SO, I made KJ sweet potatoes and squash and he LOVED both of them. I need to go out and buy some ice cube trays and I will be all set

one question - how long can you leave the baby food in the fridge?

tiaChat Icon

I just read they suggest using within 48 hours, but up to 72 is ok.

okay gals -

if i want to make emmers a broccoli & cauliflower puree - do i have to be sure she's okay with broccoli first & then cauliflower first - or can i do the mix??

also - would anyone mind sharing some things they've used...(i've done carrots and have the broccoli and cauliflower now).

and one more ???? - are all 'squash's' treated the same? i have recipes (in my cookbook & the beaba cookbook) for summer & winter squash, but not regular squash or spaghetti or butternut or acorn squash. i have NO idea about ANY of these veggies - as we don't eat them....(this is a HUGE problem for us with MANY veggies)...

I'm on board Chat Icon I've been making DD applesauce with organic apples for the past few days and she loves it with her cereal. I'm using the blender for now, but might look into the food processor. Yellow veggies are next... Thanks for a great thread & helpful tips!

Love this thread!

I made trays of bananas and apples this week (doctor rec'd starting with fruits). I'm going to do pears next.

So far so good - DD loves her bananas!

Keep the tips coming!

I have one for ya!! When you started her on meats chicken steak did you puree them also?? Mixed in with veggies??

What type of combo foods worked well together and you could freeze with no problem?
Right now I make her pears, applesauce, peaches, butternut squash, carrots, sweet potato I even combined carrots and pears.

She doesn't care for my veggie but she loves all the fruit. I need new ideas. She is starting to like sweet potato just mashed and I put it in little piece on her tray and she goes to town.

Nolan's first meat was chicken. I made a recipe from Annabel Karmel... chicken, sweet potato and apple (recipe called for grapes but I had apples) puree, made with sauteed leeks and homemade vegetable stock. He was not crazy about it at first but I think 1. I made it too thick and 2. I do not think I put enough apples in it. So I thin it down and add more apple or plum to it and he loves it (his poops smell like chicken Chat Icon ) I have some beef in the freezer to try next.

For good combos, Nolan loved blueberries and bananas! He likes peas and pears, apples and sweet potato or butternut squash.

If DD loves your fruit and not veggies, try mixing the veggies in with the fruit to give her the sweet. Dip the spoon in the veggie then the fruit so the fruit leads off. Then once in a while, slip in a full veggie spoon. Chat Icon

Ok now I have another question for ya
When did you start adding spice salt, pepper, garlic, butter, onions?

No salt! I have not really done spices yet... just olive oil, onions and leeks. I have a recipe in line to try that has cinnamon so that will be next.

ok ladies. I got the go ahead to start with fruits and veggies. Ped said I could start with whatever I wanted, but b/c DD gets a little constipated, she suggested staying away from apples and bananas for right now.

I really wanted to start with veggies first so we didn't get the sweet taste first.

Does it matter if i start with carrots or sweet potato or butternut squash?

I was thinking carrots first.

I have the beaba, so, I was just going to make some small batches freeze it up, and go that route.

Any advice. I have checked out wholesomebaby (great website), and have a few cookbooks in the house. I have also checked out annabel karmels site.

Right now I "feed on demand", it tends to be every 3 1/2 hours. She gets cereal 2x a day. Should I just start with the veggie in the morning, or do I go both morning and night right away?

Thanks! Ahh, feel so nervous for some reason, but excited as well!!!

Doesn't matter which orange veggie you start with but just stick to one for at least 3 days by itself to make sure no allergies. After you know she is not allergic to say sweet potato, and you move on to carrot, you can mix with the sweet potato.

When I started Nolan on "foods", he was getting cereal for breakfast and dinner. I added the food (sweet potato first) as a lunch with a BF before or after. Then as he got more foods and flavors, I added them to breakfast (fruits) and dinner (fruits, veggies, meat), reducing the amount of cereal.

The nervousness will go away and you'll feel so rewarded and proud that it's really not that hard to do! Chat Icon

I have also started making my twins baby food. I refuse to give them jarred meats..YUCKY!! To store them, I save the stage 1 gerber containers (which is a perfect portion for one feeding) and store them in the freezer. You could also put them in a zip lock freezer bag.

My mother helped me with this and just boiled everything together...chicken breast, carrots, peas, string beans, and sweet potato's (was one combo). We than used a blender to mix everything. My kids love it! To give it some sweetness, I usually add a swirl of applesauce to the meat mixture.

ETA: if it defrosts a little watery, I usually add about a teaspoon of rice to thicken it up.

I have the same question about the combos of new intros. I wonder if at some point we stop the three day allergy trial but I cannot see why. It can't hurt. So I still intro things alone that I plan to work into recipes in the future.

I'd do the cauliflower with the carrots and then try the brocolli with cauliflower. That being said, I personally would hesitate with brocolli AND cauliflower together. Rooty toot toot! Chat Icon Nolan does not have gas problems but he is a stinky farter! Chat Icon

Here's a winter/summer squash link... The term "summer" and "winter" for squash are only based on current usage, not on actuality. "Summer" types are on the market all winter; and "winter" types are on the markets in the late summer and fall, as well as winter. Thus, the terms "summer" and "winter" are deceptive and confusing. This terminology was never meant to confuse - it just dates back to a time when the seasons were more crucial to man's survival than they are now.

I would think as far as a recipe mentioning summer or winter squash... I'd say "winter" squash would be one that has a hard flesh with seeds to scoop out, like pumpkin, butternut, acorn, etc. "Summer" would be the type you'd cut up and use seeds, skin and all like zucchini and yellow squash. Mind you this is JMO.

Try zucchini... Nolan loved it. It was his second veggie. Steam it with the skin on and it makes a wonderful green puree! Careful not to over steam. It does not take long.

As far as sharing what Nolan has had (not in any particular order)...

Sweet Potato, zucchini, carrots, peas, butternut squash, apples, bananas, pears, plums, blueberries, mango, spinach, green beans, chicken (with sweet potato, leeks & apples), yo baby yogurts (all flavors, loves them, started when he was on antibiotics to help with diaper rash), yukon gold potato, potato leek and pea puree (not so crazy about but I mix it with fruit and he takes it) and homemade vegetable stock (for some combo recipes). I think that's all.

On deck... cauliflower, strawberries, dried apricots (boiled and pureed), dried prunes (boiled and pureed), cheddar cheese, flounder, beef and homemade chicken stock.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)

Sorry I'm filling up this thread! Just wanted to add another tip that I discovered... kind of on the what temp to serve the food subject.

I'm on board with not heating it every time so as not to get "spoiled" with warm food. So yes, do defrost my cubes the night before (I take out two days worth at a time) in the fridge (in recycled glass jars) but it's still ice cold. I do take it out before hand but sometimes that doesn't happen. We have an instant hot tap on our sink. So I've been making my purees thicker so I can thin them with the hot water, which by no means makes the food hot or even warm. Just takes the chill off and Nolan is fine with it.

He'll get warmish chicken with cold apples or warm BM in his cereal with cold yogurt. He's all good with it.

I'll also fill a cereal bowl with hot water and sit the jar in and stir to knock off the chill.

If you do not have instant hot on your sink or water cooler, microwave a bowl of water for a minute, then sit the jar in. I'm not a microwaver of food for the baby.

Hope my rambles help someone!

Now for my questions!

When did you start giving DC tiny bits to "play" with. He likes fingerpainting with mush. Nolan is 8 months and has 1 1/2 teeth. I've tried bits of banana, mum mum broken up. He does not like chunks on his tounge. Even the tiniest crumb, he gags on. He took a wedge of peach and scraped some off with his teeth. That he liked. And he wanted the whole banana, not the bits. Liked licking it but got off too big of a piece and gagged. The mum mums dissolve but he still did not like the bits in his mouth. I'm not rushing it but I try occassionally to let him experiment. My sister mentioned those mesh things but that might make me gag!

I check out the jarred foods for combo ideas, portion size and texture and the stage 2 puree looked more watery than what Nolan has.

And when is officially "stage 2", "stage 3"?

Tell me about it! I can stand in front of the sour cream and cottage cheese for 20 minutes to find what I want!!

I give Nolan the Yo Baby brand by Stonyfield. They sell 6 packs of yogurt with fruit and 4 packs of yogurt with fruit and veggies at the bottom. They are organic too. It's mixed in with the kids yogurts.

You may want to ask your doc about the corn too. I bought frozen organic corn, steamed it up, pureed it and then wondered if I should sieve it because the skins looked like they could stick in his throat. When I checked my books... no corn listed in the index. Looked up online and found that corn is not advised for babies as it is a high allergen food. So Gregg and I have a nice base for some corn chowder!

That being said... so are strawberries, a higher risk for allergies but I made a recipe from my book this morning and Nolan loved it!

Apple, Pear, Blueberry & Strawberry Puree

1 sweet eating apple peeled, cored and chopped
1 ripe pear peeled, cored and chopped
1/3 cup strawberries, hulled adn cut into quarters
1/3 cup blueberries
2 tbsp baby rice cereal (I used a mix of oatmeal and rice)

Put the fruit into a heavy bottomed saucepan, cover and cook over a low heat for about 5 minutes (says no water so I did not put water and it was fine). Puree in a blender adn stir in the baby rice cereal.

Variation: instead of rice cereal, you could mix with bananas.

Makes 2 portions (but I split it in 4 portions to go along with other food in a meal). Suitable for freezing. Provides fiber, potassium and vitamin C. From Annabel Karmel First Meals.

Have you tried mixing the veggies with some of her cereal? Maybe thin it with her formula too. So she has a familiar taste. Try it thicker or thinner and try it the next day or next meal and you may get a different response.

I gave Nolan peas with cereal that was too thick for dinner. The first spoon made him gag and throw up some afternoon BF. I cleaned him up, new bib, thinned it down and he was fine with it! This kid likes his food liquified!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)

I have some questions about stage 2 feeding...

Nolan is 9 months and eats about two stage 2 jars (I use recycled jars for my thawing/feeding), which is about 8 cubes/tablespoons, per meal. Be it a yogurt and a veggie or a chicken recipe and a fruit. That's a lot of cube rotation!

My question is... how do you store and freeze when the portions increase?

The stage 2 jars I have only fit two frozen cubes at a time. When they thaw, I'll mash two more in but sometimes I forget.

Have you frozen in larger containers than cube trays? How do they thaw being a bigger chunk of ice?

And I'll be making Nolan a fish (flounder) recipe for the first time today. Anyone try fish? How did it go?

PSA... Finger foods introduced to Nolan at around 8 1/2 months... Puffs, cheerios, pancake, french toast, cheddar cheese (grated with the largest holes on the grater), banana chunks and cut up blueberries.

I use these - they are 2 oz/each. I pop them out and put them in freezer zip lock bags.

DD gets one fruit and one veggie for lunch and for dinner.

Hello Ladies -

DD is 5.5 months now and loving her fruits. So far I've made apples, bananas, pears, plums and peaches. Are there any other fruits I should try at this age?

Doc will recommend veggies at the 6 month check so right now I'm just looking for fruits.

TIA!

I did try mango and Nolan liked it. Avacado is technically a fruit. He liked that too. And play with combos of you've done already. Chat Icon

Last night I mixed avacado and banana - DS really seemed to like it. He's had both before but I think the sweet in the banana really made his enjoy the avacado even more. And so easy!!!

We did prunes. First, you need to put them in boiling water for a few minutes so they get tender and are not chewy. Then, add water and puree.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)

so - i'm going to start offering larger chunkier purees....

i think psycho diva (my petname for bunny) was only insane picky because her top tooth was coming in (it took forever to break).....

the SITTER has given her: peas, apples, squash, carrots all 100% successfully. for me - it takes longer, but i make it work. dave is doing carrots for lunch today - should be interesting & i'm expecting a call any time now - with how frustrated he is! :)

i have written down SO many things from this thread to try for her - so THANK YOU for starting this thread & to everyone for keeping it going!!!

tip - use FUJI apples instead of red delicious - they're sweeter & Em DEFINITELY liked them a LOT better than the red.

so tonight's shopping trip shall include:
apples
french toast sticks
blueberries
yo baby yogurt
plums
pears
mango
strawberries
avocado

we've also progressed to cheerios & puffs! VERY happy with the happy bellies puffs!

how is everyone else doing??
