Trump tweets that Nordstrom treated Ivanka so unfairly

https://apnews.com/49fa95b8597f4d81a99db02477d9ae41/President's-tweet-sends-Nordstrom-shares-tumbling

NEW YORK (AP) — Nordstrom shares have taken a tumble after President Donald Trump tweeted that the department store chain had treated his daughter "so unfairly." The company announced last week it would stop selling Ivanka Trump's clothing and accessory line, saying that was based on the sales performance of the first daughter's brand.

The president's tweet said: "My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person — always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!" It was re-tweeted more than 4,000 times in less than 30 minutes.

Shares in Seattle-based Nordstrom traded around $42.70 before the tweet, then fell to $42.48 afterward at around 10:50 a.m.

Trump's tweets have in the past also affected shares in U.S. automakers, Boeing and Carrier.

With a single tweet now, he directly affects stocks, so he can easily manipulate the market to his benefit, or his buddies' benefits whenever he wants.

I hope stock experts are watching him, and can get him or someone close to him indicted on insider trading, or something similar....

He's a POS. The man has no clue how to have any self control. He sounds more like a ridiculous man-child who throws a tantrum when he doesn't get his way. Great pick to run our country!! How do these people not see this?
He thinks everything is the Democrats fault or if someone is against him it's a "paid" protestor. I never got a single cent for protesting the man. He's delusional.

Re: President's tweet sends Nordstrom shares tumbling

I think people need to combat his crap by buying up the stocks of the companies he targets. Especially after they take a dive. If I had two nickels to rub together I'd be spending them on Nordstrom stock right now.

You mean like this?
http://fortune.com/2017/01/05/stocks-trump-tweets/

Professional traders and hedge fund managers apparently have algorithms and models to account for market turbulence from President-elect Donald Trump’s tweets. Now you can too.
An app called Trigger has just launched something it calls “ Trump Trigger, ” which sends users an alert every time Trump tweets about a publicly traded company.
If it sounds like a joke, it isn’t. Trump has taken to the social media platform numerous times since the November election to castigate, and occasionally praise, various companies, often to market-moving effect.
...

People are already trying to either hedge their bets, or make money off of his rantings....

Isn't some of this basically impeachable?

It's probably not technically "insider trading" if he has no idea what he's doing. However, if anyone in his inner circle owns any of these stocks, and buys or sells them related to changes based on his tweets, I'm sure it can be brought to court.

I'm sure he and/or Ivanka own stock in one or more of the stores she sells her stuff in. I'm sure he and his family own stock in lots of companies, so it won't take long to get him on a technicality at least.

I would hardly call a 0.5% drop TUMBLING. Not to mention it's already back up to $43.10. So I don't really think that the tweet mattered.

ITA. I do think Trump needs to stop with the stupid tweets but to say he sent Nordstrom stocks "plummeting" solely based on one tweet is a stretch and oversensationalizing.

They actually changed the title of the article to have the headline:

Trump tweets that Nordstrom treated Ivanka so unfairly

That's what it should have been in the first place.

Someone just asked him about the tweets in the daily press conference. And the respond was that the president has every right to defend his family.

I personally feel that him and his family need to learn that not everyone will like them and now that he is president he can't tweet about every little thing and defend everything.

Grow the F up. You are POTUS start acting more of an adult.

Yes, I also thought it was an interesting point that she has supposedly separated herself from her businesses so what does it matter to them anyway?

I fixed the thread title. I agree that they didn't tumble, but if you own a few million shares, or even a few thousand, a .5% change is a big deal. Day traders buy and sell stocks on smaller changes.

I'm sorry but I have to respectfully disagree - I do not believe most traders would view a 51bp change to be significant. Most stocks have bigger variations throughout the day than 51bps. The average stock moves 80bps per day in either direction.

The bigger point is, when the POTUS tweets, stocks directly change..... that is a huge issue! The exact amount isn't currently the issue.

That's the thing though... you can't pinpoint a price movement of that size solely on one tweet and the size of the movement does matter if it is relatively negligible. The entire equity market can move based on broader macroeconomic factors and a whole host of things so it is impossible to imply there is a direct correlation between a tweet and a stock movement.

ETA: FTR I'm anti-Trump and think ALL of his tweets need to stop because of the broad impact they have. But in this particular case, I think it is being oversensationalized.

Stocks move that much every day, sometimes a lot more than that - I don't think that the tweet made a difference!!!

The tweeting is stupid - don't get me wrong. I just think the AP was sensationalizing it.

But it's not as though he had access to inside information - I mean he said that a company treated his daughter unfairly. Dumb tweet, maybe, but to call it a crime or unethical is ridiculous IMO.

Yes!

The fact that he tweeted this from the official POTUS Twitter is mind blowing.

That being said, I just read that Nordstroms stock is now up several percentage points (I believe just over 4%). Suck on that Donald! I hope more companies follow suit

True. Tied with Sean Spicer and Kellyanne Conway. I'd almost feel sorry for them if they weren't so deplorable.
