Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?

I don’t understand why people are telling us to take it more seriously. What am I suppose to do to take this more seriously? Worry, panic, scream and cry of hysteria? Even if I wanted to, which I don’t, that will scare the crap out of my son. I’m the adult and the parent, that’s my job. Why would I cause him fear, stress and panic. Every time I hear take it more serious I ask people what they mean and want they want me to do, and they have no answer.

I always clean my house, wash clothes a lot and take showers daily. I have food in my house, I am not working so don’t have to worry about that aspect, I go workout and do regular errands that aren’t with a massive group. No one in my house is sick, not even an allergy sniffle. I told my DS to use the Purell stations in the building. I’m not going to lock us in the house full time when it’s not warranted.

My husband has to go to work because if he doesn’t he doesn’t get paid. No money, no food, no rent, no apartment. We can’t survive on my unemployment check and with all this chaos who knows when I will be able to get a job now. That good economy with the job surplus is now crumbling. This is what I am worried about.

And yes, I say media hype because I feel they are perpetuating the story to cause panic and hysteria starting from 6 weeks ago. If they reported it better and handled the situation, I wouldn’t have to say there was media hype. Just because I don’t agree or like the inaccurate reports doesn’t mean I don’t think this is a serious virus or threat. But all the other viruses were serious threats as well.

all of this.
Also unemployed, so the only thing worrying me is trying to look for a job in a market where people are avoiding each other and interviews are impossible.
DH was told to work form home. DS washes his hands the second he gets home. All extra curricular activities have been cancelled so it's just school then home. You better believe I am sending them out to the park to get some of that energy out.
As long as we practice good hygiene and keep things clean, there's not much we can do.

Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?

I’ve taken it seriously from day one. But I admit, I am a germaphobe. I excessively clean In general and even more so during flu and stomach bug season. Mainly because 1. Who wants to get any of that but 2. I have fibromyalgia and get horrific flares when I get sick and can stay in a flare for weeks on end while my immune system calms down.

With this particular virus, I am mostly concerned for my husband, who as many of you know is healing from surgery with wound complications, and worry for my inlaws who are 67-70 one of them has some health issues. I’m worried about my friends and family in healthcare, a family member currently getting chemo, and the fact that the hospitals can only help so many people and my heart breaks for the elderly who are alone during something that can be super scary.

Because of this I am cleaning the house every time anyone comes and goes. I’ve pretty much banned any unnecessary visitors. And trying to keep both of us healthy until he Is healed enough to fight this or any other virus that comes our way.

Taking the Coronavirus seriously?

If anything good has come from this, it's that people now know it's a serious thing to wash your hands! I bet illness rates drop in general. The strep, the flu, the stomach virus. All that crap that keeps hundreds of kids from school in the district each year. Maybe that will all be lessened since it's now been instilled the importance of proper hand washing

Yeah and he shook hands with some of the people on the podium with him. Some of the people put their hands on the microphone to adjust it for them to speak.

Chat Icon

When he was asked if he was going to get tested , he sort of seemed to brush it off

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s positive for it though. Not that we’d ever know.

Did anyone else think he sounded weird the way he was breathing the other night? My friends and I were calling him Bane

Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?

It's not that I'm not taking it seriously, it's that there is really not much I can do but wash my hands and hope for the best.

I can't not work or I won't make money and then I will not pay my bills and will then have bigger problems than getting the virus. And I'm one of the lucky ones that still has a job. My husband doesn't now because he is in an industry where every single thing has been shut down indefinitely. This is going to affect so many individuals and businesses and many won't be able to recover.

I'm not going gallivanting around the mall for fun and I'm not going to amusement parks but I do have to leave my house. I can't not go to the store to buy food for my family - no, I'm not hoarding and yes, I am trying to limit my trips and stock up as best as I can. But I don't think most people are able to have a month's worth of food in their house to feed a family of 4.

From what I have seen from friends, family and co-workers, if someone is sick they are staying home. Sure, maybe they can't get tested for the virus, but does that really matter if they are going to stay home anyway? Thankfully their symptoms are not severe and hopefully it is not the virus.

And yes, many people joke about the virus and I think that is okay because people are nervous and anxious and sometime you just gotta take a break and try to laugh. Everything in the country has basically been cancelled so now we wait to see what happens to the numbers. I guess what I am saying is that I think people ARE actually taking it seriously but at the same time cannot always hide in their homes terrified for months.

I’m not trying to start drama or anything— I’m just genuinely curious why more people aren’t taking this seriously.

At first I was like this is just a little virus, it will be fine soon enough, etc. But now after watching how much this is spreading and how quickly, I find that really scary. There is a big question of the unknown. They have already said that this is worse than the flu.

Even though it is probably a mild flu and most people can survive it, there are a lot of variables and the health system won’t be able to cope. Plus a part of the population probably can’t cope.

Sure buying toilet paper in copious amounts is ridiculous, but I can see why people are panicking about other things and I don’t think it’s based on media hype. I really do see something bad happening.

I don’t know, maybe my view has changed in the past few weeks with how quickly things have changed here. So much has changed in a week and there seems to be a pattern.

Why do some consider it “media hype” when we can see what it is doing all over the world? Or perhaps it’s just Darwin in action...

Because most people are just self absorbed and only think of the right now...maybe not right way to phrase it, but don't think of the larger ramifications. I'm not an alarmist usually in any situation, but if you look at the statistical data, anyone with common sense realizes we are not at the peak yet in the US...it will get a lot worse in coming weeks. Honestly LI is full of people who only think about themselves. How they don't realize our hospitals cannot handle an outbreak of this magnitude is beyond me.And this is not the flu...just do the minimal of research to figure that out. And I;m not worried for me, but I am worried that I could come in contact with it, like we all will, and pass it on to my older family and my sick family/friends and it could be deadly for them. THAT is my biggest fear. We shouldn't panic, because that does no good, but stop being so damn self absorbed!

And I went to the mall today! EMPTY AF! Was a dream! No searching for a table at the mall food court Chat Icon The only store packed was BBW because they have sanitizer! Which I did stop and get Chat Icon

That sanitizer isn’t enough as it is only a bacterial sanitizer. Smells nice, though.

It's 67% alcohol. It's enough. Of course washing your hands is better.

OK. I don’t have enough to back up my claim. But I just wash and wash my hands. It’s also important to really rub the sanitizer in. I think there is a time limit.

Everyone already knows that hand sanitizer is not effective for this virus, so you don't have to defend yourself....let them all do what they want...it will cull the herd.

From the CDC website

If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.

If it wasn't effective for this virus they would state that, rather than put on their website that it's an alternative when soap and water are not available.
As would all the constant news reports-just like they have been stressing that the masks are not effective.

So, not everyone already knows it's not effective against this virus.

But you are a real joy these days.

Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?

The masks are an interesting point of debate. They can’t protect oneself, but they can protect others. By wearing one they can stop your germs. That’s why they wear them in Asia. They also wear them because it helps keep the throat moist (sorry! I hate that word) when sick. You can get the same results by wearing a scarf. Save the masks for medical personnel.

This pretty much says it all. It's those pushing and ignoring the boundaries that are going to selfishly prolong this and take others down.

People need to do what's being recommended, like avoid unneessary outings and gatherings, and avoid what's discouaged like hoarding.

But because some will act in what they think is their self interest and at the expense of others, we will all suffer.

BTW, a 10% death rate sounds terrifying, especially when young, healthy people have been dying.

Where are you getting a 10% death rate from?
I read this today:

Italy has the highest number of deaths from the coronavirus besides mainland China, with at least 827, and almost 12,500 infections — a fatality rate of 5 percent, compared to the global average of 3.4 percent, according to a report.

The staggering death toll in Italy, whose entire population of 60 million is under lockdown, has prompted many to wonder why so many Italians have succumbed to the illness compared to other countries.

For one, the Italian population is the oldest in Europe, with about 23 percent of the inhabitants age 65 or older — and with a median age of 47.3, compared with 38.3 in the US, according to Live Science, which cited the New York Times.

Many of those who have died in Italy were in their 80s and 90s, a segment of the population that is more susceptible to the ravages of COVID-19.

You shouldn’t be getting a test if you have no symptoms like they said at this same conference. Leave the tests for people who are sick. How many times would he have to be tested also since he is in contact with many people everyday? Makes no sense. He is a very healthy person too so if he does get it, I doubt it will affect him much, just like every other healthy person.

That is not true 10% and how come we don’t hear much about these young healthy people? Or anyone at this point who has died? All fear mongering snd 60,000 people have died from the flu and no one bats an eye at that. Wrong information and the media scaring everyone is why we are in the situation we are in now with problem hoarding things and shutting everything down.

I'm so glad to hear I make such an impression on you Nell. Funny, I come on here , read posts and respond to what I want to and I usually have no idea who has posted what! I never realized people followed others on here so closely. You say I'm nasty, that's fine. But culling the herd is realistic. That's why these viruses happen through the years.

I had read that they were expecting the death rate in Italy of around 10%, much higher than initially expected. It’s speculation though that was not reported as fact...

the media scaring everyone is why we are in the situation we are in now with problem hoarding things and shutting everything down.

Shutting everything down and telling people to stay home is not because of the media. Social distancing is to do what epidemiologists call flattening the curve. It's to slow down the speed of the pathogen so the healthcare infrastructure can keep up and doesn't collapse under its weight. People will still catch the illness but doctors and nurses can manage their workload and aren't so overwhelmed they have to turn sick patients away and let them die. It works. It saves lives. During the Spanish flu cities that enforced social distancing reported fewer deaths overall.

Exactly. If there are only 20 ventilators in a hospital and 30 people that need them—doctors are forced to choose who will possibly die.

There are extremists on both sides. No one seems to have common sense to use that as a baseline when interacting with the rest of humanity. Right here on these threads I see people being like, I'm taking a little bit of extra precaution nothing major, and then you see the other camp being like OMG YOU ARE BEING PARANOID MORONS DON'T YOU DO THAT STUFF ANYWAY OR ARE YOU DIRTY GARBAGE? like the tone is so evident. Surprised you cant see it as you're typing it out it's so snotty sounding.

ETA: I think people should be more worried because the incompetence of our leader. We're being told lies. But now I'll be told I'm wearing a tin hat and need to take my loony pills.
