Yes, I am a proponent of the death penalty, on a case by case basis.

But in all, I have no problem with it.

nope- too many mistakes are made

you can't bring someone back from the dead- but you can let them out of jail

I agree. My brother is a lawyer with a large NYC firm, but does pro bono work defending death row inmates in Alabama. So many should have been released already because of new DNA/evidence, but the flawed system means they remain on death row. Most of the men committed some sort of crime (someone he's defended for years now did rob someone, but someone else actually killed the victim). You can't bring them back from the dead.

And I disagree that prison is not punishment. Rape and brutality run rampant in prison...I don't think most would consider 3 hots and a cot worth what the real prisoners (not white collar, martha stewart-style prisons) go through.

On a case by case basis, absolutely. I think it should be a consideration for repeat child abusers and serial rapists also.

Re: Spinoff: Are you a Proponent of the Death Penalty?

No.

Too many cases of people wrongly convicted and later vindicated. In death penalty cases, vindication may come too late. Even if that only happened 1 in 1000 cases, it's not worth it to me.

Also, I do not feel I am equipped to condemn some one to death. It is not my place. When unspeakable acts are committed do I wish death on that person? Yes, I want to rip their hearts out. However, I could never do it nor could I condone the act by another-this is one of the things that differentiates us from the criminal-the fact that we could never do what they do because we have respect for life.

I agree completely with what Barb said about exercising this punishment stripping our society of its humanity.

Of course, God forbid someone ever did anything to my child my emotions would completely take over and I am sure I would feel differently.
