Wanted to share a fun and easy Halloween craft you can do with or without kids!

I saw this idea on a magazine cover at the supermarket (forgot which one) and in various blogs so I wanted to try it with DS. He's 2 and did pretty good with a little help.

Very easy to do and you may have everything on hand. You can google jack o' Lantern jars and find some tutorials. When I find the site I used, I'll post the link.

ETA: Here's the link to the blog tutorial. It's at the end of the page.

Jack o' Lantern candle jars...

Decoupage orange tissue paper strips to recycled glass jars using mod-podge (I used white glue mixed with water). I let him paint the glue on. Then I held the jar while he stuck the tissue on. the method I did had the tissue go around to the bottom so you kind of could not put the jar down. So we worked together.
External Image

Let them dry. You can add faces when a little damp but I let them dry overnight to wait for DS' naps.
External Image

Cut faces (or design of your choice) out of black construction paper. I held DS' hands to cut his face shapes. We practiced using scissors and talked about shapes. Then he tried on his own and found ripping the paper to be easier!
External Image

Add some mod-podge for the face.
External Image

Attach your face pieces. I let DS do his own.
External Image

Coat with mod-podge. I did this part as the pieces can slide if you paint too rough. Coat the whole jar too. And let dry.
External Image

Let DS have some creative freedom while I worked on others.

The finished product!

Plus some others that Mommy did while DS was napping!

Add votives in glass holders or tealights or battery tealights. I actually did not have holders or tealights so I put in votives in foil cupcake liners and that worked fine! But I'm going to pick up tealights so I can just light them each night and let them burn out.

You can even use them to hold candy instead.

This one I did torn pieces of tissue instead of strips for a different look. Thought it would have been easier for DS to do but it's actually more work and glueing!
External Image

It was a very fun and simple project! I'm actually getting together with my neighbors and kids to make more! Gonna use baby food jars with tealights.

You can do white tissue to make a ghost or green for Frankenstein or a witch. I've seen the word BOO too instead of a face.

Give it a try! Enjoy!Chat Icon

Thanks!

I just realized that you can see the ridges from the cupcake liners! Chat Icon If you put glass holders or tealights in them, I bet they'd glow more!

I cannot add the link to OP from my iPad.

Here's the blog with the tutorial.. It's at the end.

I did not give DS as much creative freedom but will the next time we do some.

I saw this in Family Fun or Parenting and bought the jars to try them. We were going to do painter's tape though (then peel off after paint dries)...but I might try this instead! So cute!

Oops I see you did it with tissue paper...this one was with paint. The tissue seems less messy so we might go that route too!

I did something very similar with DD!

I wanted to do this at my friends Halloween party, there will be 15 kids, but the glass jars at Michaels are expensive. Where did you get yours? The baby food jars are a good idea too.

From my wrap can! Don't buy glass jars silly! Aren't you aware of our environmental crisis?! Chat Icon Chat Icon The random shapes and sizes are what make them unique and fun. Ask your friends and family to save them for you if you want a lot for a party.

I'm a chronic jar saver so I always have glass jars. The really big one is from Cosco size pickles from the summer! Others are also pickles, sauerkraut, bean salad, salsa, etc. I tend to buy products based on the shape and uniqueness of the jar. Chat Icon I use them to store things.

One I had with a pic of DS inside then filled with my hair ties in my bathroom cabinet. And now I miss it so I have to scour the supermarket for that same jar!Chat Icon

Another one I had in my cabinet to store DS' baby cereal (I did not like how the box stayed open). He's 2 now so I figured I did not need rice cereal anymore! Chat Icon

Walmart sells them by the case near housewares in various sizes. I think Big Lots might have them too

This is great! Thanks for sharing. I decided to do this at our Halloween Party instead of decorating real pumpkins (much cheaper because I have enough jars). I will do the tissue paper ahead of time and the kids can make the faces! Thanks so much for the idea Chat Icon

Do you know how many glass jars I recycled after dumping spoiled food from the hurricane? I should've saved some for this! Man......

I bought glass jars today from JoAnn's. They have a ridged top and are pretty big. They were .99 cents each.
