Taking the Pacifier Away

Please tell me how you did it. I put Ryan in the crib at 1:00 and he is still awake, just playing. He will not sleep without the paci! But I really want to take it away because he would like to have it all the time, not just in the crib, and it's such a battle. Any suggestions?

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

My dd is 2 1/2. she used to want the binky all of the time, even running around she wanted that thing in her mouth. I never wanted to argue so I just went with it. However one day my sister came by with her newborn and my dd realized that only babies wanted binkies. So she told me that she would only use it in her crib. So that's where it stays. She isn't allowed to take it out.
I know I have to eventually take it away but for now it's a good compromise.

My DD is almost 9 months old. For the past two months we only give it to her when she sleeps - naps and nightime. She is fine with that. She doesn't look for it during the day. There are times when she is fussy and I know that if I gave her the pacifier she'd calm down, but we just don't and she has learned how to calm herself in other ways.

We gave it away to the "Binky Fairy"
Literally left them on a plate so that the fairy could take them and give them to all the babies in the world that need them. Bella was then left a treat and a coloring book.

She never asked for it again.

DS is 18 months and is only allowed to have it for sleeping. He knows at bedtime he can ask for it, and when he wakes up he has to give it to us. Once i get a feel for his transition with the new baby in the house, i will take it away- definilty by 2. He is not allowed to have it at any other time, and he is fine with that.

My nephew did this too. They spoke to him about the fairy and how she comes and takes the binkys for new babies being born, etc. And that she would leave him a gift of his choice in place of his binky. So he chose the gift and the night and put the binky out for hte fairy and the next day got his train.

He asked for it a few times but they reminded him of what happened and he moved on.

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

Thanks so much ladies. Ryan used to be fine with only having it in the crib. Starting recently, he wants it even when he's running around the house playing, and I'm tired of telling him it's for the crib only. I just want it gone. I don't know if he'd be willing to give them to the binky fairy. I may try it! Thanks!

DD only gets it when she is in the crib...when she gets up in the morning she puts it under her pillow. I hope to be able to wean her from it at some point, but haven't taken that big step yet.

(PS I do actually carry it with me and if she gets tired and cranky and we're out, I do give it to her....)

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

i did it as soon as DS got his top teeth...which he was abour 13 months i guess.
i just did it cold turkey...he cried for 2 nights or so and then never thought about it or asked again. The fact that your DC was up playing in his crib, and not crying or anything, i dont think is that bad...i think eventually he will learn to fall asleep without it and get tired.Chat Icon
maybe you could start off slow..give it to him only at bed and not during the day then slowly wean him at bedtime?

Exact same thing here.

Every morning when I go to get him I say "Where does the binky go?"

And he puts it down on his pillow.

DH and I agreed that at 2 he's cut off.

Bella ONLY had it at night and for naps from about 10 months...so it never left the crib...I put it off for awhile because I was scared how she would react.

We started planting the seed for about a week or so before we did it...that helped to.

I cannot take credit for this idea...I watched ONE episode of the Supernanny and I thank my lucky stars that I did...

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

DS had his binky in his mouth at ALL times. We actually ended up cutting a hole in it. He immediately lost interest in it. He would say "It broken". I think I actually got that pointer on here and I'm SO glad that I did. I had thought taking it away was going to be torture.

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

We are working on it now and its HARD.

He screams for it and knows where we keep them, so he moves the kitchen chairs over to the cabinets to go looking for them all day ( and we have had to hide them) ...( he even knows that he drops them at night out of his crib so yesterday he went and pulled all the stuff out from under his crib, and crawled under there looking and yelling for one!!) but we are trying to stick to our guns and not give him one.

Its so-so....But we are trying to do only at nighttime...And then will wean from there.

I read on here to cut the tip off so the sucking motion doesnt give them anything. Thats my next step.

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

You can do it. The first 2-3 days will be the worst.

We stopped DD cold-turkey at 17 months (after trying cutting the tips/limiting her time w/ them at 15 months, but that didn't work for us). After 3 days she was fine. It's been 2 months now & she's fine w/o it.

The ped says after 18 months it gets much harder.

Good luck! DD is 2 1/2 and I am not ready to take it yet. It doesn't really bother me as long as its not hanging out of her mouth all day. After all, I sucked my thumb until I was 11 and no one could take it away from me (although they tried!) and I think I turned out okChat Icon

Re: Taking the Pacifier Away

My DD is 28 months and I can see the struggle on the horizon. She only has it for naps & night sleep but will start asking for it 1/2 hour before sleep. We give it to her then b/c she is tired & winding down.

We were going to wean her before the next baby came but we've just put it off. We'll wait until after she gets over the shock of the new baby & go from there.

We also gave it to the Binky Fairy. Marron was all on board until nighttime came. It was torture putting her to bed. The next night (and several times since then), she still asks for it and when we tell her that she gave them to the Binky Fairy and she got a present for them she tells me "Well, I don't even WANT those fingerpaints. I just want my binky back!" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
