Weird ? re gifts at Gavin's 1st Bday
I have been to 3 or 4 1st Birthday Parties and at every party I have been to the child who is turning 1 doesn't open the gifts when the guests are there.
Should I try to get Gavin to open gifts when the guests are there?
What is the norm?

It's way to chaotic to open gifts at that age! Most of the kids won't want to sit and watch. I did it later with ds and grandma-so we could take our time and write everything down!

Most kids don't want to be bothered with opening gifts at that age, but if your son want's to rip into the paper, I say let him. The party's for him afterall. But if he's not really into it or doesn't even notice it, just let them be and open them up later.

We had a small party so there weren't too many gifts to open. Also my ILs desperately wanted to see what she got and I didn't want everyone coming back to my apt so we opened them in the restaurant. Kaydyn didn't really care either way, but everybody else got to see them.

I wouldn't.
It's wayyy too crazy, and they don't really understand opening gifts at that point anyway.

We did, but it was mostly just immediate family - about 15 people, so he didn't have a ton of gifts to open. He was also completely uninterested in eating cake, so I needed photos of something.

We just had Rylans party and opened the presents at home. He has no interest in opening them and I wanted to be able to write everything down.

We opened them at home after the party, there's no way she would have sat there to open presents, it would have been me opening her gifts

Noooooooooo....
If you are inviting any other child there & open gifts, you need to be prepared for them freaking out over sharing his gifts.
If someone wants to give him a special gift, do it before or after everyone is there.

I haven't seen anyone open gifts at a 1st birthday party. We're going to help DS open his gifts after the guests have gone home.
