Liberty Mutual. There is a canal at the other end of our block.

We have auto insurance with them as well.

My sister is approx. 2000ft from the water and had difficulty finding homeowners insurance. (And she works for Chubb!!!) I'll find out for you who she eventually went with.

We're approx. 1 mile and use USAA (but either you or a family member has to have served in the military.)

Allstate does not write new policies for LI.
Neither does nationwide.

Try state farm.

We just got a policy from Allstate (in suffolk county) on both home and auto and the home we are purchasing is less than 1000ft from the water.

Can I ask when you got your policy? When we called they told us they weren't writing here anymore. We ended up leaving them for auto also b/c we got a better deal having both with the same provider. I miss getting those refund checks every year.

I'm going to call them agian. When I called in Summer 06 they told me they weren't writing here anymore b/c of the potential for a devestating hurricane.

Re: Those who live close to the water...

We are 1600 feet from the water & wanted renter's insurance. State Farm refused and my friend wound up getting us a policy through Encompass insurance.

Good luck with the hunt. Chat Icon

Re: Those who live close to the water...

I'm confused b/c I was under the impression that it's not just your distance from the water but exactly where the flood zones are where you live. In other words, you may be x # of feet away from the water in one town and have lower insurance than someone the same distance from water in another town b/c they are in a flood zone and you are just outside of it. Obviously if you're that close you will be in a flood zone either way..just looking for some clarification

I think you are correct, it has to do with the flood zones.

I live right on the water, but on a bluff, so if you calculate the height of the bluff and the distance to the water, it's about 500 ft. from my house. So, we are very close to the water, but do not live in a flood zone because of the bluff, so we have no issues with insurance.

We're on the 4th floor of our building and wanted to get co-op insurance. Remember, we're like 60 feet up! We still had problems getting it. Anyway, we're about 300 feet from the water and we got it with state farm.

this is true. I live less than 200ft from the lake but its not tidal & we are on a hill so we are not in the flood area. We are also 1.5 miles from the long island sound. When our old company sent us the non-renewal last Spring I went right to state farm. We are paying much less than we paid before!
