UPDATE: I made the laundry detergent today!!

UPDATE: I finally got around to doing this today! It was a little annoying grating the soap but it smells fantastic! My first load of laundry is in the washer now and I will let you all know how it comes out!

My cousin, who is like this cool, modern hill billy from North Carolina, makes her own laundry detergent. For about $33 she makes enough for a year. She swears by her "recipe," and says it gets the clothes really clean and it smells great.

The only problem is that the main ingredient is called Zote Soap and I can't find it anywhere!! I've been to every local grocery store, Target, Walmart, etc.

Has anyone seen this anywhere? It looks like a big bar of soap, is sold in the laundry section, and comes in pink or white.

Yes!! I just saw it at Big Lots the other day! It was like $1.29, and I was intrigued by it. But didn't buy since I couldn't figure out to use it. Do you shave it off to do laundry or stick the whole bar in?

Ohhh I didn't see that she makes the soap! Please share the recipe! I saw it at the Big Lots in Oakdale/Bohemia area on Sunrise Highway. I'm going there again tonight so I'm going to pick it up!

I knew they had it on Amazon, but I've accumulated the other ingredients and didn't want to wait to receive it from Amazon. Thank you, though!

Ok, I am totally curious now. We do so much laundry every week, I wonder how well this recipe works.

If you do it, please post or FM about your results. Thanks!

Supposedly it's fantastic for HE washers because it creates no suds.

I can tell you that my cousin has been using this recipe for quite some time, and loves it.

She said it freaked her out the first few times she used it because it creates no suds in the machine. She didn't think it was going to get the clothes clean, but it does.

Her husband is a big time hunter, and they go bear hunting. He killed and butchered a bear and had blood all over his clothes. She said it came out in one wash.

I think I'm going to make it over the weekend, and I will let you all know how it goes!

I'm excited! I figure we spend about $250-$300 a year on laundry detergent, so this would save a lot of money!

Re: Has anyone seen this strange product anywhere?

I have a mormon friend in UT who makes her own soap. I wouldn't put it in my HE front loader for fear of what it might do, but she does. She loves the stuff! I think she said she gets all the ingredients at her Walmart.

I's actually .90 at Big Lots. I picked up a bar earlier, I'm going to half the recipe since I want to make sure it actually works for us. Stop and Shop has the other bar product she mentions in the blog, it's around $1.79 or so. I couldn't find the Arm & Hammer wash stuff there though. Where did you get that?

Re: Has anyone seen this strange product anywhere?

It seems like everything except pink zote (and the crystals, which I would leave out) can be without any scent..not only do I hate when my clothes smell, but we all have sensitive skin...keep us posted, please!

Re: Has anyone seen this strange product anywhere?

you can totally use Fels-Naptha or any oher castile soap for this recipe!!!

I found a simpler recipe for this on Pinterest last week - the ingredients are

Castille soap (2 cups)
Borax (1 cup)
Super Washing Soda (1 cup).

I made the smallest batch - AND IT REALLY REALLY REALLY WORKS!!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would add the baking soda to keep your whites white. I read they will get dingy without the baking soda. Glad it works!

Also, I read the dollar tree version of oxiclean works just as well (for the recipe posted above), so I'm going to pick that up today. I don't like scented detergent, so I'm not doing the fabric softener!

Re: Has anyone seen this strange product anywhere?

I found that the day after I bought my huge jumbo bottle of Tide. I'm going to try it too.

The one thing I am curious about is can it be used happily on babies clothing?

When I read that the first thing I thought was that if it cleaned up this horrendous bear situation then certainly it should work when I "leak" Chat Icon
