feet. She has a big braided bone that she loves to chew on and that is always in there, she also has her bed in there, a padded mat to lay on in addition to the bed, she has her woobie to play/sleep with, she has usually between 5-8 other random toys that she likes. A lot of times I will give her either the braided bone, a pretzel shaped bone or a little rawhide type bone to chew on. She enjoys those and doesn't need much else. She is also rarely home for long periods of time - six hours, on average, at the MOST and that is not everyday - it is more like 2/3 times a week. She is spoiled lol. We give Char a treat before we leave and she is usually great when left alone.

The treat ball and kong toys were also a favorite of my puppy.

I also would hide treats all around the living room for her to find - places that weren't easy to get to and made her think about how she would retrieve them, but that wouldn't require destroying anything to get to.

If you can go for a walk before you leave for work that might help too, since the more you tire them out the less destructive they usually are.

we have a bunch of toys for them, and while its rare that we are both out all day.. when we are, we open the big bay window blinds and fashion a window seat for them to sit in and they really love it... they are in the window when we leave and one or both are still in the window when we get home with I am sure alot of up and down in between...they love to watch the world go by...

Ditto. Chat Icon

Eventually, our goal is to build trust for Brinkley and allow access to one room. Then another, etc.

In the meantime, we remove temptation from his level. He hasn't jumped on furniture or counters yet, so we keep the remote on the high console table. We keep anything breakable off the coffee table to thwart the tail swipe. Books and yummy dishtowels are on shelves or counters. That kind of thing.

We only leave one toy in his crate - a Nylabone. We do leave the tv on, tuned to the Urge Blues channel, so the silence doesn't get too much.

He's got a Kong, a rope chew, and two stuffed toys that make noise. Other than that, we are his toys. Chat Icon

So far so good and the only thing he's destroyed is his crate pad but that was weeks ago.

I recently adopted a 2 year old puggle and I just started the introduction to her crate last night...

we've been confining her in just the kitchen but she's been breaking through the gate and into the bedrooms and going to the bathroom in the house. So crate training here we come. I agree that they do need a walk or some sort of exercise before you leave to tire them out.

I am going to buy a kong and try that too.

Re: What do you leave for your dog "to do" all day?

I leave the tv or a radio on to distract them from the outside noises that can rile them up...(mail man, garbage man, kids, trucks, etc.) It's not on too loud, regular volume.

Also, I always make sure that all his toys (only the one can be destructive) are right in front of him when I leave.

I also hide all the remotes.

Re: What do you leave for your dog "to do" all day?

I buy Teemu Tuffies - Tuff Scale 8-10. He can still chew them up but it takes him a very long time (weeks) to chew up a Tuffie 10. Whereas a standard toy he can get the squeaker out in under 3 minutes (no exaggeration). He likes them because they are soft.

He also likes the bones made of tennis ball material. Plus he has the cats to play with when he is home, and the run of the house - although usually he is at doggie day care.

Also, I make sure all papers are put away or he will tear them to pieces. I can't even leave stuff on the table because Anabelle (my cat) will knock it of and Teemu will chew it up!

Peanut was confined to the kitchen, until he chewed through the gate. Then we got a note from management that he cries all day long. Now he is confined to the crate and a shock collar. Peanut has severe separation anxiety.

Maybe he could just use more exercise? Usually dogs with chewing issues really have pent up energy that they need to release through exercise/activity. Isn't there any other way other than crating him all day and using a "shock" collar? I just feel very sad for Peanut based on this post. Chat Icon

Peanut wimpers and does not get shocked. He barked once and did get shocked. He honestly is not left alone that much. My dh brings him to work. Also Peanut gets a lot of exercise. So much that now we have to restrain his exercise since he might have hurt himself.

I am glad to hear this. He sounded so sad from your post. I know my dog has nervous issues, but we also don't leave him alone more than 3 hrs a day and we try to give him plenty of exercise. Also, we leave the tv on to drown out outside noise so he isn't upset when he hears things and doesn[t bark all day.Chat Icon

My dh and I do everything we can to not use the collar. Also I tried leaving the tv on and the radio on, but he needs human contact. We think he might have been abused in his previous home. We adopted him from other owners.

Yes, sounds like he may have been. So so sad...I am so glad you guys try to do the best for him to be happy . Sad doggies break my heart.Chat Icon We always say if we didn't take our boy, we bet someone else would have gotten rid of him due to his nervous ways...we are glad WE have him so we can do right by him.
