I guess i am lucky...

i have no problem taking a sick day OR a mental health day Chat Icon

My place is the same way. I am lucky. The last job I was at would complain when anyone took a sick day. They would the proceed to talk about that person all day and thought that the person couldn't be sick.

in my old office, if you were out sick, you were basically on email or the phone all day anway (so you really just worked from home). at my current office, it's a little more acceptable.

It's fine in my office, they are there to use and no one holds it against you or gets angry. I use them when need be and so does every one in my office.

I have 5 sick days and I use all of them. I don't think it is abusing them, I don't call in if there is a deadline. Besides, that is part of the benefits package!

ETA: I take more mental health days than anything. When I am in a mood, it's best that I don't go to work.

I don't think it matters whether people take several sick days or no sick days as long as they meet their billable hour requirement for the year. This is also true for vacation days.

YES. I am not really "allowed" to take sick or vacation time. I always get this Chat Icon Chat Icon when I ask for a day or call in sick. She is crazy. Chat Icon

our vacation days/sick days are interchangeable.

we would rather sick people stay home and leave their germies in their own house.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

coming in sick lowers production by getting others sick - I never understood the concept of not allowing people to call in sick.

I was "spoken" to at a previous job after 3 years, because I had taken 4 sick/personal days off: 2 funerals, 1 moving day and one sick day!!!!

Needless to say, I didn't stay there much longer!

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

We have 10 sick days but are encouraged NOT to use them - we don't get paid for unused days its just they feel you should be very sick to take them. You always have to have a valid excuse and b/c we're a small office and I have a nosy boss - she wants to know why you were out, what is wrong, are you taking meds, etc.

I think its ridiculous in this country people are discouraged from taking the few days they have - it would increase productivity if people took them b/c they'd be more productive when they are there.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

me too! No one takes sick days so if you take one ever you kind of get an attitude - like the people who never take sick days are better or that you are a slacker since you took a sick day. I have taken 1 in the last 2 years Chat Icon

I wanted to add to this thread... I don't think I could ever work for a company that frowned upon people calling in sick Chat Icon

I realize that there are slackers out there who abuse it. but if you are genuinely sick, why come in to the office and spread your germs?? Chat Icon sick days are given for a REASON! if you're sick, STAY HOME.

IMO, any company that has a problem with that needs to read the labor laws. I would never work for a place where I would feel paranoid calling in sick.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

Only my boss gives me a hard time about sick days. I don't usually take them, although DH takes every single sick day he gets.

ETA: I never take a sick day when I'm sick, though (unless I'm dying!).

I work in an enviroment with all men too but sick days are allowed & definately taken! No one questions us at all. There are times that you just need the day.

We also have personal days!

They are allowed, but when you come back the next day it is like getting raked over the coals for being sickChat Icon

That is the one thing I miss about my last job - no one questioned sick days.

Not only do I work with "attendence" police, but apparently, they've all been given the authority to check their watches and time when I leave in the evening.

Hey guess what my hours are?? 9 to None of your effing business.

It's so annoying, it's all about showing face.

Re: Sick days at work- are they "allowed" in your office?

I get five but I'm allowed to take whatever I need. I'm in charge and it's a small operation - so people are far more understanding because it's more 'family' like where I work.

I don't see why people would be penalized at review time for takinga couple of sick days through the year. That's awful to be expected to go in to work and spread the germs around and then bring it home to your spouse or children.
