do we ask the sellers at closing?

The engineer should have checked it out when the house was inspected. Ours told us that they usually go about 20 years before needing pumping. But they do a dye test while they are checking other stuff out to see if it's okay or close to backing up.

i don't know about 20 years, at my parents house, we used to have our pumped every other year!
