Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

Where do you feel sex education should be taught?

in the school or in the home?

Yes, I know folks will say both, but if you had to take a stance between the two, which would it be?

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

Both.

I chose "in the home" because I had to choose one, but I think it needs to be both. Parents will put it off, assuming it's being taught at school and vice versa. I think the parents are responsible for teaching values, and the school should be there with facts. The roles are different.

School. Not everyones parents are comfortable enough to teach their kids about sex.

I may get flamed for this but in my situation it would have been better for me to learn at school to learn about it the RIGHT way.

My mom had five pregnancies, with three children and just learned the other day that you can only get pregnant at certain times of the month. She had absolutely no idea about ovulation times or anything like that.

Also, they would have taught me about it being dirty and disgusting and I have my own Catholic guilt to worry about without taking on theirs, thankyouverymuch!

I agree with both of you that is should be BOTH.

If I had to pick one I said "in school" because I feel too many parents will NOT do it. I think the parents today are not as involved in their teens lives. I think it’s a really hard subject for many parents to bring up to their children, so I think if left solely to in home, not too many teens will get the information.

I feel if it’s in school there is a greater chance that more teens would at least have the basics then.

This is why i think it has to be both. There are different roles.

I believe it should be taught at home - I don't know how much more responsibility we have to place on teachers....

At what point do we start it in schools if kids are having sex at the ages of 10/11 now? Not just in High School?

I say both, checked home. I think it is so unrealistic to think our children are not having sex. I think it is sad that some parents DONT have these conversations with their children. I think its sadder to get pregnant TODAY in these times. When you can basically buy Condoms and trident at the same time. You can go to a Planned parenthood place at 14 and get BCP. I think the whole thing is sad. I think these parents need to get over it and SPEAK to their children and we would have less, crime, sex and BS happening.

JMO of course.

This is very true, but so sad (to me.)

Parents should be comfortable with their children and be responsible for their own CHILDREN.

I can't understand (or at least wrap it around my head) that b/c parents don't feel like doing something, or think they can do something - then hey, let's brush it off and let the "government" (ie: schools and teachers) deal with it. I just think it's very irresponsible as a parent.

I agree to every single word here. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't have children, so maybe I'm unrealistic, but what about being PARENTS 100% - meaning you teach your children EVERYTHING in regards to values.

ITA. My mother decided to have "the talk" with me on my way home from my college graduation. Too little too late was the phrase I responded with LOL

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

definitely both.

my mom was always pretty open about discussing it--cause her mother NEVER talked to her about it. even her first period was never talked about until after she had it.

but a combo of both should be happening

Both. I believe it is the schools job to teach about sex. I also think condoms should be available in schools.
I think at home you should teach your kids not to sleep around.

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

For those that said school, I'm curious to know why?

Doesn't sex education fall in the lines of values that are taught to someone? Same lines of religions, politics, etc...?

I think it should be both....

school would teach the "mechanics" of sex whereas at home the feelings/love/morals part of sex should be taught

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

It SHOULD be both...but seldom is...

I know alot of parents who have kids that are 10-12 that haven't had the talk yet, including my BIL & SIL with my 11 yo nephew. There needs to be some discussion by this age.

Unfortunatley emabarassment or "my parents never told me anything" is rampant.

Because, unfortunately, alot of the time, nothing is done at home.

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

Because I'm forced to choose I said school but I generally feel it should be both.

I chose school because kids should understand the basic scientific facts... sex gets you pregnant, you can get a disease, you can prevent both by not having sex/having protected sex.

Also, so many parents are uncomfortable with the topic that they put it off (see the above poster whose mom waited until she graduated from college).

Or they say things that are inaccurate like my ILs who told their kids that God gives you a baby and left it at that.

At home you should learn your morals and values, at school you should be able to get the facts.

ETA: My 16yo BIL was shocked and appalled when he realized that I had sex with his brother (my DH) in order to have DD. He knew about the act of having sex but he didn't know what it caused. Chat Icon

Some people think that way... that educating kids about sex is going to make them have it more. Or giving them access to condoms is going to. The fact is most kids are going to have sex no matter what you tell them. They need to be taught how to protect themselves.
You can and SHOULD teach your kids morals at home just like religion. Chat Icon

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

I think both shcool and at home...

Home should be where kids get the actual information from and school should reiterate and teach the "science" behind it... KWIM?
