Taking Pacifier Away??

When should the pacifer be taken away? How did you go about it?
Right now Ava takes it for naps and bedtime. She is 6 1/2 months old and would rather do it sooner than later.

Personally I plan on doing it at 6 mos. Cold turkey. My brother waited until the kids were about 18 months and had issues. Better soon than later IMO.

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

we took it away at 5 months, cold turkey, because of sleep issues.

if he was able to sleep well with it, he would still have it. i don't know what the "right" age is to take it away.

i personally think that all babies look adorable with a pacifier in their mouth Chat Icon even older ones!

Ryan's went away at age 2, cold turkey. He only cried for it for 2 nights and then forgot about it.

Erin, who is 20 months, still has hers for bedtime and we will be doing the same.

DS will be 2 this week and he only has it for naps and bedtime.

When I know he has all of his 2yr molars in then we are getting rid it. I do not want him sucking his thumb

I have no idea, DS is 6 months, but I can't see taking it away just yet. Maybe within the next month or so.

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

I took them away from the girls at 12 months. My oldest went cold turkey and she was fine with that. My youngest I cut the tip off and slowly cut more off everyday until she couldn't suck it anymore. It took about a week and she did great with that.

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

I never took them away from my babies.

#1 gave it up on his own when he was 3

#2 gave it up on his own as soon as he cut his first tooth (9 months)

#3 never used one.

i took it away cold turkey at that age--DS was suprisingly okay (i hid it for my own sake but never needed to use it)

The ENT told us that it was contributing to his ear infections...thats all i needed to hear---i took it away

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

IMHO I think 6 months is too early. Its very comforting and soothing to them as infants so I don't plan on taking it away until she's 2. (She only gets it for naps and bedtime and if she is a little cranky)

I am not really stressing taking it away. My sister had no problems with her 2 kids. my neice - she told her they were mailing them to a baby that needed them. She even got an envelope and had my neice put them in the mailbox. My nephew - she just took then away after explaining he was too big for them.

Same here.

If I was going to take it away at 6 months, I probably wouldn't have bothered giving it to her at all because she/we didn't really get anything out of it until she was around 8 months when she could find it in her crib at night and no longer needed us to plug her back in.

DD is 20 months and we are going could turkey after her molars are in (right now, we have it for emergencies and sleeping). From what I've heard, it will be a couple nights of he!! but that's it and she hopefully won't pick up the habit of sucking her thumb.

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

I took it away cold turkey around 18 months. The first few days were rough, but I never gave in.

ETA: she never sucked her thumb.

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

One year with DD#1, cold turkey and No issues at all. I think for us it was the perfect age.
I threw them out so there was no temptation on my part to give in.

Re: Taking Pacifier Away??

Try and get rid of it as early as possible. I am kicking myself for not getting rid of it sooner. DD is so attached now. If I had taken it away two months ago, we'd be fine, but I didn't and now her and her binky have a darn bond...she calls it. I hear her roaming around the house "binky".."binky". She is 17 months and we are going to have a problem with it now!!
