Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!

I was in Broadway mall looking for a power converter (not adapter) in Radio Shack. I needed it bc I was going to study abroad and the voltage needed to be converted for my portable CD burner. I luckily had enough cash bc no machines were working and I wanted to buy it then bc I was leaving in a few days and I didn't have time to come back.

I wound up never using it.

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!

I worked for a woman out of her house. She was out and we had a new girl working with us. I was freaked out at first b/c I thought was another terrorist attack.

After an hour or so of sitting around not being able to work since we had no computers, I had gone to my car to see if there was any info on the radio. When I realized it sounded like it was going to be a while, I sent the girl home.
When my boss finally returned, she had no idea the blackout was going on. I think she had been at the beach meditating or something. She seemed very pissed when I told her I had let the other girl leave. When she finally realized what had happened, she let me go.

That night, DH and I had no power in our place and it was hot. We lived right next to his work at the time and they had a generator so we grabbed some hotdogs and stuff and went over to his work to heat our food up and play on the computer for a while.

Luckily for us, our power came back around midnight or so, so our A/C came back on and it wasn't too bad.

Re: the blackout was 10 yrs ago today!

In my office on the 40th floor.
Had to walk all the way down, then walked uptown to the 59th street bridge and over it.
Thankfully the express buses were on the Queens side and I was able to get on one to take me home to Bayside.

I remember getting off the bus at about 8pm, and all my neighbors were outside and yelling out There she is ! when I got there. Barbeques were pulled out, flashlights and candles distributed amongst the neighbors who did not have any.

Gave me goosebumps because that was the same thing I did on 9/11, except there were no buses and I had to walk into Astoria to my sis's MIL.

I was on a bus going to take care of my godmothers dog who I was watching, who lived on the 33rd floor of a building in manhattan. My stepdad saved the day and walked up there to make sure she was taken care of. I will never forget how crazy the city was that day!

I was upstate visiting colleges with my parents, so we were at a hotel. Every single restaurant closed down. We had no food.

A guy staying at the hotel had his guitar with him, so we all sat outside. Everyone gathered whatever food they could...chocolate, nuts, whatever....and just sat there listening to music.

I'm surprised you don't remember it.
It was huge! Covered many of the Northeast and Midwestern states.

Were you away at the time?

I was at work at a dentist office in Great Neck. We had a patient in the chair. The doc used the last of the air while I held a flashlight fixed on the patient's mouth lol. After a few hour commute home I went to a pool party that was lit by candles. cant believe that was 10 years ago!!

STUCK IN THE SUBWAY!!
After that I never wore flip flops in the subway again. We were sweating in the cars for what seemed like hours (actually it was about 4 hours) and then they escorted us through the tunnels out to 51st street. i came out completely black hands, face and feet, tried to buy a soda but the assholle tried to charge me $5 which I didnt even have in my pcket.
I walked home over the queens bridge and my EX boyfriend joked that we didnt have water so I couldnt shower. I almost knocked him over the head.

I was working in a bank at the time and they wouldn't let us leave for quite some time. We had zero security alarms - not fun.

I was at work in Garden City. Our power went out a lot in that office building. After an hour, when it became clear it was a blackout they sent us home and it took me about 2½ hours to get home to Babylon.

Finally got home to no power, no lights nothing. My neighbors and I (I was living in an apt complex) went up to 7-11 and bought some beer and some portable charcoal grills. We all went down to the pool and swam, BBQ-d and drank until around 1 am.

I was working at a newspaper at that time. Once they realized what was going on, after a period of fear over what it might have been, they sent us home. I remember it being incredibly hot. So a bunch of friend's came over with all the beer and food in all of our fridges and we had a black out party/bbq with about 10 friends. Lol
