transitioning to one nap-what age?

My DS seems to be having trouble with his afternoon nap. He is still sleeping well in the morning, but for the past week or two has been hanging out in his crib for up to an hour without sleeping at his normal time. Some days he ends up falling asleep close to an hour later, and some days we end up getting him after an hour awake. He's 11.5 months. I thought that sounded too early to drop to one, plus don't they normally drop the a.m. nap first? Could he be moving his afternoon nap later?

Re: transitioning to one nap-what age?

DS just turned 11 months old and has been doing the same thing the past few weeks.

He used to nap an hour in the AM and an hour in the PM but lately his morning naps have been 2-2.5 hours and it had been an hour (or two) long struggle to get him down in the PM, only to have him take a short 30 minute catnap (on good days!).

I finally gave up on his PM nap and just put him to bed at 6:30pm instead of 7:30.

I'm so not ready for only one nap a day Chat Icon

I think DS was close to 18 months before he dropped to 1 nap.

i really think it varies by kid... DS is 18.5 mos and still takes 2 naps (totalling 3.5-4 hrs)

I feel like he still needs it-becuase when he does fall asleep, he will nap for at least 1.5 hours. Also takes 1.5 in the morning. I hate to have him lose it AND go to bed earlier since I only get to see him for a few hours after work anyway :(

Re: transitioning to one nap-what age?

i was about to post something like this!!

i am going through the same thing with my boys.. they are 10 months and their AM nap is fine.. they sleep up to 2 hours.
then the PM nap they can be in the crib for over an hour with nothing.. but for the most part i just leave them until they finally fall asleep.. lucky for me though they don't cry when they are in the crib... they will play make noise.. so thats why i leave them.
eventually they give in and fall asleep.. even if its for a half hour.. without that they are terrors until bedtime Chat Icon

Re: transitioning to one nap-what age?

my DS around 18mths around 1 he switched from 11/2 to 11 and 4 for nap times

my DD is 12 mths and if she gets up early she takes 2, otherwise I keep her to 1 so her and DS take nap together.

Re: transitioning to one nap-what age?

DS did this to me a month ago (at 9m) (when he broke 2 more teeth on top), I thought we were back on track this past month. But past two days, he's doing it again.

For some reason the morning nap is so easy. The afternoon one so hard. He gets so tired, I say "sleepy baby, lets go to your room" and he will crawl there, well get ready, I put him in bed, he closes his eyes, I close the door 2 min later, he's squealing and jumping and whining. I've learned not to go in, if I go in, he'll never sleep. It takes him an hour to wind down, then he sleeps for 2 and is totally off schedule.

I blame teething, but then I always do. (we are getting 2 more on the bottom now)

I am so not looking forward to molars!

He's 11m now.

I'm wondering if teething has anything to do with it...he's also giving us some trouble eating. He;s normally a pig!! I al going to keep on trying normal time and see how it goes. argh!

Re: transitioning to one nap-what age?

my 13 month old dd was having some trouble for awhile, but the issue resolved itself when I pushed her nap times back by an hour. she's been taking both just fine ever since and hopefully will for a few months - she's not ready yet to drop one of them.

around 12 months

I am jealous of those parents whose kids are still taking 2 naps at 18 months! Chat Icon
