It angers me to hear that there are teachers not working. Honestly, I do not know ANY who have not been. My co-workers are ALL doing what I am doing and my own kids teachers have been AMAZING. There are not enough hours in the day to do all that we have been doing.

I am sorry for those of you who have had bad experiences... I wish I were your childs teacher... we have dance parties every morning! Chat Icon

I wish you had been my child's teacher too! She did not get one single live instruction from any teacher during the entire 3 months school was shut down.

She has the same teacher for 3 classes who posted worksheet after worksheet for each class. It didn't make me angry, just sad, until I picked up the contents of my child's school locker and looked through her binders and saw that that was all these teacher has been doing all year - worksheet after worksheet. If she did anything else, there was zero evidence. Thatmade me angry.

The math teacher introduced algebra via YouTube!

My child got homemade videos from the PE teacher!!! The technology teacher didn't even post a homemade video.

The stress and anxiety of being on the computer day in and day out all came to a head yesterday - her first day without any school work, in the form of aches and pains and general malaise that kept her in bed all day feeling off and out of sorts. Today she is a happy go-lucky-kid out bird watching in the front lawn.

Oh come on! That is unacceptable. I would be furious too.

I really hope this situation has really highlighted to these districts who is an asset and who is not. Laziness and ineptitude should not be tolerated. Not when they are getting paid top dollar to teach. That's garbage.

I really think you overestimate the system as a whole.

I could have written the post you quoted. I reached out to my principal and he told me that they are not expecting any more from the teachers than I was getting. So where exactly do we go from there? The ineptitude is not only being tolerated, but even endorsed by the higher ups.

And make no mistake that the unions are on the front lines pushing for the bar to be lowered. So for the ones who suggested that maybe the unions might get involved if there is no in-person teaching next year. Don't kid yourselves. They won't. And not only that, they'll fight tooth and nail to make sure the teachers don't have to give a drop more than the garbage they gave us this year.

Re: What are your plans if school doesn't open in the fall?

To the teachers on here who are doing live instruction and google meets - you are everything I always thought a teacher should be. I wish there was a way to give you the salaries of the teachers who didn't lift a finger more than absolutely, contractually required of them.

I was a huge supporter of teachers. I had no problem with their salaries or summers off. I didn't think the salary was even high enough to ever entice me to take on the stress and hard work.

But this has been eye opening. My view of the whole system has changed.

My kids' teachers were incredible this year and rose to the occasion with grace, compassion, hard work, and aplomb

We will need teachers next year to remotely teach those kids who will not/cannot be sent back in person. There are more of those kids than most people think.

Plus, many teachers have health conditions or considerations that may warrant accommodation under the law. So there will be at least some online teaching going on.

I'm not who you are asking, but I think over $100k is top dollar....I'm friends with a bunch of teachers in NYC and LI all making well over $100k. Good thing I don't run the world, because I would max teachers at $50k.

Re: What are your plans if school doesn't open in the fall?

https://dailyvoice.com/new-york/nassau/schools/covid-19-ny-finalizing-options-for-what-schools-will-look-like-in-fall/789456/

New York is determining how to move forward with education practices amid the novel coronavirus crisis.

When schools potentially reopen their doors for classes in New York come the fall, they could have a very different look for students and staff.

The New York State Education Department and Board of Regents has tabbed a “school reopening task force” comprised of educators statewide as New York recovers from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that forced the state to transition to a “distance learning” model.

That task force held its first meeting this week, on Monday, June 15, as they look to determine what the “new normal” will look like as the state comes out the other side of the pandemic.

According to reports, state officials envision a hybrid model, which could potentially include in-person learning, as well as remote education options. When classes resume, face coverings will be required, and social distancing protocols will be enforced.

According to a survey from the Chronicle of Higher Education, 73 percent of those polled are planning for in-person instruction this fall. Fifteen percent are waiting to decide what to do, while 5 percent are considering a range of scenarios or proposing a hybrid model.

States in the Northeast have been working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a plan for a hybrid approach for K-12 students.

Three more task force meetings have been scheduled over the course of the next week, all virtually due to COVID-19. Those meetings are expected to help stakeholders establish guidelines for what education and classrooms may look like if schools open up for students in the fall.

"In your planning for return to school,"  said Natalie Walrond, the director of the Center to Improve Social and Emotional Learning and School Safety, "return to the norms and the rituals that are safe and welcoming in collaboration with your students and families reflect on your school's climate think about what's felt special, what's felt core to your school's identity and engenders a sense of belonging that you want to keep."

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered that schools in the state close effective Wednesday, March 18 and waived the 180-day requirement for the number of mandatory school days. Colleges in the state were directed to move to distance learning effective Thursday, March 19.

“There is no decision on the fall yet, because the fall is a long, long time away,” he said. “Schools should start preparing now, though, because this is going to be a real exercise.

“How does a school socially distance? How many more rooms would you need to do this? How many more buses do you need to socially distance on a bus,” he continued. “What about cafeterias or a dorm room? So they should start working on that now."

Max out at $50K - teaching requires a masters degree - who could afford to teach then? You’d be starting at like what 20-25K in the beginning.

I teach Upstate in the Capital District. I’ve been teaching for 15 years and will be making just below $70K next year.

What are your plans if school doesn't open in the fall?

As a teacher, I think public school teachers in NYC, Westchester, & LI do get paid very well. It is definitely deserved, but let's not pretend that teachers are underpaid in downstate NY.
Yes, it is true that teachers do not get paid for July & August, the paychecks are spread out. But over 100k for ten months of work is definitely not being underpaid.
And before anyone bites my head off, yes I know full well how hard teachers work. I am a teacher, and my 3rd grader & 1st grader had phenomenal teachers who put their all into distance learning.

How many times can we discuss this?

We haven’t discussed this exactly in one thread. It has been brought up here and there but I was curious.

I spoke to the kids principal today and although she said they are exploring options, I left the conversation feeling that reopening is a less likely option.

I also think this is a topic we all think sucks - regardless as to how we feel about opening.

Do you get the sense that the teachers don't really want to reopen? I think they are enjoying this time off. In my district, they got a RAISE and did so very and disappointingly little. I would give them a D-. They were completely awful. Chat Icon

I've been thinking about this all day. It is MIND BOGGLING to me that ANYONE could even THINK teachers don't want to reopen (other than for fear of their health). I've been teaching for over 20 years. You can ask my DH about my epic meltdown when I realized we wouldn't be going back this year, and I couldn't finish the year with "my" kids. Reading this made my blood boil. I don't know who "the teachers" are that you're referring to, but maybe refer to the ones you know and not the blanket "they" since you CERTAINLY don't speak for me. I never stopped working, and I never stopped missing them. I still do.

I'm not even a teacher and I can't imagine not wanting to go back to work. I'd give my right arm to just be allowed to go back in to my office. Even for a few days a week.
I'm sure most people want to return to work/normalcy/ their lives. People are not designed or meant to stay isolated in their homes long term. Most people crave human interaction outside their homes

Seriously. I've seen lists of what teachers make on LI and unless you're very new, it's well over $100k. I know LI is expensive but that's really a pretty good salary! Especially having the summer off to supplement said income, should you choose to do so. How many people have that option?

Don't get me wrong, I adore good teachers. I know it's a very tough job.

The average teacher’s salary in my Suffolk County district is double what my salary is. And I have a degree and multiple certifications in my field.

I think (for the most part) they earn every penny of it, but I also think it’s a very fair living wage.

This is untrue.

The salaries are public information so people can see for themselves.

Every district is a little different, but you need many years in with credits beyond your MA to be into six figures.

I am in the city now but in 2008 when I switched to teaching from the private sector I started at 53k with a MA in a Western Suffolk District.

I don't recall the salary schedule anymore but I would not be at 100k now and I'm definitely not a "very new" teacher.

Having said that, I am not at all happy with the instruction my son received these past three months and if September looks like that I'll be saying something.

However, I always speak up when people make these blanket generalizations about how most teachers make six figures.

It's not true.

"Top dollar"?!?!?!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
I am sorry... that is insulting. I have to tutor on the side AND work all summer long to make ends meet. Top dollar means what to you? I live on Long Island.... I would need to make DOUBLE my salary to NOT live "check to check".

Are you a new teacher? Most I know make close to or over 100k. Sorry if I made that much I wouldn’t need another job to make ends meet.

Seriously. I've seen lists of what teachers make on LI and unless you're very new, it's well over $100k.

What site are you going on to see salaries?

It’s on www.seethroughny.net

I can go back on Monday - but only on Mondays and Tuesdays and i have to be there at 8:15. The next person in my team arrives at 10:15. While I thought I would go back, it’s a lot of effort and no interaction so I’m staying home and doing everything simultaneously (except school thank god!)

I dropped the ball in gym for one son - I didn’t complete enough logs so he got an N/A. The other one who had the same amount of logs got a grade but had a different teacher.

Most I know make around that also. Teachers are very well paid in Suffolk County (not sure about other counties). Especially compared to teachers in just about every other region in this Country. I grew up in Michigan, we had excellent teachers and schools, very low property taxes. Teachers make probably 40k there now. Teachers go to work 183 days a year, have school vacations off with their kids, have the Summer off. So, the "woe is me" thing with teachers is annoying. Tell me another job with those perks? My friends even know how great of a gig they have. And before anyone says it, I didn't say they don't deserve what they earn. They do, 100%. But let's not pretend they are overworked and underpaid like a daycare or preschool teacher who makes minimum wage.

No, I am not a "new teacher". I am in my 12th year. I make well under 100K working for the DOE. I am also a single mom of 3 kids. I tutor, babysit, AND work over the summer so that I can "fill in the gaps". Normally I SQUEEZE by paycheck to paycheck. I own my house, have a mortgage, drive an 8 year old car, and live WELL within my "means".

And I am not even going to reply to the "perks" you claim we have. Until you have spent one entire school year as a teacher, you can look from the outside and be as upset as you want over my summers "off" (yeah right)... we ARE "overworked and underpaid". But I learned a LONG time ago not to argue with people who enjoy demonizing teachers especially when you have ZERO clue what goes on beyond your own childs classroom (and no, having a friend who is a teacher does not qualify you to decide what my job entails).

Dh has been teaching over 15 years in a suffolk county district and doesn't make 100k either. I certainly think he deserves to though.

I think a lot more teachers get paid $40-80k than over $100k plus. you have to be working many years, be tenured and have more than masters credits. Lots of teachers are busting their butts just trying to get permanent jobs. It's not a top dollar job. we also have to pay for most of our supplies...

YES... thank you... Those making over 100K have put in 15+++++ years, have masters degrees PLUS 30-60 extra credits. Also, tenure is VERY difficult to get these days. It is no longer a "given". It is now 4 years and is is super intense.

Also, we pay out of our own pockets for supplies for the classroom etc etc etc.

Furthermore, NO TEACHER GETS PAID OVER THE SUMMER. We are 10 month employees who get paid for our 10 months of work. Some of us have the option to spread out our checks so that we maintain an income during our "summers off".

This argument will be beaten to death a million times over... the truth is, until you have walked a mile in teachers shoes, done our jobs, dealt with admins and parents and the state and our daily in and out, you are in zero position to judge our salaries. If it bugs you so much, go back to school and become a teacher. Chat Icon

Teachers have more support on this board than they reealize. specially after so any of us had a front row seat to the learning tehse last few weeks. The teachers I know and that my kids had pivoted on a dime and worked even harder to create meaningful learning, growth, and memories. Teachers are educated professionals who could be doing lots more easy and lucrative things and CHOOSE to teach. Even on the high salary end, which comes after many years and advanced coursework, it's not nearly enough.

Reading these boards you would have thought school budgets were going to fail this year and yet all the results I've seen passed by huge margins. I definitely think sometimes it seems there's a consensus when it's really just a few outspoken people.

Re: What are your plans if school doesn't open in the fall?

I just have to say the teachers on here and the teachers I know in real life are def 2 separate animals

All teachers I know in real life work hard for their students all school year but also know their perks are friggin fantastic. Which was one reason they became a teacher to begin with. Having children w a teachers schedule is aces and they know it.
Why is it a bad thing to acknowledge that a specific job has perks and own that? I worked as a Freelance graphic designer for the past 12 years. It can be very tough. But working for myself was amazing. I made my Own hours, set my own prices and would take lunch on the beach because I could. I didn’t only dwell on the nights I’d stay up creating new logos or full marketing designs for clients which was grueling.

Teachers are very important to the growTh and enrichment of our youth and nobody can take that away from Them. Especially the good/exceptional teachers. But come on... you have to admit, it’s got its perks. Just like other jobs do
