***UPDATED*** PLEASE HELP..ANY MOMMIES WHO ARE ON-LINE RIGHT NOW--14 MOS OLD Daughter---and FIRST FEVER and ITS HIGH, ADVISE NEEDED IMMEDIATELY!

UPDATE:

First off, thank you from the bottom of my heart to ALL those who replied to me. You ladies are truly SPECIAL!

To back up a bit, I got the call back from the on call doctor after ONE HOUR of waiting and he said to get my DD to the emergency room. He said with a cough and a fever, in this day and age (with flu, etc) you can't take ANY chances. He said he wanted her started on Tamaflu, given a chest x-ray, etc.

I ask him about PM Pediatrics and he said he has no knowledge of it so its hard for him to say. He said to go to St. Charles (I live in Suffolk) or Stony Brook. We chose Stony Brook BECAUSE they have Pediatric Emergency. When we got there my DD temp was up to 103.5. I was DYING!

To make a long story short! Her chest was fine so they didnt feel an x-ray was necessary. Believe it or not, she was in good spirits through this all. They prescribd Tamaflu for 5 days and of course Tylenol and/or Motrin. We were in and out in about 2-2/12 hours which was better then we anticipated. We found a 24-hour pharmacy who HAD Tamaflu in stock and I just woke my DD up a little bit ago to give her the first dose.

She is impossible taking medicine. Her fever is slight so far this AM so of course I'll be monitoring it all day. He said she must stay home this week so now the stress is on figuring out who's watching her, etc.

Thanks again ladies, you have a WEALTH on information as always.

PS. If your child spits out some of the medicine as my daughter did with the Tamaflu before, what do you do? She got a lot of it but definitely not all of it so that makes me nervous.

PSS. For anyone who has tried the new PM Pediatrics in Selden, please let me know the details about what its like, your experience AND if you TRULY think its as good as going to an Emergency Room.

Thanks Again,
Keri

Hi,

If anyone can give me advise. My DD started getting a cough on Thursday. She was seen just this AM at the Ped office and she had no fever, and we were told its a cough and use the Nebulizer. She started burning up at 4:00 with a 102.8 fever. I am dying. I immediately gave her Tylenol and so far its down to just under 102. I called my DR's emergency line and I have been waiting for 35 minutes for the on call DR to call back (is this normal to take so long..I mean COME ON NOW)?

Would you take your child with a 102.8 fever to a hospital/emergency on call place or with that fever ASSUME Tylenol will work and wait until tomorrow to see if the fever is still that high? I'm a first time mom and don't know what to do...PLEASE ADVISE!

PS. I was told that on Nov 12th...9 days ago someone at my daughter's Daycare tested poistive for H1N1..but not from her room!

Thank youChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly, I would go to PM pediatrics. There is one in Plainview and on in Patchouge (I think) - not sure look it up. Good luck!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Second, don't worry. That is not even actually that high. My DS rarely gets sick but the few times he has is fever has gone to almost 104. The first time he was about your DC's age. The ped just told me to give tylenol - if that doesn't bring it down than to use motrin. Motrin is stronger but, the one time we used it - it irritated my DS's stomach.

The Ped. told me that it doesn't matter how high the fever is but, how your DC is acting. At 103 and almost 104 my DS was still acting ok. If your DC's fever gets high and she is acting out of it and very lethargic then it is more cause for worry.

HTH! Don't worry 102 isn't actually that high !

I would call the after hours number again. Chat Icon I myself wouldn't take DD to the ER for a fever of 102. How is she acting?

i know youre worried cause its your first time through this, but 102.8 isnt TOO bad..i would be alil aggravated at the time its taking to call back., but i wouldnt bring her to an ER where there are WAY more risks with the viruses and things people are bringing in there..wait out the tylenol, and piggy back it with motrin (do you know how to do that?) only if the fever is still over 102..at nite, they tend to get warmer, i would just keep her hydrated..and wait to go back to the ped.

In my experience Motrin works much better for high fevers than tylenol.

as others have said 102 is not that bad, yes its a high fever, but I wouldn't be too worried. Try the motrin and see if that helps.

I would wait it out and see if the Tylenol brings it down. There are so many childhood diseases like roseola that are harmless and cause high fevers. The most important thing with fevers is how they are acting. If she is herself, drinking and wetting diapers I would not worry yet. I would call the Dr. and may take her to PM pediatrics or the ER if she gets lethargic, is not taking fluids and the fever goes higher.

Second, I wouldn't take DD to the hospital with a 102. My DD had a fever a little higher than that once and we just gave her Tylenol and kept an eye on her. The Tylenol got it down within a few hours and she was fine. I would still call the ped just to put your mind at ease about it though. If her fever spikes or it seems like the Tylenol isn't helping at all then I would maybe go to the E.R.

Good luck! Chat Icon

I would probably be thinking to take DD to the hospital as well, but right now with h1n1 everywhere, I would rather wait it out at home, and I would call your peds call service again!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My Ped told me that over 102.3, treat with Tylenol. Under that don't treat. Over 103.5 Treat with Tylenol and Motrin and lukewarm bath. And DS is only 6 months. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I know it must be scary but, I think LO's can run a high fever. Not like adults.

I would wait it out. When DD have 104.3 the ped told us to alternate motrin with tylenol and if at the point the fever didn't go down to take her to the ER. Luckily it went down.

GO to PM pediatrics or the ER. My daughter had a cold that turned into pneumonia within hours, this past July.

102 isn't actually that high of a fever. I would calll your ped. and explain she was exposed to H1N1 and tell him her symptoms. I would probably take her to PM Pediatrics before the ER for 102 fever.

ITA with the other moms. 102 isn't that terrible for a fever. I also agree that Motrin is better for reducing fevers than Tylenol.

As long as she's drinking (appetite usually is gone when there's a temperature) and wetting diapers I wouldn't go to the hospital. My DD would have to have a very high fever (104+) before I exposed her to an emergency room.

I brought my DD to the doctor this afternoon with 103.8 and it turned out just to be a virus that I can't do anything for except give motrin and keep an eye on her. There's something going around (which is never helpful advice, I know).

I would give your ped another call. Hope she feels better soon. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

to be honest i would try the motirn and tylenol first before going to and er or clinic... if your child doesnt have the h1n1 now, god knows what they will be exposed to while waiting in the waiting room....

I agree with alternating motring and tylenol every 4 hours but please dont put her in the tub to lower the fever. It puts them more at risk for febrile seizures b/c of the sudden change in body temperature. If you need to, run a washcloth under lukewarm water and apply it to her forehead and neck. This helps and is safer than the tub.

ITA Dress your DC in light clothing and maybe use a lukewarm cloth on the head but I would not give a bath with a high fever.

No, I would not even consider taking her to the ER with that temp. I'd just do the tylenol and motrin every couple of hours and use a luke warm rag on her head. But that's me, you have to do what you feel you need to.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I would not worry about a 102 fever.

My son has been running a fever over 105 today and I have been treating him at home and speaking to the docs over the phone. He's fine and better off at home.

Your daughter will be exposed to all kinds of stuff in the ER and it will be uncomfortable for you and her and she won't be able to rest well there. She's better off at home.
