Of my 29 students, 10 take yellow buses to and from school. This is nycdoe. Not only am I concerned for their safety at their bus stops (at 6:45/7 am), I am concerned for their safety on those buses because of the slippery streets and narrower than normal roads due to poor plowing/shoveling.

The idea that all kids live in walking distance in the 5 boros is ludicrous. So is the idea that they take mass transit. Maybe a delayed opening or closure for elem schools but keep high schools open would make more sense. Maybe going on a boros by boros basis would make sense. There are no subway stops near my school.

On days with poor weather, I had maybe 10 students in attendance. It's a bitter pill to swallow when you spend over an hour in the car driving in, up to 30 mins looking for a place to park on the street because there is no nicely plowed lot, then slip and slide for five blocks to get to work, and then not be able to teach anyway because there aren't any students in your class.

If I had different job where my day wasn't dictated by whether or not anyone else came in to work, I would feel differently. If we had a parking lot I would feel differently! For the record, my commute is normally 15-20 mins but can take upward of 1.5 hrs if the roads are bad, so no lecture about moving into a house across he street from where I work please.

You can still teach whether one or all of your students show. Teaching doesn't require a full or new lesson every day. Kids can still learn - and probably learn better - when not everyone is there.

Oh look. Another know it all who isn't a teacher.

First of all I refuse to have the same "free pay" conversation again. It's not a paid vacation but, again, Im not going to prove myself in that area again.

You can use your CAR plus 20 days and then you are removed from payroll and have your health benefits taken away. The 20 days that you borrow put you "in the negative" so that the next year if you or your child is ill you have no sick time to use. I have friends who had their babies 5 years ago and thy are still in the negative. So, if they found anew job or choose to stay home they'd have to pay the city back the money. It's like a loan it's not free pay!

Chat Icon Chat Icon

Then take the grace period if you want to stay on the payroll. I don't see what the deal here is.

And let me ask if it's not "paid vacation" then what is it? Do you really expect to double dip during the summer?

You're so ignorant. Really.

Every time you comment on anything on LIF I can't help but roll my eyes.

You're not a teacher therefore you have absolutely NO clue what you're talking about when it comes to the teaching work place, salary, sick days, maternity, etc........I don't give a crap what "research" you did. I find it so amusing how so many people think they are an expert when it comes to the teaching profession..........yet they never taught a day in their life.

You should stop talking now, nothing you say is worth even responding to anymore. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

here we go again...aves backChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sorry but nothing irks me more than NYC teachers complaining of no snow days. This is not a new thing. It's something that everyone knows about - including you - when you accept a job as an NYC teacher, choose to live where you live, etc.

MILLIONS of NYC school kids ONLY eat the meals they get through the free lunch program at school. Many of those same kids and others would be left unsupervised if there was no school.

So when mass transit is running and NYC roads are pretty much completely clear to drive on, like they were this morning, of course there is going to be school. If you don't feel safe, use your personal days and stay home. Or take mass transit whether it means waking up earlier and taking two busses and train or not. Millions of NYers do that as their daily commute. Yea it may be an inconvenience but it's a way to get to work when you have - like everyone else that had to go to work today.

You have a job when many Americans don't. Stop complaining about it.

Roads were not passable when I attempted the trip. LIRR had issues all day although there are no trains by my school anyway. And one issue we have that is unique is that we do t have parking lots so I have a shovel in my trunk so I can self plow out a spot. Yet this is the first time I made my own snow day by calling out. I'm happy to have my job but I'm tired of teachers being public enemy #1 and ease do t tell me others weren't unhappy about their commute today ad I'm sure any person who is the least bit honest will admit try complained a little too

I know this is a HUGE generalization but I see teachers, more than any other profession, complain about every.little.thing regarding their employment. Snow days, sick days. the UFT, the DOE, the mayor, the kids, the parents... look we KNOW you guys do a wonderful and often thankless job but the bottom line regarding your job - and EVERY OTHER JOB OUT THERE - is that YOU chose this. No one forced you to be a teacher. THAT is what makes you public enemy #1.

I disagree. What makes us the enemy is what everybody thinks we do what everybody thinks we get paid and the fact we have summers off Most, not all, people think we have it very easy and therefore should never be upset for being mistreated, not having a contract, or anything else. We, or at least I, do love teaching but I'm tired of defending my profession to a world that doesn't want to hear us no matter how valid our points.

The other day on a tread about somebody's salty I mentioned the world lacked compassion. This thread is further proof. To the OP I HOPE YOUR TRAVELS WERE SAFE TODAY

ETA: Also, when anyone brings up a good and valid point about teaching, or taking time off, or living somewhere remotely close to where you working instead of CHOOSING to live 45 min away, teachers are the first to get up in arms and claim that we are attacking them.

This - I complain about things about my job too, but I also don't do it so publicly (on facebook, public forums, etc), in part because I think that it's a bad idea to have certain complains out there, and in part because I know people will say the same thing to me that some say to the teachers on here - if you hate it so much, get a new job. Which obviously, isn't the solution. Everyone has things they love about their job, everyone has things they hate. That's part of life and being an adult. But I have a lot of facebook friends who are teachers, and I see them complaining about their jobs more than anyone else (as a group) - and again, I'm not saying that they don't necessarily have legit things to complain about. I'm just saying that they are more vocal about it.

And yes, I'm sure most people weren't thrilled with their commute today, I know that I wasn't happy to have to walk a block out of my way at each corner to find somewhere that I could walk because of giant puddles, but again - commutes are part of life and being an adult.

I don't think teachers have it any easier than non-teachers - yes they have more perks than some jobs, but also have less perks than some jobs (just like every other job). I just don't think teachers have it any harder than non-teachers, either.

Honestly, I also think that part of the problem that people see "teachers" complaining so much is that there are so many of us on here (and around) that we are all friends with. I have about 50 teacher friends on fb, 1 or 2 doctor friends, a few lawyer friends, nurse etc. They all make comments about their job. I also think that since most of us started as teachers, the profession has really diminished. As most of the parents are fighting against common core and big government being involved, we are the ones that have to go through it every day. If, when I went for the job, I had expected to do what I do now, I don't think I would have gotten into the job. Hence why I started my administrative degree and then stopped. And those of you who say get another job - yeah that is real easy! Honestly, I would love to go back to school to do something else, but with a house and a family that is just not possible or practical, especially after having a graduate degree in the field I am in. Can I move to another state? Sure, but a lot of this is not just NY!
Like I said previously, people complain - it is human nature. Unfortunately, there are so many private sector people who are so JEALOUS (because really that is what it comes down to) of the benefits that most people who are in a union get. There is no easy answer. Unfortunately, no one is going to change anyone's mind.

Ets: I used a sick day because my son's school was off. I looked at my attendance just now. In five periods I had: 6 kids, 6 kids, 6 kids, 3 kids, and 2 kids. That sounds like they got a lot of my lessons done! I can't imagine that a sub would with only 2 students in a class (if they even kept them in a class together!

Just because you are a licensed teacher, doesn't mean you actually work as one! There are plenty of licensed teachers that do not have jobs in a school district. Do you?

Being licensed and being a teacher are two different things.

Just sayin.

ETA - A better question............have you ever taught in the NYCDOE? It's a VERY different beast from LI.

I'm a licensed teacher. But thanks, I guess you thought YOU knew it all.

Just because you are a licensed teacher, doesn't mean you actually work as one! There are plenty of licensed teachers that do not have jobs in a school district. Do you?

I do work at a school. One that was open today.

Ets: forget it...I don't even know why I care.

OMG..... this is what irks me the most. I work in the South Bronx.... extremely high povery rate... 15% of or students showed up today. Students are not left alone because most of the population is on welfare and is at home..... my students turn their noses up at free lunch and bring in loads of junk food to eat instead..... all provided by their parents. School opening is not about feeding the hungry, it is about losing $$$ from Albany.

And "millions" isn't exactly accurate, as there are 1.1 million children in all of NY.

Eta: I'm sure there a quite a few kids who would be hungry or alone if not in school today, but it's most certainly not a majority. Sweeping generalizations are never good.

And being an ignorant teacher myself, I have to ask the question (as I only taught in the city for one year) what happens to these children who supposedly ONLY get a meal when school is in session on weekends and during breaks/summer vacation? I am assuming these families who are poor are receiving assistance such as WIC and food stamps to feed their families? Or am I just confused? This shouldn't be a surprise for NYC schools. They historically never close. It's not this mayor or the last.

ITA

Agreed. This weather is not nasty enough to warranty a city wide closing. When I was a kid in the city, YEARS would go by without a closing.

Not nasty enough? Easy for you to say! It's just that LI schools care about the staff & children. They're very fortunate. We on the other hand are treated like glorified babysitters!
Chat Icon

I understand that you are upset about the schools not closing, but everyone here is just saying that they have to go to work, made it to work without a problem and the fact that you have to teach on a snowy day does not make you a babysitter. If you feel that way, perhaps you should consider a new profession because you clearly do not empathize with working parents who have no choice but to go to work and I personally I always offended by the "babysitter" comment on snowy days.

I agree, this is a little disturbing. I hope my DDs teachers don't feel this way. I have 110% respect for their teachers and their choices. Each and every one they have had so far in this school. I also have faith and trust in the principal and other staff. If they need to take a day off today that is totally fine. If only 10 kids show up in the class, I hope that the teachers are not just "babysitting" and actually teaching them!

I just picked up my kids from their NYC school in eastern queens. All teachers were there and so were the kids. Regular day.

Off topic a little.

But the senior citizen center I volunteer at is always closed on days like today. As are most if not all of them run by the city. And I can tell you most of them depend on those meals. But I guess it's ok for the elderly to not eat.

I understand they are concerned for their safety, but at the same time they aren't getting fedChat Icon
Guess it's the lesser of two evils.
