What happens if you are over your lease and you can't find a car? Are you forced to purchase it?

You can ask for extension for up to 6 months on some companies. After the lease is up, the extension months you have to factor in taxes on the monthly payment.

Ahh very interesting. Thanks. Think we will just have to pound the pavement soon to see what our options will be. Everything always works out so I am not really worrying about it. Just sounds like it will be more of a hassle than years ago.

What happens if you are over your lease and you can't find a car? Are you forced to purchase it?

Pretty much however the cars are going so much over the lease buyout in most cases so you are better off buying the car and selling it. Or keeping it.

Yeah this. You have to check if the value is higher than the buyout (probably yes). Then you have to buy the car out somehow (either cash or finance). Don't return it and pay the mile fees. Go on Carvana and see what their offer is. I heard Carvana can handle the lease buyout paperwork for you and cut you a check for the excess profit (haven't tried it myself yet).

This is not necessarily true. The manufacturer I work for has stopped allowing anyone other than their dealers to purchase their off leases right now for this exact reason. Many others are following suit.

The buyers would still have the option to execute their buy out themselves and then sell to Carvana or whoever they want right afterwards. You can get a same day auto loan with some banks, buy the car and then just pay off the loan right away.
And most states have laws where if you flip the car within a few days you don't even pay the sales tax on the buyout.

These dealers you mention are just preventing the direct transfer from the dealer's financing company to the third party. And even so if you wanted to buy a new car with the same manufacturer you can just take the lease to a bunch of dealers and see which one will give you the most positive equity to apply towards a new car. One will bite.

You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. The dealers don't set these policies, the manufacturers do. It has nothing to do with the dealers financing companies; which by the way, most times are the manufacturers. Yes the consumer always has first right. Always, but if you took a leased Honda civic to carvana, they wouldn't be able to purchase it from HVT Inc. ONLY Honda/Acura dealers can purchase those vehicles. Yes, in theory- a consumer can buy the car and re-sell it, but in NY they must pay the sales tax and transfer the title into their name. You are however, right about the equity. Technically the consumer is not entitled to equity, as the don't own the vehicle, but due to the way the market is most dealers are passing it on to the consumer to offset the high cost of the new cars.

Honestly, being in the business, my advice is to extend your lease and wait it out. Its not worth paying these prices or the aggravation of trying to find what you want. Wait until supply evens out and then jump ship. PM me if you have any questions.

Got really lucky, picked up my new car tonight. Was told Christmas and only took 2 weeks. Got the color I wanted too and just $30 more a month from lease from 3 years ago :)

I found out that my Pottery Barn nursery is delayed and may not make it here before my baby is born. First world problems but still… I ordered that in September. It’s a gift from my in-laws. I hope that everything else is supposed to come, comes.

Hopefully things will start getting better. Not really confident in that but I work in a business too that just keeps pushing up due dates and I don't know what to tell customers anymore.

This. Toyota let me extend my lease twice, I loved my SUV and wasn't sure what I wanted to get next so I delayed it. I ended up keeping my lease for an extra year, the monthly payment went up slightly but nothing crazy.

I was ready to get a new car as it was time for major things like brakes and new tires. I got very lucky that it only took 2 weeks for it to come in. I got exactly the color I wanted too as I had to pick 3 colors in case I couldn't get it.

The whole car thing is crazy. We turned in a lease in Sept and thankfully the dealer was able to locate the color combo needed with a price we were willing to pay. However, it was so incredibly disappointing no loyalty discounts etc on the deal.
Our main family suv is due back in May and I’m already dreading it. Anyone find a good deal on an suv with surround vision (aerial view) and digital rear view mirror? (Turning in a Traverse)

They think this will go on for another year. We put down much more than originally thought so was not happy about that but they are trying anything to get some business. I shouldn’t complain though as I would have had to put money into the car if I kept it and the payments wouldn’t have gone down and maybe would have been more.

So, to update this toy shortage was complete BS

I bought everything early and now I’m on Amazon and target and everything is in stock and cheaper. I fell for it, I’m an idiot!

They went from toys to turkeys and now Christmas trees. It’s all media trying to scare and make people insane and crazy.

Yes, many things are backordered and not available but they know people will listen to almost anything now after this pandemic. It’s quite sad.

Well I couldn’t get an Xmas tree last year and I went about 2 weeks before Xmas, so it’s not like I waited too late.

That’s too late here lol. People have their trees up before Thanksgiving. That’s why I love the fake trees as I can decorate anytime I want to.

I did it with my family just fine growing up when we had real trees.

It's early here as people usually get them a week or so before Xmas.

They were talking about real tree shortages, and I couldn't get one last year. >.<

People used to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate all the way until Christmas Eve. Everything has been pushed up through the years and everyone seems to have to beat everyone out, bigger and better. It is ridiculous IMO as nothing is special anymore.

We still buy our tree 2-3 weeks out. Otherwise it’s dead by Christmas

Same here when we bought one. Don’t get how anyone can keep it alive a month or more.

I think all those people who are now decorating the minute Halloween is over must have fake trees
Otherwise that would be some raging fire Hazzard by Christmas.

I have seen some getting them this weekend but I would think you can’t get them much earlier. Ours was always dead by Christmas Day while taking care of it.

We put up a fake tree but I saw a ton of people out there Friday driving around with the trees on top of the cars...

So early. They look like crap by Christmas as much as you water them.

I read some of the posts not all. I thought the true idea of Christmas was not about gifts. Isn't it about the birth of Christ. Shortage or not, it's a good lesson there is more to this holiday and life than hundreds or thousands of dollars spent on toys. Less is actually more.

Exactly but are you new to all of this? People get worse every year with more decorations and gifts. It’s all a competition unfortunately.
