They are saying the variant has a short incubation period which is why it's spreading so fast. With that being the case you'd know very soon after exposure if you are sick. It would make sense for them to shorten quarantine requirements.

They did say tonight that they are considering shortening quarantines for vaccinated people.

So my friend's boyfriend is an assistant principal in a school here on Long Island. She was telling me that he is the one that does the contact tracing and quarantining of the kids who are deemed "close contacts". He said not one close contact he had to quarantine has come up positive themselves.
Not one.
So yes this would be a very good thing.
Keeping healthy kids home for so long is beyond detrimental to them.

I agree - I've spoken with our MS principal and she can say for certain that there is no spread in schools - we had an outbreak before Thanksgiving (which was actually more cases than after Thanksgiving) and she said there was no pattern that showed it was spreading at school - it was very random (from a school perspective but all of the kids in question were hanging out outside of school).

People are fearing a post holiday school shutdown though still...

I think at this point the possible shutdowns are due to there not being enough adults in the building.
Subs are impossible to come by right now.

That makes sense.

I just fear if we shut down for 2 weeks after the holidays we won't go back until spring.

This is my fear as well. My DD’s teacher, who is not a panicker, sent an email that she’s sending home packets in case we are remote in January.

Meanwhile, everyone is traveling like nothing is happening. So they’ll cry covid when it comes to keeping kids in school but have no issue traipsing all over the world. It infuriates me.

This IS the issue. All TAs who should be working with students are being pulled to cover classes. The other day a secretary covered a study hall. There are no subs.

Forgive my ignorance and I promise I’m not being snarky- but why? Why are there no adults in the building? Where did they go?

You didn't quote me but I'll answer because I'm also in a HS and we are having the same issue.

We had a few teachers out with Covid but on any given day a few teachers are always also out for non Covid related reasons. So already the need for subs is higher.

On top of that no one actually wants to sub right now. Many subs are retired teachers who understandably don't want to sub for health reasons. Younger subs are scarce because they generally have better opportunities because the job market is so strong.

My building has two subs who are very young with fledging businesses and appreciate the flexibility of subbing. But they are not always available and we are pulling staff from all sorts of spots to cover. I am out of the classroom but covering classes here and there myself. It sucks and I think it will get worse before it gets better.

Yes to all of the above.

Retired teachers don’t want to sub due to Covid.

Lots of people retired last year at my school so many young teachers were able to get full time positions

Teachers are out with Covid or they are out because their kids have Covid or need to quarantine and they need to take care of them.

Teachers like everyone else get sick with things other than Covid or have doctor’s appointments or have personal obligations that require them to take time off.

If there is inadequate sub coverage, there is no one to watch students.

I am all for this however, I would hope that the schools would then offer testing. I feel like it is impossible to go to an urgent care for a test anymore.

Test to stay?

Omg enough of the testing!! I couldn’t get my kid seen anywhere for a possible ear infection!! Everyone is bombarded with Covid testing when there is no reason!!!! I was told to go to the ER if they are in that much pain and I can’t wait till later the next day for the next available appointment!! Wonder why the ER is over run, between staffing shortages and people not being able to be seen for actual illnesses that don’t warrant an ER visit. I cringe when my kids come home from school and say something bothers them bc I know there is no where to go and our only options are the ER, pediatrician appointment the next day….usually booked up till late afternoon, or wait in line with a sick kid at 6am for hours.

I honestly think doctor's offices and urgent cares should not offer tests. They should be for other illnesses that need treatment - like strep, ear infections etc
Set up testing sites at the state places like Stonybrook and Jones Beach
you want a covid test you can sit in your car there for 4 hours
This is clogging up the doctor's and urgent cares for people who need treatment for other things

Yes!!! This is ridiculous at this point. I was literally pleading with urgent cares to just let me bring my child in to have their ear looked at and they all weren’t taking any more walk ins.

I heard on the news they were closing two testing sites…..then they go on to say it is two City MDs. Those aren’t testing sites….they are urgent care!!! When did this all happen? Someone could make a killing right now if they opened an urgent care that didn’t offer Covid testing lol

Your Ped won’t see them?? Ours will only offer a Covid test if you are actually ill and come in for a sick visit. No “just because” testing.

My Ped office sucks in many ways but I’ve been able to get my 2 kids in for other illnesses no problem recently.

My concern- especially with children- is that there are many illnesses that require antibiotics ASAP Like strep and ear infections and UTI's. And the flu too- if you don't start Tamiflu fast it's useless.
But with Covid- ok yeah you're positive- go home.
No treatment unless you get really sick and need a hospital.
So people are getting delayed in being seen for an illness that needs meds and treatment ASAP- for an illness that you can't do anything for...just so people can know for sure they have it?
More madness

Nope. If I don’t call by noon they aren’t taking anymore appointments and won’t schedule doesn’t next day….I have to call like I’m trying to win concert tickets at 8am

Ours will only offer tests if symptomatic or exposed but they have been slammed this week - one of the Drs wives responded to a post on FB that on Monday, they did the most tests and got the most positives ever.

It's crazy too because you can't get into urgent cares because of testing. Someone couldn't get their child seen yesterday with potentail pink eye.

I can't wrap my brain around why they got rid of the Stony Brook Drive Through testing State site. It makes zero sense

They got rid of the one here in Rockland too - I guess they felt there wasn't a need as they declared Covid over and told vaccinated people they didn't need to test anymore. And now - we are back where we started...
