They are testing you!!! They want you to leave!!! Remember, city schools are HARD!!!!! The disciplinary actions that you can take are really restricted, so you have to be clever. I agree with Stef, but I would add an incentive. Food. Kids love food. And watch that Michelle Pfeiffer movie, ah, what the hecks the name??? Dangerous Minds. I know it's a movie, but she kicks some a$$ in it.
Anyway, teach to those who want to learn. The others will follow. And start a rewards system, reward the good behavior!!

I work in what is considered an excellent district on LI. We had a teacher um 'lose it' and need to take a little 'vacation' a couple of years ago. Anyways it took over a month before they were able to get a new teacher. Anyways they gave her such a hard time! I mean horrible things were said to her because she was black and our school is 99% white. It was bad. But you know what she stuck it out and each day whittled away at them. In the end they LOVED her. Being threatened is not teaching but teaching is not always the 3 R's either.Sometimes the biggest rewards in teaching are life's lessons, like not everyone will leave me if I am bad. That just because I am from a bad area doesn't mean I have to be bad- things like that.
I know that it's hard! Believe me I know, but don't give up.
