Toe-walking?

DD isn't walking yet- but she cruises and can walk using a push toy. I've noticed she tends to walk on her tip-toes. At times she'll stand momentarily- and she's flat-flooted when she does that. Most of her steps though are on her toes.

Anyone else have this? Should I put her in shoes to discourage it?

Re: Toe-walking?

My dd is just starting to walk with toys and yes she walks on her tippie toes. All of my nephews and my neice did the same. It may just be their way of learning to walk or you may not have noticed that someone in the family walks that way. I know my bil walks on his tippy toes... unnoticable unless your looking for specifically.

Re: Toe-walking?

Does she go in a walker? My cousin use to walk that way pushing his toys because he was in his walker a lot! Thats why I never liked them.

Actually, when barefoot- I walk on my toesChat Icon I didn't think that when learning to walk- she might prefer the same thing. So she may have inherited it?

Re: Toe-walking?

Toe walking is common is children under three. After that, kids should be evaluated to see if there is an underlying issue, such as short tendon in the achilles heel or another issue.

My goddaughter is 10 years old and is wearing orthopedic shoes to help correct the condition. My friends daughter is 3-1/2 years old and is currently getting therapy to correct it. The younger they are, the easier it is to correct.

This is true.

A friend who is a PT saw my DD toe walking and first asked if my DH or I were toe walkers. I tend to if I'm walking around the house in bare feet and hardwood floors but not on other surfaces... I never knew until DH pointed it out to me.

Right now we are chalking it up to a hereditary straight but the PP is correct. Keep an eye on it. It can go either way. Some cases it does interfere with development and can be a problem later on.

Exactly what I was going to say. It's also a sign of autism but only ALONG WITH other symptoms.

But, kids actually do this because of how they are positioned in utero. It is nature to walk on the balls of their feet. I read a whole article about it, which I will try to find.

Yeah I know the link with autism. Thankfully- there are absolutely no signs of communication or social deficits so it's not a concern.

I'd love to read that article if you happen to find it!Chat Icon

Re: Toe-walking?

My 21 month old still does some toe walking. We see an orthoepedist b/c she was born with clubbed feet & he said it is common in beginning walkers.

Re: Toe-walking?

Toe walking is a red flag for an array of things, but I have read it's fairly common when they first start walking. DD never toe walked. DS still does to this day.

Re: Toe-walking?

DD is almost 2, has been walking for a year, and often still walks on her toes. usually only without shoes. i did the same thing when i was little. i'm not concerned.

it's best for babies to learn to walk barefoot.

Re: Toe-walking?

It's quite normal for children up to 3 years to walk on toes, the reason why they do it is bc their achilles tendon are too short and it takes time to stretch .

Here is one of them. I know there is another explaining the utero thing. I'll look for that one now.
