The biological clock...

Today it really dawned on me. I'll be 34 this summer. I was married just a few days after my 33rd birthday.

Today we were talking about maternity leaves at lunch. I do not have baby fever whatsoever - I'm actually pretty sure we're not ready. Besides, I really should wait til I'm tenured.

But the fact that I'm going to be 34 and probably won't have a baby til I'm past 35 worries me. Am I crazy?

Anyone else have their biological clock ticking VERY loudly right now? I never cared before but it really hit me today!Chat Icon I know people are having babies later in life...but I guess hearing that I'm so close to 35...I just never imaged having kids that late into my 30's.Chat Icon

Thanks for listening!

Re: The biological clock...

TOTALLY!

and last night, i went to a seminar on fertility awareness and charting and all that... and it was so interesting. She spoke a lot about how pill use has increased infertility as it depletes your uterine lining (didn't know that!) and the difficulties you can face after age 35.

I think if tenure is holding you back, dont' let it!!! they'll just push back your tenure date. it's more important that you have a healthy pregnancy when you're reaady!

Re: The biological clock...

My clock is BLARING. I'm surprised the neighbors can't hear it. Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to take the call right now. It really upsets me because I always wanted my children to be close in age and I know that even if I do have one down the road, the gap will be much larger than I ever wanted.

Re: The biological clock...

Ha.

I had my first son at 31 and my second at 33. I was concerned about my age then..

I will be 39 in May and it recently occurred to me that I may never have that 3rd child if I don't get to work soon.

The challenge is that my youngest is going to be in kindergarten in September and we will finally be free of the insane child care costs... so I am not willing to jump back into the infant stage. But I really want a 3rd. But I don't feel ready just exactly yet..

Then again - I wasn't ready for either of the others!

Re: The biological clock...

Yep it's ticking loud and clear... We've been TTC for almost a year now and the longer it takes the louder that clock gets.

I'm going to be 31 this year.

As someone from the other perspective, I heard the clock ticking away (I am 30), went for it, am now 7 weeks and while I am thrilled, I am panicking that we are not ready.

I know they say you are never ready, but it is just such a life changing thing. I think it is better to jump in when KNOW you are 100%.

i'll be 34 in december and we're not going to start until october this year if we even do it then. i'm worried about waiting even a day longer but i'm not ready yet so it wouldn't be fair to get pregnant now. don't worry. you'll be ready when its your time not the clocks timeChat Icon

Re: The biological clock...

i feel soooo like you. i will be turning 33 this year and hubby turning 36.
my ovaries tell me to hurry up an ttc bc of pcos and other things that may be obstacles for me to conceive....yet i am not in a profession that even allows me any time off( paid or anything) for maternity leave. so if i have a baby..... there would not be enough money to make ends meet.
plus we live in a one bedroom apt.
so i am in need of going to school and finding a new profession to supply me witha career with benefits to have time off to have kids.... yet...by the time that would happen.... i might be too old or unable to conceive.

talk about torn.

and also the older i get the scarier it becomes to reallllllly think about what i means to care for another living breathing human being.

then again i see my husband andi want so much to have a baby with him that it hurts.

friggin biological clock. grrrr!! lol

Re: The biological clock...

We just had DS, and conceived him at 39. Did I want to wait this long? No, but we didn't get married until I was 37, and it took about 1 1/2 years to conceive. Not trying to scare you though, lots of women over 35 conceive quickly.

Really, in my mind, you have a good amount of time. Take a bit of time to enjoy being married and then see how you feel about children.

Re: The biological clock...

I felt the same way, terrified of waiting too long to have a baby..

I didn't get married until I was 34, and we waited about 6 months after the wedding to TTC (wanted a house first). I was convinced it was going to take us a long time due to my age. Plus, I was on the Pill for over 10 years and had no clue about my fertility.

Well- it all worked out- I got pregnant two months after going off the Pill, gave birth to my DS at age 35- healthy and normal pregnancy! My doctor even said that most of his patients are in the range of 33-42 these days. Many women delay childbearing beyond their twenties now.
You have time!! Try not to stress.

YES, ticking away! I'm still pretty young (will be 28 in May) but I always wanted to have my 1st in my mid-twenties.

I have IF issues, so I have to keep on top of things, quite literally. Chat Icon

Yes I hear it!!
I always wanted to have my first before I was 30. I started trying at 28, so when my 30th birthday came around last month, it was very hard for me.

Re: The biological clock...

Well I had DS just after I turned 33 last year. We are hoping to have DC#2 next year and so I'll be around 35. I really want 3 so I'll be in my later 30's by then. I hear the clock ticking every day but I'm not quite ready to answer yet. If I had kids, I always thought I'd be done by now. Just goes to show you can't always have what you want, when you want it.

Re: The biological clock...

DH and I just got married 1.5 years ago and knew from the beginning we dated that if it "worked" out we would have to TTC right away. We BOTH had a biologial clock.

I was 37 when I got PG and turned 38 after DS was born.

I heard that I only had 10% to get PG, blah blah blah. We conceived the 2nd month we tried.

We are hoping for 1 more so I am thinking we will TTC this fall. I will be 39 and turning 40 next year. That's will be pushing it a bit. But what can you do. I did not meet DH until I was 35. Got married at 36 and got PG 2 months later (by then I had just turned 37).
