Sand/Water tables questions

What are they?

Where do you find sand to fill it?

Which do you recommend?

What else should I know?

TIA!!

Re: Sand/Water tables questions

They're basically a table with a hole in the middle to put sand or water in it.
You can buy one from lakeshore or beckers (check their websites)
I think you can get sand at Walmart.
They're developmentally appropriate for children ages 3 and up. Or if you have a really smart 2 year old that wont eat the sand...lol
Most kids love playing in them.

He is a HUGE fan of eating sand. But he is only 18 months. I thought it was more for a 2 year old. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Sand/Water tables questions

Home Depot sells sandbox sand.
i got one for DD last year, I ended up just using it for water and getting her a separate sandbox. The combo of sand and water in the same table just made a mess.

Joey turns one in May, and my In laws are getting him one for his birthday. We plan on just using water until he is a little older. My nephew used one when he was one with no problem, only water though.

I like the idea of just water. He loves being in water and splashing in puddles, so maybe this is an idea for him during the summer. Chat Icon

That's great that he loved playing in one, some babies develop at faster rates then others, so your baby must be very advanced! Usually children at 1 love to explore by putting things in their mouth, therefore having them use a sand table might not be a good idea since they could eat it. As an early childhood educator I would only reccomend them for toddlers 3 and up, however I have seen some 2 year olds who will play in them just fine without eating the sand. They did not have sand in the 2 year old classrooms in my district. But they do have them in the 3 and 4 year old rooms.

you can also get them at bj's and toys r us. they have some tables with little toys that spin and pour to play with.

i'm still debating which one to get, water or water with a sand side.

when i taught pre-k. i used the sand table as a rice table. imo it's soooooo much less messy and just as much fun. or you can use beans. but again you don't want to do this if your ds will try to put it in his mouth.

Re: Sand/Water tables questions

Every 1-2 year old I have seen playing with these have not eaten the sand, mine included. Throwing it, yes, eating it no. If your worried about eating the sand, you can use both sides as water, it's VERY fun for the kids and I find it to be very developmentally appropriate.

I'm going to get DD one after playing with everyone else's last year, and being that I actually HATE sand, I'll be filling it up with rice Chat Icon

I disagree too. I had a bunch of kids over last summer...ranging from 15 months to 2 years old and didn't have any of them eat the sand. I think your little guy is the perfect age to start playing with a sand/water table.

ETA: They also have a sand box in my dd's preschool and she's in a 2 year old class. I think sand, under supervision, is extremely appropriate. Even my 10 m/o plays with sand without mouthing it.

Which picnic table did you get? The bigger or the smaller one?
Also, to answer the original poster, we held off on the sand, just got a plain water table --DS is 13 months

We have this one, she got it last year for her 1st b-day. We just used water on both sides last year, she LOVED it.

I was just talking to DH the other day about whether we should add sand this year. I think we may (or I do have the turtle sandbox/pool thing that we just used as a pool last year, I may get a bigger pool and could use the turtle for a separate sandbox). Who knows. Chat Icon

We filled the sand side with Old Fashioned Quaker Oats-it was Great!! The oats are nice and light and if dc eats them it's no big deal!Chat Icon
