Share Your Money Savings Tips

So I have been thinking about ways to cut my spending....

I just cut $50 a month off our cell phone bills by switching from 2 plans to a family share plan- we get more minutes and features for less money-

I am dumb struck that I didn't think of this sooner

I would love to hear things that other people are doing to save money!

Honestly, Peapod/Fresh Direct really helps me stick to my list.

Eat in. If we order take out, we bring it home so that saves delivery and tips.

Really try to buy only what we need.

Increase all your insurance deductables to the max allowed. Especially homeowners.

Re: Share Your Money Savings Tips

Forced savings.

We figured out how much money we should have left over each month after bills, expenses ... and are now transferring a large chunk of it to our Money Market each month. If the money isn't easily accessible we're less likely to spend it.

Writing down every penny we spend.

It helps us to be accountable for frivolous and impulse purchases.

And like I said, in the other thread WALMART!!

Re: Share Your Money Savings Tips

Shop around for car/house insurance to get the best possible rates

If you owe any money at the end of the year in taxes, shield money now in your 401ks - give the $ to yourselves instead of the government

Install ceiling fans in the bedrooms. We rarely use the a/c because the rooms are kept cool with the ceiling fans

Walk! I walk to the train now instead of driving. It's a 20 minute walk, good exercise and no gas!

We joined a farm co-op - $600 for the year for fresh organic fruits/veggies every week. By comparison, it's a LOT cheaper than buying produce at the supermarket

Get rid of your landline - most people carry their cell phones everywhere, there's really no point to having a landline. We have the most basic plan just in case of emergency for when the babysitter is watching our DD.

I recently lowered my cell phone plan down by 20 dollars, by lowering minutes that I didnt end up using.

Always shop with coupons and by weekly sales when grocery shopping. Load up on things at CVS when its BOGO or when you get extra bucks. Between coupons ansd extra bucks I get so many items for under ten dollars majority of the time.

Give myself mani and pedi, and only splurge when I need a "me" day.

bring breakfast and lunch from home with me everyday.

Re: Share Your Money Savings Tips

these tips are great!

We switched to family cell phone plan also and got more mintues for less money/month. We also traded in DH's truck (an Explorer) for a smaller car (Nissan Sentra) a few yrs. ago and we're glad we did this!

I am dying to try the Peapod thing, so maybe I will...it really saves, huh?

Other things:
We eat out much less than we used to.
I have started doing my own pedi/mani at home and treat myself every so often (more in the summer). Chat Icon
I shop Walmart and Target for lots of grocery/household stuff.
Pack lunch every day.
I use my dryer less (hang clothes to dry).
Bring tea bags to work and use water from faculty lounge.
Switched rx to generic.

Re: Share Your Money Savings Tips

I used to get Starbucks almost every day. Now I make iced coffee with the free coffee at work. It's not the same but it does the job.

I go to the nail salon once a month now instead of every week or every two weeks.

We eat home more. We order less when we're out and share our dinners. We actually eat the leftovers instead of tossing them.

Shut every light when we leave the house or when we leave a room. We have our a/cs on energy save all the time.

Consolidated interest credit cards to 0% cards. Not that much debt but every penny counts.

Target for non-persishables. My parents go to Costco and we share some of the bulk items.

I need to find a produce co-op.

Do my own nails at home.

Cut coupons and shop at supermarkets where they double.

Use the $5 and $10 off King Kullen coupons at Stop and Shop (yes they still accept them)

Buy mostly store/generic brands- exactly the same on MOST things...

Re: Share Your Money Savings Tips

DH and I are trying an "all cash" experiment this week. We each took $100 out of the bank and that is the only money we are allowed to spend between Monday-Friday on our personal things. I think that could probably last me 3 weeks, but it was the amount we agreed on. On Friday, whatever money we have leftover we can decide if we want to go to dinner if there's enough left or if we are going to put it in our vacation fund. If there's no money left, we don't go out to eat Friday night, like we used to.

DH uses his CC for everything and every dollar or five dollar purchase here and there really adds up, so I'm hoping that it's a shock for him this week to actually see the cash leaving his wallet. I never used CC before I met him, but he uses them for everything and wants me to because we get "points" for every purchase....I'll report back!

I only shop for things on sale and I am a bit OCD about couponing :)

We use a cash back credit card for our gas purchases.

coupons, coupons, coupons!!!!!!

King Kullen most weeks has a $5 or $10 coupon in their circular that S&S accepts.

I always cut coupons from the Sunday Newsday and save so much $!

Re: Share Your Money Savings Tips

* raise the temp in the summer, lower it in the winter and wear a sweater inside.

* snowball debt

* i've started to slow down when driving and using my cruise control when on the highway

* hang clothes to dry on the line

* i've started to cook more

* i've started to gather information to start a price book

* i talked about finances with a friend and we decided to help each other (similar to LIF) so we'll be reading books and comparing notes

me too. I've been using CC when driving on highways for a long time. it really does make a difference - so does keeping it at 60 MPH.
