Wedding Related...Sorry...Are these things tacky??

Shower games, a wishing well, the big wicker chair???

I don't think so...I had them at my wedding, they are traditional IMO

I am in my FSIL wedding and these girls planning this shower are so obnoxious. They preface questions about the shower with now I know XYZ (my FSIL) doesn't want a wishing well...we all know how tacky those are and no one really has those anymore! This from girls who aren't even engaged! It just really pisses me off to no end! They have said the same thing about the chair and shower games.

I swear I want to tell them off!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Wedding Related...Sorry...Are these things tacky??

I had shower games, a wishing well...no wicker chair- but that's okay...

Personally, showers are not all that exciting for guests, games make it a little more fun... I went to a shower where the bride didn't want any games at all, and I sat there barely talking since I didn't know too many people and I was bored-Games are fun...to a point- you don't want to go game crazy, but a little something is good!

wishing well- all the showers I have been to had one, so I don't know... some they had "versions" of a wishing well- they were themed/ wine and honeymoon

wicker chairs- why not?
I haven't seen them at recent showers, but I wouldn't think it was tacky if they did!

ALSO- What do you/ BMs think the BRIDE would want? If she would like those things... then she should have them...has your FSIL really said she didn't want those things or are the BMS just being Chat Icon

i like the shower games be/c they make it more interactive than just watching someone open gifts. the games are cheesey but fun. i like cheesey things Chat Icon

my best friends MIL wanted to hang an Umbrella from the ceiling over her head while she opened her gifts. i put my foot down on that one! Chat Icon

i dont really see the need for the wicker chair... and the wishing well isn't necessary, but it adds a little something.

the point is though- who really cares Chat Icon its her shower... you already had yours the way you wanted it, and... if she hates everything, you can just blame it on them Chat Icon

I just feel the e-mails are rude and it's not necessary to knock what I had at my shower....If she didn't like it fine but I did

Re: Wedding Related...Sorry...Are these things tacky??

i guess it depends on what type of person your FSIL is. i'm not into all the games and stuff so we didnt have them at my shower, nor did i do the big wicker chair. however, we had the wishing well and the bow hat but that was the extent of it. mine was more of a "ladies at lunch" kind of thing, very tea party-esque.

do you think your FSIL would like it? if so, then screw the other girls...its her shower, give her what she would want.

I will do whatever she wants...but these girls are just plain rude! And I am sick of it. I just don't understand why everything must start with well we know how tacky this is, no one does this anymore....just say " I know she relly doesn't want this."

I don't think they are tacky.

The games are for the guests -- showers can be a bit boring to just sit there for so long. The games keep people engaged.

The wishing well is harmless and another way to help the bride & groom set up their home with little things.

Wicker chairs are a preference -- they are not particularly comfortable which is why I dont like them. But they are not tacky.

I had that at mine! Chat Icon

I didn't think it was cheesy, I thought it was old school. My mom & autns did most of the plannig & I don't thnk they had realy been to a shower since their own ones in the 70s, and that's what they knew. I thought it was cute that they wanted to recrea that for me.

I also had a rented wishing well, but no wicker chair. It was a regular chair draped in tulle. And no ribbon hat.

I didn't have shower games, I think they thought I'd think that was lame, but it really does break things up.

But if these girls know you had these things at your shower, they should be more tactful & just say that they don't think it's the bride's style.

Re: Wedding Related...Sorry...Are these things tacky??

I don't think they are "tacky".

I'm not a fan of games myself-- meaning, at my own Shower I asked for no games-- The only thing I liked was when they ask Vinny ?s before about him and have me answer them to see if I get them right...

But other than that I asked for none- not b/c I thought they were tacky- just wasn't my style. When I go to other Showers I still have fun playing games.

And as for the other things- especially a wishing well... it's all about trying to give the Bride as much stuff as possible b/c she will NEED all of those things... ESPECIALLY wishing well items.

I have gotten that before too- girls that are not engaged and never have been giving the Chat Icon type of attitude to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that's the "norm" when it comes to weddings...

Vin's cousin's girlfriend for example- SUPER bitter that she is not engaged and when I mentioned that I was having centerpieces (pretty normal at weddings) she scoffs "HA! Centerpieces--like what?" and I'm like "well, it's a candlebra with roses and other flowers" (you know, the high ones that SO many people have) and she scoffs again "Don't you think that's a little OVER DONE??" ...

I wanted to KILL her Chat Icon

But then I realized that she is bitter, jealous and obnoxious-- and when it is HER time you watch how fast the centerpieces get ordered! LOL she said the same thing about us having a Mass and other things we are doing... I was like "well, you are not engaged so it doesn't matter" Chat Icon Chat Icon

Some people love to be negative Chat Icon

I would say this the next time these girls pull this-- politely but firmly say: "why does everything have to be so negative all the time" or "why do you always have to put everything down in a negative way?"

Some people just try do the OPPOSITE of what most people do and call it UNIQUE Chat Icon

The wicker chair & games were just not my thing. I made this known to my mom & bridal party, so they weren't an issue.

The wishing well is awesome, though, IMO. It's like yiour Christmas stocking. All the stuff you didn't ask for, but someone knew you'd use anyway.

I don't like the big wicker chairs, so my mom knew to ask the restaurant not to put it out for me. As far as the games, some people like them, some don't.

It doesn't matter if the BP likes the wishing well or not, people are going to bring stuff regardless. We just had my FSIL's shower and her sisters didn't put "wishing well" on the invite and a lot of people still brought something for a wishing well.

You should be happy you at least know what's going on. I am the only one in my FSIL's BP not from the bride's side. For my her shower last month I knew when and where, and the day before I was told what the favors would be. I was specifically told by the MOH not to get a gift, the shower was our gift, and then all the other girls gave expensive gifts, and I found out that they all were emailing and planning stuff without including me. I'm still pizzed about that one. Chat Icon

I had a wishing well & shower games but no wicker chair (shower was at my mom's). They did decorate my mom's dining room chair for me & hung up the umbrella I made for my sil's!

Has your SIL ever mentioned that she "didn't" want these things to you?

Re: Wedding Related...Sorry...Are these things tacky??

some of those items are "ethnic" (for lack of a better word).

i had games, which broke the ice between the two "sides". i didn't have the chair because it was at a restaurant that wouldn't allow it.

here is where the "ethnic" part comes in. i'm latina, and i had never heard of a wishing well until i started to attend "non-latino" showers. so on that one, i can not comment on how tacky-non tacky that is. although, as a guest, i find nothing wrong with them.

my $.02: push for them to be part of the shower. best of luck

Re: Wedding Related...Sorry...Are these things tacky??

I didn't have the big wicker chair but I did have shower games and a wishing well. They used a hamper as the wishing well, which was good and the shower games were a lot of fun. They took a little extra effort on the planners part (thanks Barb [nrthshgrl]) but they ended up being a really great time. She asked DH (then FH) questions wrote down the answers and then they asked me the same questions at my shower. I had to get them right, which was fun. I cant remember if I got it wrong or right if the person won a prize or not?
