Traffic between Stony Brook and Ronkonkoma

My husband and I sometimes talk about moving closer to my office. One of the areas we discuss is Stony Brook because I have liked the area ever since I went to SUNY. Today I had a medical appointment at Stony Brook hospital and it took me forever to get back to Ronkonkoma. Is it always like this? We're not seriously looking yet but I want to know if I should rule out Stony Brook. I may move my office in a year or 2 but I would be going to another building in Ronkonkoma.

What roads were you on? What time?

There's alot of traffic on portion road now where they are doing the construction...

Re: Traffic between Stony Brook and Ronkonkoma

it really depends on where in SB and where in Ronkonkoma - I would say even during rush hour it shouldn't be more than 20-25mins. im in setauket and to get to portion only takes this long. I use back roads to get everywhere.

If you let us know which roads, we'll give you alternates.

I LOVE SB. I just got back from walking my dog at the Avalon Park next to the Gristmill - watched the sunset down at the harbor - couldn't imagine a better place to live

If you were up by SUNY today - today was the first day of classes on both the West and HSC sides of SUNY, so it was high traffic/volume. It usually evens out on Nicolls Rd over a week or two.

Nicolls rd is usually dead stop between SCCC and SUNY Stonybrook everyday between 4 and 7. I did hear portion Rd is being expanded like Middle Country Rd so that may save you some time.

Yes, I was. Maybe it slows down after people start skipping class Chat Icon Chat Icon . Just kidding. I went to SUNY and didn't skip classes much at all!

For those who asked, I didn't take Portion Rd. today but I was on Nicholls.

My OB is also in Stony Brook/Setauket and the traffic was not always terrible when I was going there a lot in 2007.

I live right off Nicholls between Ronkonkoma and Stony Brook and it usually isn't bad. It used to be awful before they removed some of the lights.

both my parents did that commute - I never once heard them complain about traffic

I think it took 20-25 minutes

we lived on Lower Sheep- so we were close to 347 and Nicholos

this is where I live too. it is much better now since the lights were removed.
I used to commute to the Ronkonkoma train station every day and there was never really any traffic.
