no offense to any school teachers BUT

I am so pi$$ed at my sons school. being that I live in queens they had to vote on uniforms cause the time was up to do so. We got a note home from what I hear that comes september they have to wear uniforms unless you go up to the school and opt out. I am so f*in pi$$ed right now. I feel bad if I write a note to my sons teacher cause its not her fault but I could scream. I think they gave the note out on a friday so the parents can forget about it by Monday.

How can I get my sons out of this school with out going to private school

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

so you don't want them to go to this school now because they have to wear uniforms? Is it a good school? What would be the difference?
And why would the school teachers be offended, they don't make the rules - do they?

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

this is a NYC public school and it is expensive for a husky size. I belong on the leadership committee and there wasnt an equal amount of parents verse teachers when we did this vote. So I am majorlly pi$$ed at the school not necessarily the teachers. But if any teachers have a suggestion of what to do please HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA: this is the tip of the iceberg with this school so its been biiiuilding.

Were all the parents invited? Because if they were and didn't show up then shame on them. They had a chance to be part of the vote.

I would think a uniform would be better anyway - it's less expensive than regular clothes everyday and everyone is on an equal field - doesn't matter if you have designer or K-mart clothes on.

I wore a uniform for 12 years of school and never had a problem with it.

I have to agree!! Nowadays with different colors kids wear representing gang involvement and the way that some girls dress so provocatively, I would think uniforms would be a great idea!!

That's the part of this post I totally don't get. If you go opt out of it up at school, then problem solved.

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

no problem still not solved from what Iv heard of th eletter you have to physically go to the school talk to someon in order to opt out. while you do that they are going to try and convince you to wear uniforms. If I wanted them to wear uniforms I would go to private school this is PUBLIC school. Plus I miss work to do all this. In other words also not get paid

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

I dont see how Im saving cause when they come home from school they have to change into after school clothes anyway so I still have to buy clothes and since they are growing in everyangle & in every way how is that saving me. Plus, they have to wear schoes. mYolder son has very wide feet and sees a podiatrist.

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

I work in a public school in Queens that requires uniforms, but half the kids don't wear them anyway. The school can't make you wear them... some just wear the shirts, some the pants, by the time the kids are in 4th and 5th grade none of them wear it and they can't punish your son for not wearing them.

I always thought uniforms were a good idea, too.
But if you disagree, why don't you just go to the school and opt out?

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

I remember in one of my undergrad classes a group did a debate on this. School uniforms do come out cheaper. Also, it was shown to cut down on fights, and raise self esteem.

As a student I probably would have hated to have to wear a uniform, but as a teacher I think I would support them.

This is what I was thinking and I also wore a uniform for 12 years of school.

Uniforms were great! I knew what to wear every single day. You also don't need 5 pairs of pants, 15 shirts etc.

I think I had 2 skirts/jumpers and a heck if a lot of shirts. While it seems expensive, I know my mom laid out less in "after school clothes"

It isn't also was not as big a deal that I got what was "cool".

I'm a big fan, but I understand where you are coming from.

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

I work at a private school, so my kids wear uniforms. It is upsetting to think that the school is going to dictate to you what your child must wear, but I do agree that a uniform may be a blessing in disguise. I work with 1st through 8th graders adn I've asked them all at one time or another if they like wearing uniforms, and ALL of them said that it makes life so much easier.

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

I'm sorry -- I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. If it's that big of a deal to you, I'd **** it up and take a few minutes out of your work day to go to school and opt out of it. Perhaps if you call the school and tell them your work schedule will not allow you to go in person, they will permit you to opt out over the phone. I wore a uniform from first to third grade, and while I hated wearing them, I found it much less stressful than worrying about whether or not my clothes were cool enough when I transferred to public school. Good luck!

I agree. And one more thing.... They now sell uniform clothes at Kmart.

One more thing you are going to pull your kids out of school away from their friends over this?

Re: no offense to any school teachers BUT

I too agree with a lot of what has been said! Uniforms definately have advantages and pros! I too, would love it if I had a uniform to wear to work...so much easier! But as someone else said, this seems like a big deal to you, so I would take the time off and go up to the school to do whatever it was that I had to do to opt out. Although, I dont really see why wearing uniforms is such a bad thing?
