The difference is the visual. The students should not know they are protesting. It has no place in the workplace. Period. Especially a publicly funded workplace.

There are plenty of people who do not recite the pledge for religious reasons and stand silently while it is being recited. Or who sit in mass when Catholics are kneeling.

I teach, and I have spent years covering current events, including this election, and my students have no clue what my personal political beliefs are-at my school were not allowed to discuss politics on a personal level with students.

So, I don't think the protest was right, and I don't think the banner is right either.

I don't think there is any reason to discuss your personal politics with students. Chat Icon

I teach university age students in the American Studies program and we had been discussing this election for 2 years in conversation / writing classes. I never really gave my opinion because I try to do as little talking as possible (they are the ones that need the practice), but I was asked what side I was on and I gave it. However, it's really rare that anyone would support a Republican president here anyway.

Now after the election, I have no problem expressing my feelings on Trump here (in an intelligent way) because that's what the students want. They want to talk about it because it's a serious situation. It also reassures them that not all Americans wanted him.

He's been great for material in my classes. The other day I used some of his language to teach them how to be coherent and not sound like him. We talked about his lack of cohesive devices and fragments, and that that is not the proper way to use English. It was a great lesson.

As long as I don't talk about Scientology (I signed papers saying I have never been involved with that religion), I'm A-OK.

ETA: They are university age, so I think it's a good age for that.

I think there's a big difference between middle/high school and college age kids. Also, I think it's absolutely possible to engage a class in a discussion without revealing your personal beliefs. We've been talking about it for two years also, and have continued post-election, but my students still don't know my personal feelings on Trump.

I understand your point, I still don't think they did anything that was so offensive to warrant disciplinary action though. They apologized, I feel like that is enough given the "offense".

Personal politics does not belong in schools at all. They should be teaching the children facts so when it is time for them, the children can make their own decisions. The person that had a banner was wrong and not standing for the pledge is wrong. It is disrespectful.
