That text vs phone thread got me thinking. Why do we all hate talking on the phone so much ?

I am just not a phone person at all. Prefer to text.

I loathe talking on the phone! Hate it!! If I want to book something or find out more info about something that requires me to actually call someone, I usually just skip it!

Unfortunately; I think its just more convenient.
More comfortable. You dont have to sit with your neck in the most uncomfortable position while you talk on the phone for an hour. And I HATE speaker.

With text; you can multi-task. And read and reply at your own convenience; cleaning, cooking etc..

Although I don't ever mind talking on phone with my mom and my DH.

It's pretty much anyone else. lol

I'm on the phone a lot for my job.

I hate being on it at home because I'm glued to it for much of the day at work.

I like the fact that I can think about what I want to say for a fraction of a second at least. Speaking on the phone, I feel like I'm put on the spot, where I can take my time answering a text

Like someone else said, I can read and reply at my own convenience when texting.

For me, it's my awkwardness. Texting frees me of that.

My DS had an incident with two boys in his class and I texted their mothers to discuss it, and when one of them called me back I nearly hyperventillated.
It ended up being a great thing that we spoke, but still, my initial reaction to hearing my phone ring was to run and hide.

I like texting for most situations but not when a friend is trying to have a long detailed conversation with me. I find it a major waste of my time to text in this situation & will cut it off right there & let her know I will call her or to call me when free.

I'm very anti social and I find the phone breeds awkwardness and searching for things to say and i never know how to end a conversation.

Texting I can do at my own pace, at my convenience and think about what I am going to say next

I hate small talk and I hate BSing. I'd rather just get to the point. I'd also rather spend time with whomever I am with at the time. I find nothing more rude than taking a call when you're in someone else's company. And in the rare instance that I am alone and I want to just enjoy the quiet. You can answer text at your own convenience and its just way more efficient.

I used to be a big phone person but, not so much anymore. I really only use it for certain people, or if what I have to say would come out wrong in a text (or email for work).

First of all - I'd call people I hadn't spoken to in awhile and I would talk way too long!!!

Second - every time I pick up the phone when I am not at work - everyone needs something immediately so I can't really talk to the person anyway.

My free time is on the train and I hate talking on the train because I don't need others to hear my conversation (unless it's something urgent).

I write it off that I'm a receptionist and I talk on the phone all day long so I just have my fill. I hate it! My voicemail message should just be "Please hang up and text me!"

ETA: I don't really mind talking to my mom on the phone either- not sure why that is. Even DH I'd rather not chat on the phone but I guess that's because I see him all the time and he always seems to want to chat when I'm busy at work or with the baby or something.

Shyness, worried about sounding dumb, or being put on the spot & not knowing what to say, and the awkward silence or having nothing to say, and having to constantly pay attention whereas when texting you can be distracted & it's not such a big deal. Also ending a conversation can be tough... this friend who used to call me would literally tell me all his problems for 2 or 3 hours straight... it was torturous but any time I'd try to end it he'd bring up something new & I always felt funny cutting him off... Luckily I don't think I ever gave him my new number.. oh well!

I also want to add that I hate calling people because I always feel like I am bothering them or interrupting them at a bad time.
At least with a text I know they can look at it and answer it whenever they have time- and I'm not interrupting dinner, or something else they are doing.
I get paranoid of being annoying I guess

I was never a phone person even before texting ever existed. I just hate getting stuck on the phone in general, not to mention I usually don't have time to really sit and talk for any length of time anyway.

To answer for myself shyness plays a roll. I get caught up and easily distracted and fumble. I hate it.
Plus whenever I'm on the phone actually talking to someone mynkids need this and that and to tell me something. It's just not easy lol

Funny b/c a dad had called me to see if I can get his son off the the bus one day and when I called him his VM did say to call or text him b/c he doesn't Check his VM's lol

I don't understand it. I love talking on the phone. I can be on the phones with some friends/family for hours. I prefer talking on the phone to text messaging. So much is lost in text.

I have phone anxiety. I have to work myself up for an hour just to call my doctor and make an appointment. Not sure when it happened, its been progressive for a few years.

I think every business should have online chat.

I never liked talking on the phone very much. And now with my kids pretty much constantly yelling and screaming in the background, it is so much easier to just text people. It's more to the point, convenient and usually quicker.
