SEIT teachers

Sorry for the long post and MANY questions!

I am a NYC teacher currently on child care leave. My DD is 18 months and during my time on leave, I worked on my certification for Students with Disabilities 7-12. I am also certified in math 7-12 and ELA 7-12.

With my certification in Students with Disabilities 7-12 (I am just waiting to see if I passed the CST and then my certification is complete), I was looking to apply to agencies on LI to work as a SEIT or Special Education teacher.

For those who work for an agency, how is the job market for them now? Do I have a chance? Is it going to be harder since I don't have any experience teaching Special Education? I have taught in an ICT setting for 3 years (totally teaching experience is 5 years for NYCDOE), and I have experience teaching math/ELA to students with various disabilities.

Is most of the work at agencies SEIT work? Just curious to hear about your experience with getting a job at an agency and working for one.

Thanks!!

EDIT: Ideally, I would like to work with students with Autism. I am going for a 3 day ABA training in a few weeks.

Re: SEIT teachers

Usually SEIT's are certified in special education birth to grade 2. Usually agencies work with children that are not eligible to attend schools yet. Also, most agencies do early intervention which requires early childhood certification. With high school certification you can do home tutoring for students that might be suspended but I don't think agencies take these cases.

The PP is not correct. There are many agencies that work with students (especially those diagnosed with autism) over grade 2. I have my K-12 cert but right now I have a 17 year old and a 16 year old both diagnosed with Autism. I am also DOH certified in EI but don't do EI right now. Some of the agencies that I or friends of mine work for/have worked for in the past that I believe work with CSE students are Bilinguals, Kidz Therapy, Access 7, NY Therapy, ACE.

ETA: I don't know how the job market is since I have been weaning myself off of doing home care cases since it is only a part time job.

I agree with all of this. I work with older kids too. Achieve Beyond is now bilinguals. There is also Crossroads, Marion K Soloman, Helping Hands, YAI and DDI. The ABA component will significantly help. Good luck. You will also need to get insurance as well. Let me know if you have any questions. I've worked for most.

Re: SEIT teachers

Thanks. When I looked some said they are looking for special education teachers for 7-12. Some said for resource room, which would be different than Bring a SEIT right? How do I get insurance? Do I need that before they will hire me? Thanks for the list of agencies. Some are on my list to apply to. What is a typical day like? In my head I'm thinking they give me cases and I go to the school or home and work one on one with my students, either pushing in or pulling out of the classroom. I would work on their ieps and meeting their goals and work with their classroom teacher. Is this correct? It's all very new for me!

You would need malpractice insurance first....

Forrest t jones is one but there are cheaper ones out there - when you sign on with an agency they usually tell you some companies.

for HS yes you will be doing an hour here and there for resource room or home instruction. You just need to work on building a case load and make sure you aren't driving all over LI though, which can happen once you take on agency work. You also could potentially be working evenings for home cases such as behavior services (which now takes the place of ABA on IEPs) and other developmental delays....

Re: SEIT teachers

Just to add on to the questions...

For those who have DOH letter of approval for EI where did you get your 1600 hours of clinical time?

I am certified b-grade 6 and need those hours to do EI but my years as teaching don't count!

Re: SEIT teachers

Are you sure you need insurance? Isn't that only for EI? Nothing I read said that.

Is it harder to get a job with a LI agency compared to the city?

When I got my DOH letter, I didn't need 1600 hours. I got my DOH letter in 2003.

Most places you will need insurance. I have worked for 80% of the agencies listed here and only one I didn't need insurance for, unless I was a FULL time employee.
I get it through Forrest T Jones too. Most places require a 1 mil/3 mil policy which is 270 dollars per year. In order to get that, you need to be affiliated with an organization. . . I always put council for exceptional children (CEC).

I am not sure about the difference b/t LI and Queens, but I do know that if you teach in a CITY school, you cannot do CITY services afterschool homecases. It is considered a conflict of interest. I am not sure if that also goes for LI. So if you are a city teacher on maternity leave, I am not sure you can do cases in the city .

I was under the impression that you were not allowed to work at all if you were on extended maternity leave. Are you planning to do this instead of going back to your old teaching job or planning to do this for a few years while you are on leave?
I am by no means an expert on this and I hope I'm wrong but I would hate to see you get into trouble if you were planning on eventually going back to your old position.

Good luck!

Thanks. No, I am planning to do this instead of going back to my old job. At least while I continue to have kids, and then after they are in school, I may try to go back to the NYCDOE or another school.
