stomach virus questions for BTDT
so DS is sick. he cant keep solids down and even some liquids are coming back up.
do i keep feeding him liquids even if he vomits them back up? vomited his lunch at daycare yesterday and we picked him up. he also has very bad diarrhea. after we got him home, he had some water which came up. no dinner but we tried pedialyte which he wouldnt drink. (so he pretty much had nothing from 2pm to 7am).
he woke up this am with a bone dry diaper. (slept great BTW, 7pm - 7am) he was screaming for a bottle so i gave him 5oz of formula which he sicked down - drank it so fast and furious that the nipple kept inverting and he screamed when it was gone so i gave him another 3oz which he took down immediately. he cried for more but relaxed when i gave him his paci.
he has kept it down. do i keep feeding him formula? he wont take pedialyte when do i worry about dehydration? DH called and said he had another BM - very loose but not as liquid as yesterday. diaper is still not wet with urine.
guess i should call the ped.

Re: stomach virus questions for BTDT
I would call the ped because of the dry diapers. They told me when I called about her stomach virus that I should watch for wet diapers and if she wasn't making wet diapers to call.
She won't drink pedialyte either- I tasted it and I know why- it tastes horrendous. I don't know how they expect kids to drink that
My ped advised to stay on the formula but my sister's ped switched her baby to a soy formula when he had the virus...they said the milk was no good for the diareha
Call and see what they say.

Re: stomach virus questions for BTDT
When Kiera had it, ped advised no milk until diarrhea subsided ( she only had horrible diarrhea- no vomiting) Since she took the pedialyte with no issues, I didnt give her milk for like 3 days. She didnt eat anything for 3 days either except a slice of cheese.
Since he wont take pedialyte, I'd call the ped to see if you can continue with the formula since he seems to be holding it down. Kiera also woke one day with a bone dry diaper but she was not dehydrated. Feel better baby!

Re: stomach virus questions for BTDT
I would definitely call the ped. I would also check with the ped before you water down his formula, because isn’t he already on a special formula due to his dairy allergy? When Travis had the stomach bug a few months back, we were giving him pedialyte. We were told to give him 1-2 oz every hour because anything more than that he couldn’t keep it down or in. I know you said he wasn’t a fan of one of the pedialyte, but maybe try the popsicle ones. Maybe he’ll like those ones better.

Re: stomach virus questions for BTDT
I would stop giving DC formula all together. Definitely do the Pedialyte. Some say okay with water but my Ped said no water just Pedialyte. DC lived off of Pedialyte for days when he had the virus. Once the diarrhea and vomiting stopped I introduced the BRAT diet slowly. Definitely call the Ped though. DC should have wet diapers. It can be a sign of dehydration.
ETA: DC wasn’t a fan of the Pedialyte pops AT ALL. But he loved the grape flavored drink. Try each flavor until it works.

Re: stomach virus questions for BTDT
No water. It makes them feel more nauseous. No dairy for at least 24 hours after last diarrhea diaper. DS wouldn't drink pedialyte either. We got the ok to put it in white grape juice. No apple juice. Keep trying little bits of food. Cheerios and puffs. When they have diarrhea, you can't tell if they are peeing. DS did end up in the ER for dehydration. They let us go home after 3 hours without getting an iv. We had to followup with the pedi in the morning..

Take him to the pedi first. They can tell if he needs to go to the ER. Check for dry, chapped lips. No tears when crying. Sunken fontenelle.

We just did water with DS - he wouldn't drink pedialyte and it was all he would drink.
Def call the ped since he went 12 hrs without a wet diaper.

Re: stomach virus questions for BTDT
Give him gatorade. My kids hated pedialyte. We keep a stock of orange gatorade in case of stomach issues. Our ped. said it's fine, especially since they LIKE it and want to drink it.
