I for one need to sleep, I guess most people on this board don't and that is great

Most people on this board have small children. We think of sleep as nostalgic, something we haven't had in a long time and pine for on a daily basisChat Icon

I'm up before 7am and frequently text my friends that early, or earlier. We're all up.

IMO, it's not the same as a phone call but I could see how some people consider it the same.

Texting time etiquette

I text when I text. If something pops into my head that I want to tell a friend, even if it is 6 am, I do it. Depending on the friend, some are up and respond right away, some I won't hear back from for a few hours. I am usually in bed and asleep by 10, I am up between 5:30-6 each morning with the baby. I have a few friends who will text me at 10 or 11, they get their response at 6 am lol. If I don't answer then, I will end up with a text later that day, "hey, did you get my text from last night?", because I will have forgotten to answer.

Texting time etiquette

I'll add my two cents, mostly because just last night I was about to text someone and stopped myself when I saw what time it was. I will often do the same in the morning. I personally, wouldn't text anyone before 8am or after 11pm. I wouldn't call anyone (except my mom or brother) after 9pm either. I think texting is a bit different than a phone call bc its not as intrusive and quite frankly I wouldn't want to deal with talking to someone after 9pm bc im tired but would be ok with a text. But there is really no need IMO to text someone in the middle of the night-- really-- no need.

Re: Texting time etiquette

I don't mind getting a text any time of day/ night. To me it's not the same as a call. With a text I can ignore it until later and if I'm asleep I won't even notice it. My brother works overnights usually and so if I'm up or he's up we text/ share links to stuff on fb msgr with each other at any hour and I'm not offended if I don't hear back right away. On the other hand, my other brother gets up at like 5 am every day so will sometimes call the house phone ridiculously early (like 6:30) just to say hello and that drives us crazy bc I want my kids (and myself) to sleep in a little bit esp on a weekend.
That said I generally won't text most people after about 9:30/10 or before about 7:30/8 for regular conversation unless it's an emergency.

So ironic that this is a topic.
Just recently I had a disagreement with my sister about getting texted from her - very early , like 530 and 630- in the morning.
I told her after 7 is better and honestly less rude.

I don't put texts in the same catergory as emails.

I believe after 7am is reasonable.
And anything after 9pm is too late.

Re: Texting time etiquette

On my phone, emails and text both have alerts that sound as soon as I get them, so in the context of this thread, they are the same. I don't leave my phone in my room at night, so I don't care who texts or emails me during off-hours.

Since there is obviously no consistency among phone users, as far as alerts, DnD, email vs text, "appropriate times", etc, I try to keep conversations with people I don't know very well between 8am and 10pm. If I know them, and know their habits, I'll text or email at other times during the night.

Texting time etiquette

My theory in life is you can only control yourself and not others. So if you don't like getting texts outside of set hours do not have your phone in your bedroom or have another way to silence the alerts or cut off the world.

I personally don't get upset about things like this. If timing of a text, phone call email is paramount then be thankful.
