Small moral dilemma - WWYD? [Poll]
I had my car insurance with Geico since 1995. No accidents, only one claim, great payer, no problems. But since they don't do homeowners insurance, I went with a company that could give me both auto and home to save money.
When I canceled my car insurance policy with them back in November, I was due a few hundred dollars in a pro rated refund since I had already paid the policy in full.
Long story short, it took six phone calls and a lot of aggravation and yelling to get that money. I only got the check two months later after threatening a manager that I was going to the Better Business Bureau.
Last week, I got an envelope from Geico. I'm thinking, what's this, a survey on my experience? HAH I'll give em a survey.
But it wasn't a survey, it was a check. For the exact amount of my refund, dated February 12th - weeks after they mailed me the original that had already cleared the bank.
What would you do with it?

I wouldn't deposit it- only because they will realize they already paid you and either stop payment on it or send you a bill for their overpayment.
It has nothing to do with wanting to be nice to them though.

It's not about being nice to them (you don't have to be) or them figuring it out later on (which they will and then bill you for it). It's about doing the right thing.
You don't have any real right to that money. I'd call them and explain that you don't understand what this check is for. Let them tell you what to do - either rip it up or mail it back to them.

Call them and let them tell you what to do with it. This is so they have record of you calling about it, if they ever come after you, you can prove you did what they told you.
You never know, they might tell you to cash it, i've had companies tell me to do weird things.

i agree with most of the other replies.. i would call them and explain the situation. then ask them what you should do with it.
i think if you keep it, it'll catch up with you at some point. they'll either stop payment on the chek, or you'll have to pay it back. so you might as well do it right in the beginning.

I would call them and let them know what happened. No matter what they tell you, I would hold onto it. At some point they're going to ask for that $$ back.

I would call them and ask what the check is for. Then I would deposit it and collect interest off of it until they ask for it back (if they ever do)

I wouldn't , only because I would spend it and then when they wanted the $$ back, I would be screwed
It is not you money, rip up the check, or call them and send it back

Honestly, since they caused you so much aggrevation, I would deposit it and see what happens. If they ask for it back, then you send it back. I wouldn't go out of my way and call them, etc etc...pfft...let them call me.

I would either mail it back with a letter that it was a duplicate payment or I would call them and ask them about it.

that happened to me once, I got reimbursed 2x for an accident. Over $800 too!! whoo hoo!
I kept it, and it was mine forever 
Yeah, I felt a little guilty but that soon passed.
