Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

Well I almost always bring my lunch to work which saves me at leat $10-15 a day which adds upto anywhere from $200-300 a month.

I just make a little extra for dinner & pack it up the night before.

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

Try doing errands in one shot to save on gas

Look at your cable bill, take out packages you dont need, same with cell phone

For savings- start small and build up- it DOES make a difference w/ compounding interest- even if you say move only $25 a week into your savings account it does add up! That's how we started..
$25 is basically the cost of some extra purchases like magazines and coffees and you won't even feel it- start there, and then build it up to $30/week.

Edited to say- I think with savings, people fall into the, what's $25 going to do- what difference will it make.. and you know what- every little bit helps! I think if you start the habit you get "into it"...

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

I save all of my change in a big UTZ pretzel bin and we cash it in about 2-3 times a year when we want some extra cash for something. We'll usually cash in about $200 at a time.

The pathmark on Jericho triples the coupons. On breaks I run up there with a few coupons that we trade off at work and get a ton of free items.

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

I gave up my daily Dunkin' Donuts habit and daily bottled water. I'm sure I've already saved at least $100.

We also seldom eat out anymore; when we do, we skip drinks and usually appetizers.

I bring lunch, but that's always been the case because options near my workplace are limited.

I trip-chain and use my cruise control while commuting to save gas.

We're also getting rid of HBO, etc. because we seldom watch those channels. We also got rid of Netflix because we didn't take full advantage of it.

I haunt used bookstores too.

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

oh- go to the library- it's free- and has videos too!
I go to mine b/c after a few moves of lugging boxes filled w/ books I was done.. sick and tired of trying to give away books that cost me $8, $10 and $20!!!!
ridiculous!
you can even request books online & they will call you at the library when they're ready to pick up!

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

1. Coupons
2. Save change (it adds up quickly)
3. Errands in one shot (I try my best)
4. Return soda cans/bottles, hand the receipts to the cashier with your other coupons and they take that off your total as well.
5. Stop and Shop takes .5 cents every canvas bag you use..They take it off your total...I always bring 4 or 5 bags with me.
6. We'll hit up Subway for lunch and split a $5 foot long
On occasion

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

1 - DH returns all bottle & cans for deposits

2 - save all change & deposit into savings

3 - We have 2 holiday clubs set up....one in each of our names, each depositing $30 a week.

4 - Any refund/rebate/gift/extra (found) $ goes into savings. - such as STAR Rebate

5 - We both also take lunch almost every day - maybe buying lunch once a week the most.

6. Coupons when I can (DH usually stops at the store on his way home)

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

Great idea.

- I almost always take lunch to work.

- I tend to move money into my savings when I first get paid - so I budget according to what's left after I've saved money instead of saving what's leftover at the end of the month.

- I don't charge things I know I won't be able to pay off the next month.

Re: TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY THREAD!!!

Great idea- especially now..

- I cut my electric bill by 30% by doing bigger loads of laundry (less frequently) and running my dishwasher only when it is completely full.

-We also saved money and budgeted better for medical expenses by doing an FSA. We put aside money from my check for these expenses that can add up: Prescriptions, co-pays, etc.

- Going out to eat less. We saved a lot of $$ by doing this.
