Southwest changed their family boarding policy

We flew to NY this past weekend and learned of their new policy. They used to let families with children under 4 pre-board. Not anymore. Now if your boarding pass is A, you wait on line and board with the rest of the As. If you have B or C you can board after all of the As board. It was not pleasant. The old way was so much better. I plan on writing a letter about it. I'm not sure how many of you fly with them, but I just wanted to let you know in case you're traveling anytime soon.

Re: Southwest changed their family boarding policy

I think it will be an inconvenience for ALL passengers. I used to be glad (when I was carefree/non-mom) when the babies/carseats/young kids were all set already and in their seat. I think it will delay everyone when you have to board babies/young kids in the middle of adults. Who I might add, could not care less about pushing a kid.

That sux..... I fly out of Midway all the time with them. It was nice knowing that no matter what time we got to the airport we would get to board first. Now we have to make sure we get to the airport early. They might as well do assigned seating.

My SIL, and her three kids, flies them all of the time.

That's not going to go over well with them.

And trust me, the rest of the plane wants families to board first, especially if they are using a car seat. As a single traveler I would not want to wait behind a family trying blocking an aisle, trying to get the car seat in.

ETA: Not sure which airline we are flying next year to Hawaii but I will be boarding with two 15 month olds, a double stroller, and two car seats. The airlines might want to chage their ploicy back by then or all h e l l is going to break lose trying to board that flight.Chat Icon

I agree. With my nephews we always waited until the last call.

It saved us from the "antsy factor".

Unless it's Jet Blue, then we board early and let them zone out in front of the TV.

Exactly!!!! When we boarded coming home we had to go halfway back and DD was a little fussy. The guy who would have been sitting in front of us moved. With the old boarding policy the people boarding after us could sit far away if they chose to. It just makes no sense. Chat Icon

I agree with that when we have an assigned seat, but Southwest is open seating. So if we waited we would never get three seats together.

ITA... how could they not!
Its not like my child is going to sit with someone else. Once they experience problems they will have to assign seats, plus...realistically...why not??? Its not elementary school...a seats a seat. The disabled should go in the front for obvious reasons.

I agree. On the way on home we had A's since we knew to print out our boarding passes early after the flight going there and we still didn't want to stand on line. We had to give DD breakfast. so we ended up boarding at the end of the As anyway. It was just annoying when we had to stand on line in the jetway too. I've heard that they are changing the overall policy in November. I think it's moving to numbers or something.

Plus, car seats have to be in the window seat. Without pre-boarding, some adults may have to move their seats so the carseat can be against the window.... I don't understand the logic behind this... Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are traveling with DD in Nov (she'll be 3 months) and we called a week ago when we heard about the new policy and they told us they would still let people traveling with children under the age of 2 board first but I guess not!

same with us, we always wait to board.

I let him get his energy out in the terminal.

And you still get seats together on Southwest?

Re: Southwest changed their family boarding policy

We just flew southwest and although we really liked the preboarding aspect, it really is not fair to the other passengers that 1/2 the plane is boarded by the time the first person get's on.

One thing that stinks for people in the A group, is that people with kids can sit right next to you.

But the thing is, if you have kids, you need to get A boarding passes. There is no issue if you get on ealry like the rest of the people on the flight.

Overall though they are changin the barding even more in November. They will be boarding by numbers also, so group a1 - a32 will get on first, and so on.

I really liked it and thought I was going to hate it traveling with 2 kids, and having to get the 2 car seats in the seats but it was fine.

Kelly said she's never flown SW, so they probably had assigned seats. That's the only case where I can see why a parent would wait to be the last one to board. I've never had a problem with Nate sitting on the plane after pre-boarding.

You are still boarded before 2/3 of the plane so there is room.

The flight I took to Orlando was full and they had to ask one person to move so a family could sit together, and the switch took 2 seconds.

And regarding the time factor - we left early both times, there was no issue.

I really don't get the concept as to why becuase I ahve children I should be entitled to get there at the last possible second to get in line and get on the plane before 85% of the plane? Chat Icon

I travelled a lot (without kids). It takes some forever for parents to get their kids all set in their seat, etc. especially when mixed with the rest of the passengers. The whole aisle will be stopped. It's just easier to have an empty plane for them to be all set (in my experience!!).

i have traveled by myself and also with children and it is alot easier and alot quicker to get to the terminal without kids than with.. you have more luggage, more people to search at security, more shoes to put on, more strollers to fold to get thru.. ect.. its not always possible to get an A pass.. even getting to the airport 2 hours early!
