Re: starting ceral and fruits..a few questions

I started giving Kristina rice cereal in her bottle for reflux at 2 weeks of age.

For meals, I started her out at 2.5 months w/just a teaspoon or two of RC at a sitting along with her bottle.

I went full force on the cereal right before her 4 month well check.

After about 2 weeks of oatmeal (I wanted to give her body time to adjust and it needed it), her ped told me to start on the orange veggies, then go to the yellowish fruits, then the green veggies.

ETA: In the beginning of every fruit or veggie I will give her a spoonful of oatmeal with the fruit or veggie on the spoon a little bit so that she acclimates to the taste. But I don't mix.

Re: starting ceral and fruits..a few questions

We started Matthew on rice cereal at 6 months. He didn't eat much at all the first couple weeks, maybe a couple teasoons, that was about it, and a lot of it wound up on his chin. When we moved on to oats, he seemed more enthusiastic and started eating better. I think we got him to take 2 tablespoons of oat cereal pretty quickly. Then we went to carrots (mainly because I couldn't find barley cereal for a bit). He eata a couple teaspoons ofveggies or fruit starting out, and he pretty quickly moves to a whole jar.

We're sticking with veggies for the most part now and working our way through them since he doesn't care for fruit so much.

Re: starting ceral and fruits..a few questions

I started dd on cereals at 4 months. I started out just once a day but moved to twice a day within a week I think. I followed the directions on the box of cereal at first but it was too much liquid. By the second day I was using more cereal and less formula. I did a week each of the rice, oatmeal and barley and found she liked it best with 2 T rice/oatmeal or barley with about 1 oz formula. We just moved on too veggies. She still has her 2T of rice with the 1 oz formula and about 1 oz of veggies twice a day. Hope this helps!

ETA: I don't mix the cereal and veggies. I wanted to see if she liked it on her own first. Maybe eventually I will but the veggies have always been thick enough for her (I make my own) and she's liked them all so I haven't thought to mix it.

Re: starting ceral and fruits..a few questions

DD started rice cereal a few days after turning 6 months. She started with 1 tablespoon once per day. I think I did that for 3 weeks, then increased it to 2 tablespoons for a week, then added a veggie (peas). After peas we tried carrots and she had an allergic reaction, so for a few days, maybe a week I just gave her rice cereal. Then I introduced oatmeal 2 tablespoons in the morning (rice was at night). Then I tried sweet potatoes with the rice cereal. After that I started intorducing fruit in the morning with the oatmeal.

Now she eats @ 3 tablespoons of oatmeal in the morning w/ 1/2 jar fruit, and @ 3 tablespoons of rice cereal in the evening w/ 1/2 jar of veggies.

Her ped wants her to be eating 4 tablespoons cereal/oatmeal and a full jar of fruit/veggie 2x per day by Sept.

Re: starting ceral and fruits..a few questions

Started DS#2 at 4 months because he was obviously hungry.

He will be five months tomorrow and he eats.

Breakfast - 3-4 Teaspoons Cereal with a little fruit mixed in with a scoop of formula and 2 oz's water.

Lunch - whatever fruit is left in container from breakfast

Dinner - 3-4 Teaspoons Cereal with 3-4 teaspoons of veggie mixed in with a scoop of formula and 2 oz's water

I also nurse him before meals and mid-morning, mid afternoon and right before bed.

I led up to this over a week. At first he started with just cereal and then I deviated from there. I was able to get a sample schedule from my ped which helped me greatly.

Re: starting ceral and fruits..a few questions

I started cereal at 6 months. Started with a few teaspoons and mixed it with formula. Quickly moved on to the cereal with fruit (Gerber sells it) and DS loved this! I moved him up to a few tablespoons 2x a day. A few weeks later we started applesauce and bananas....mixed with cereal, then alone. AFter this I did veggies, then alternated between beginning a new fruit and and a new veggie. Now at 8 months he is up to 1/2 cup cereal a day and about 2 jars of fruits or veggies
