Re: Threads on political/social views?

Yes I avoid the standard ones like abortion and such because #1 even if you give a yes or no answer, you are bound to get somebody respond saying WHY?

And #2 it's no fun giving a simple yes or no answer and most of the time it's not worth the drama that will follow.

Never. No one will ever change anyone's mind on here, so it's not worth the effort.

I contact my local representatives via the mail to address the issues that are important to me and to get change (or LACK of change if I want a law to stand Chat Icon) My voice is heard, my opinion is heard by someone that can DO something about it. I actively annoy, I mean write my representatives. Chat Icon

Re: Threads on political/social views?

Some I do. Some I dont. Some I just state my opinions. Some I dont.

Sometimes I think people just want to start drama and debate. Sometimes I dont.

I think people lose sight of where they are and that posting their social and political views will make an impact and change others. They don't. People are who they are and not one person on these boards has ever persuaded me to change my views on anything no matter how passionate they are.

Re: Threads on political/social views?

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

I am just tired of going into lengthy explanations of why or why not.

People can't take your yes or no answer without you having to give an entire explanation and sometimes I don't feel like doing it. Especially because some people will still try to argue with you that you are wrong. JMO.

I can't help it - I always have to post my view even if I don't want to get involved with the drama. It is just that my views seem to ALWAYS be in the minority and I want other people who think like me to know that they aren't alone Chat Icon

Re: Threads on political/social views?

I usually don't participate (with the exception of the Clinton supporters thread). I usually just don't have the time, but I started a new job and my hours have changed and have more time in my mornings, which are your evenings, to post.

I will always vote on the polls, though.

sometimes I respond. heck, sometimes I even start one Chat Icon

other times I feel like a certain issue has been brought up so many times already - it's like beating a dead horse.

anyway, I sincerely doubt that anyone here is going to change someone's POV with a post.

Re: Threads on political/social views?

Even thought I am new I don't my mind to post my personal opinion but I don't ask other people why or why not they think one way or the other.

Rarely, but when it comes to abortion threads, I am not ashamed of my opinion and feel I don't have to hide it.

Sometimes I will - but usually just a simple answer to the poster's question.

Re: Threads on political/social views?

i usually do because i tend to be in the minority... but then people attack me and that's not cool. so it depends on how i'm feeling that day and what else has been mentioned on the thread.

Re: Threads on political/social views?

i don't usually respond for the same reasons i try not to discuss politics in real life my opinion is usually the minority and i do not like being attacked for my views just because they are different, i know not everyone does that but unfortunately i have had a few bad experiences with a coworker that end up with her yelling at me because i don't agree with her, which is ridiculous

but i do read them i like hearing other people's opinions

Re: Threads on political/social views?

See, I'm not ashamed of my views, because they are the values I was raised w/ and I think my parents did a pretty good job if I do say so myself. I do hate having to explain myself when I do not agree w/ certain things, and then have everybody pick at my explaination and try to convince me how wrong I am. When it comes to politics I feel that since there is a curtain that closes behind me when I go to the polls, it's really no ones business who anyone votes for...or why. Sometimes I agree w/ the majority, but it bothers me when I see that happen, even to someone else because I really do respect the opinions of others. I will read a thread, and even if I agree w/ it, I still remain quiet for the most part because I just don't want to get involved. It is sad though, because I would love to have a respectful dialogue that consists of different ideas. I think that's a better way for people to gain knowledge rather than have other people's ideas crammed down your throat.

Re: Threads on political/social views?

I typically don't as I don't want to be flamed for my own views - whatever they may be. Plus the fact that there are some of us who aren't exactly well known by the regular posters and I'm not one to stir the pot.

Re: Threads on political/social views?

Sometimes.

It honestly depends on my mood. Sometimes I do respond and sometimes I don't.

I will respond if I'm well informed on the topic and feel I can contribute in a meaningful way.

Other times I don't respond because I just don't have the time to get into the
"conversation" because I'm too busy at work! Chat Icon

As for those who've responded that they don't b/c they don't want to be flamed or attacked for their opinions, I'm sorry you feel this way. I would like to think we could all have a civil conversation about a topic and still accept that not everyone will have the same opinion.

As for those who don't like to elaborate on why they feel a certain way, I would say please don't take it personally, it's just that if you have a differing opinion and there's a discussion being had about a topic a lot of times people are curious to understand where you're coming from. They're not looking to attack you.

Yeah, there's that, too! I definitely don't avoid them because I am ashamed of my views, though. I am like Popeye, "I am what I am"
