s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

This is a spin off from the leasing thread - thought it would be a good poll because right now I may need to consider leasing a car instead of financing..

our situation is - DH and I have our own cars. Neither of us have loans on them (both are older cars, 1998 - 2007 models)..But if I lease, it will be just my car..
where do you fall?

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

For the next 3 weeks, we have 3 cars:

1) Lease - it's due back in November.
2) Own outright - DH's car, it's a 2003 3) Finance - CPO 2009 to replace the leased car

We decided that buying/financing was going to work better for us. I we bought/financed a CPO car because it was a lot more affordable for what I wanted. Running the numbers, the monthly payments for the CPO with some money down, came in lower than lease payments for the same car brand new (with no money down).

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

DH owns his car, I have a payment on mine bc we bought it 2 years ago. Before this car, I had my car for 8 years (4 of those with no payment).

We finance when buying new cars and use them until we absolutely need new ones.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

Right now we own both of our cars and have been payment free for almost 3 years.

BUTTTTTT now my car bit the dust and it's time for a new, reliable, BIGGER car to accommodate DD so we're starting to shop around.

I think we'll end up leasing.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

I could never lease a car. I completely modified DW's car, and I've added quite a few modifications to my truck as well. Not sure if the dealer would appreciate the changes I made as much as I do.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Can you explain why you lease if you know you will buy it at the end? Not trying to be snarky, but genuinely curious why you wouldn't just finance it? Is there a benefit to doing it this way? We are starting to look for a new car soon.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

we own DH's car (2001 model)

Just bought a mini van 3 weeks ago and traded in my car (2000 model) that I owned outright for years..

So we financed the mini-van and have payments after not having any for BOTH cars for YEARS! That is going to take some getting used to!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So i voted "a combo" - own (Car 1) and finance (car 2)

Own a 2004 and 2007 model year car. No payments. I paid for the 2004 in cash that I saved for. We financed the 2007 one with 0% interest and it is completely paid off.

because the payments are already a lot of money, it would have been more if we financed right off the bat we wouldnt have as long to pay it off.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

We always buy, never lease. I don't need to get all the bells and whistles so that lure of more car for a lower monthly number doesn't do it for me. I would rather drive a car I can easily afford, have the option to sell it or keep it forever and be able to insure the way I feel suits my needs. I typically keep my cars for a very long time, however I recently traded my 3year old car in because I owned it outright and the dealer made me an offer I could not refuse while I was getting the oil changed. They offered me 0% on the difference for the new car, it was crazy not to take it . DH's car is a CPO that he bought outright.
The lifetime car payments due to leasing don't appeal to me in anyway.
We both drive too many miles for leasing anyway.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

Other:

I finance, but pay them off much faster than the note.

I got both my tribute and my mazda6 in 2005. April was the mazda6 and it was paid off by Oct, in full. 5yr note paid in 9m.

The truck we got in Dec of 2005 paid in full by Feb 2009 (it was a 5yr note paid in 3yrs)

We are buying a 3rd vehicle in the next two months. It will be another Mazda6. We play to pay 60% in cash, finance the last bit. The note will be 3yrs. Hope to pay it off in 2.

I prefer financing as it gives me an option to make payments but still gives me the control of just paying it off.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

My car is leased. I like having a new car every few years and my commute is 10 miles round trip to the train station.

We have a few payments left on DH's car. When my lease is up I will probably take his car as a station car, and we'll finanace or lease something new for him to drive.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

We own DHs truck outright and I just leased a new car.

I have alaways leased until my last car and will never buy a car again.

I like the low lease payments and being able to get a car every 3 years. Plus there is almost no maintenance since they are always new.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

Both DH and I own all our vehicles outright. My 2008 Honda was purchased in cash.

I am not a fan of leasing, and would try to avoid it if possible. I dont like the idea of a long term rental on a depreciating asset like a car. A ny payments I would have made on a lease actually went toward my student loan payments, and thanks to that, I will have completely paid off all my stuident loans by next year. That would never have been possible if I was coughing up $ 250-400/month toward a car.

Re: s/o thread- Leasing/Financing Car Poll

I own my car (just paid off 6yr financing in 4yrs)

We finance DH's car. His car will be paid off in 3yrs and I'm hoping we'll have a couple of years with no payments before we HAVE to get a new car. I also said that I would buy a used car next time around rather than a new one.
