I'm glad the teacher followed district policy.
Is it district policy to then call the police? I am quite pizzed that the school nor the teacher thought to do this.
The school is in Woodhaven, Queens
Actually I meant that they needed a note from the parents.
I would think they would be required to call the police ASAP.

I agree. As soon as your niece said "I don't know her", then 911 should have been called.

I'm quite surprised that she would even make it past the office. Our schools in our district only have one set of unlocked doors and there is someone that sits at the doors and takes the licenses of the guests and you also have to sign in at the office. Very scary! I think the school needs to step up their safety standards.
I was thinking the same thing! I can't believe the woman got into the school.

I used to joke about how my mother drilled it into my head that if someone says,"your mom sent me to pick you up," I should still not go with them. I thought my mom was so paranoid but these things really do happen. !

How scary!!!! I remember even when I was in school our parents provided a list of approved people to pick us up. If anyone other then one of those people tried to pick us up they were told no and the authorities were to be notified.

OMG...how scary!! That is my biggest fear, of someone taking my child.
Thank God the teacher knew enough not to release the child to anyone but the parents.

OMG Donna, I really cannot believe what I just read 
I know these things happen but it's still so scary when it happens to someone close in your life..
I hope they get whoever tried to do this!!

I have a question, how did the woman get into the building??? Getting into my daughter's school is like getting into Fort Knox. I would press the principal hard as to how the woman possibly got in and I would also send a certified letter to both the superintendent and the school board, and attend a PTA meeting and bring it up.

Same here. We had a family code word that would be used if someone else said they were picking us up. It was a word my mom and her siblings made up when they were kids so there was no way anyone would be able to guess it. Going to do the same with my kids.

OMG that is so scary. Thats why we pick up DD ourselves and write down a list of people she can go with-family ONLY!
What goes through these peoples mind is beyond me.

Very scary.
I can't beleive the woman could roam around the building unescorted.
Years ago, about 15, when I was interviewing for teaching jobs in Boston ALL schools (no matter what the area, public and private) ALL had security cameras to record visitors and you could not get into a building at all w/o being buzzed in and escorted.
Today, in my district, they are strict the the elementary school but middle and high school security is a joke.
I am so glad she is ok.

OMG-that is one of my worst nightmares.
I would be ****** at the school. All the doors should be locked in the school and they should have to ring a bell to get in. Then they meet someone at the desk and sign in and id before they should be able to get passed. Actually they shouldn't even be able to go to the classroom. They should have to wait in the main office.
How scary. I am so glad she is ok.
