Bottom line is that teachers are always the first to complain when schools are not closed, but you really do not see non-teachers complain (or not as loudly) when their offices are not closed. of story! I don't get blaming the mayor at all.

Actually that's not true and it's threads like this that make other teachers look bad. My husband got his butt up out of bed early and walked to the subway, not a peep out of him. Not a peep when the trains were shut down at 59th and he had to take a taxi the rest of the way. Not a peep when he got to school late. Not a peep when he continues with his lessons. The majority of his students and coworkers live in the area of the school so it's business as usual for them.

I don't know where everyone lives but from what I have read it seems that the people complaining are mostly those who have long commutes from Long Island.

This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!

I choose where I live and how I get to work...the reality is even when I lived in the 5 boroughs, there was no realistic way to get to my school in queens and I lived in queens..and as I always say.. It only takes some snow and in this case, ice, to bring out teacher haters..and it's fine...I don't need to justify my choices but it does stink...oh well

OMG too bad. EVERYONE I know went to work today. I'm so tired of seeing this every time it snows. Also, maybe if you have a job that requires a long commute in sometimes inclement weather, you should consider a better equipped (snow friendly) vehicle or moving closer to work. If you work in NYC and live in Suffolk, that is a choice you made for yourself.

Right- I have no idea what the percentage of NYCDOE teachers are from LI and now I'm curious. I bet it's on the smaller side. But I assume that was part of the decision making process when those teachers moved away from their job/decided to take a job so far away from home. This is bound to happen and it's part of their reality that they may need to take personal days.

Every time it snows I only hear teachers publicly complaining. It kind of makes it hard to not " hate". I'm not saying ALL teachers, but enough. On my fb there are a few teachers that will relentlessly post about the horrible mayor and having to work today. I don't see any other professional group standing out like that. Sorry but that's just the way i see it.

I'm not being snarky, but perhaps posts like this should be moved to or started on the "Teachers Only" board.

This wasn't snarky but several of your other posts were!

It's unfortunately my personality. Chat Icon Nonetheless, I am expected at work and teachers should be expected to go to work as well. It sucks, but honestly, while it makes their lives easier, snow day wreak havoc on non-teachers. They post these "woah is me" posts on a public board where many people struggled to get into work by scrambling for childcare or have to take a personal day.

I'm still waiting to hear an answer about whether teachers can take personal days.

I actually took a sick day today because yesterday when I left for work at 530am I slipped on ice and as I fell backwards I slammed the back my head into the bumper on my car and have a concussion.

NYC teachers get 10 days a year. If you take maternity leave you use the days in your bank. So I'm sure many teachers on here use their sick days very sparingly.

Thank you...was going to bring up about maternity but was scared of comments of how others give birth in the fields and keep on picking lol Chat Icon in all seriousness I am currently trying to save my days to have my baby in April but my feelings on safety won out today

That's the point: teachers commuting to work from LI/NJ or Timbuktu does not and should not factor into a decision to close NYC schools.

Re: This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!

I am DOE and I tried to go to work.

They hadn't plowed. I got stuck on my block trying to make a turn.

Took me 45 minutes and three helpers to get out.

I said heck no, turned around and went home.

For those who said "you choose where you work"... thank you for the sympathy Chat Icon although I'm hardly surprised.

FYI I would KILL to have a job on LI but I have the worst timing in the world and switched careers after everyone retired. It's a timing choice I have paid for in spades.

OP, you shouldn't have bothered, not because we are not entitled to vent but because it never ends well.

People can't even read our posts clearly. You said we're treated like babysitters...not that we regard ourselves as such. It was clear as day and people still jumped on your back. Incredible.

It is what it is.

Don't even bother on here.

It's because the MAJORITY of schools all across the tri-state area are closed today. As usual though, the money grubbing, POS NYDOE is open.

That's why you see city teachers complaining.

Re: This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!

Question :

When schools close for inclement weather in excess of what is allowed (2-3 days I think I read on here), does the school year run longer then ?

Not a parent, just curious.
Also at work today. Not worth taking a personal day.

But young children waiting around on bus stops in icy rain and walking the streets in bad icy weather conditions should be a consideration. Even if they don't give a $hit about teachers, having kids out and about on a day like today isn't really safe.

ETA - I wouldn't let my kids outside today. I don't know what parent would. Why risk it?

I get that. But what about the majority of jobs in general? I guess that's the part that gets me. Everyone else is at work like normal and don't really have someone to collectively blame.

Seriously. It makes me itch. I know SO many teachers who arent saying a word but now they look terrible.

ETA and then during budget talks, teachers complain about all the hate. This is where it comes from.

They usually take days from spring break and/or Memorial Day. School districts usually build into the calendar contingency days to account for the possibility of using too many snow days.

If you don't exceed your snow days you may have a 4 day Memorial Day weekend but if you went over they will start taking days away to make up for the school missed during a snow day.

This NYC Mayor is out of his mind!

I think whoever said the entire city should not be an entity is correct...there are parts of the city where public transport is not the viable option and panacea we say it is and I know for a fact it is not clean where I teach and won't be until the thaw...so general blanket statements do not work no matter your point of view

I understand it is worse on LI, but I'm in the city and it is just slushy. IMO, slushy does not equal school closing.

I'm interested to see the posts in April when spring break is shortened/canceled because of excessive snow days. Personally, I'd rather send my kids to school in the crappy weather so they can enjoy nicer weather.

Due to all the snow days, my kids have already lost the extra 2 days for Memorial Day weekend and a day in March. Going forward, the days come off of spring break.

I'm sorry but EVERYONE complains. My sister was b!tching about getting to work from Selden to Garden City. My mom complains about getting from Nesconset to Baldwin. My dad has to get into Manhattan and hates dealing with the delays on the LIRR.

None of them are teachers.

People complain. I don't care what your profession........Sitting in traffic, being out on icy roads, dealing with snow, etc. makes EVERYONE irritated. Nobody wants to deal with commuting on days like today.

Maybe you hear more from teachers because we're in a profession where inclement weather does translate into a closure (unlike other jobs) and when you see ALL the districts around you closing and you're stuck driving to work to sit and do nothing all day because most everyone is missing , it's frustrating.

But please, let's not make it seem like a teacher is the only one who complains about commuting, working, and so forth. It's human nature to get frustrated and vent no matter what you do for a living.

I also think that a delayed opening in NYC would have been fine, too...I would have had no issue leaving later and going in...it was just WHEN I had to leave that was the issue...I am not into extremes...

But city kids don't wait on bus stops generally. They walk to take the subway. There isn't bussing like on LI. This is why the schools don't close.

Schools are about the kids and not the teachers.
