Required reading for sixth grade.

Last year I taught 5th grade (coming from Kindergarten) and was told that it is a NYS requirement for the fifth grade children to read 20-25 books throughout the school year. I kept a chart in my room, kids kept a log and most of them met the requirement.
Now I am moving on to sixth grade (same students), pardon my ignorance with middle school, but is it a NYS requirement for sixth graders to read a certain amount of books throught the school year that I have to keep track of just like last year?? Thank you so much...hopefully I'm making sense!

I teach middle school and my students are required to read 25 books during the year. They are special ed, so, we try our best to reach that goal but not everyone does.

I was never told it was a NYS requirement though, I thought it was just my school!

See I thought it was a school thing too until the beginning of last year when a parent told me that I "better do it" because it was a NYS requirement.
