Repost from Pregnancy- Upset with Dr.

I am giving some back information....My DS was two years old last week. I was originally due the day after Thanksgiving so from about September on my Dr. was talking C-section. He said the baby was transverse then breech and it just seemed like everytime there was a different story. I went in there one day with my DH and asked if I could not have the c-section and he said no because of the size of the baby and I could be putting the baby at risk for shoulder dysplasia, etc. After hearing that I was worried and would never want to put my child in danger. One time I had to go to L&D and there was a high risk doc there and he said he saw no reason why I needed a c-section. I still went along with what my doc said because I was schedule for the week later. I still think that I really didn't need the c-section, my son was 8lb 14 oz

Fast forward to this pregnancy. I am due in March and all along in my mind I have wanted a VBAC. Today at my appointment I planned on talking with my doc about my thoughts. He said to me first, we are going to have to schedule your c-section. I said do I have to have one. He said yes since you had one and your son was on the big side and I am sure this one will be big too. He said back in the day many more doctors did VBACs because if a baby was breech and the mother had a section then she would not need another section. I am so upset about this. I stuck with this doc who is in Westchester and I am living on the island now. I really thought I would get the chance to have a vaginal birth and it doesn't look that way. I would love to change practices but 1- I do not know if someone would take me this far into the pregnancy and 2-I would feel terrible if god forbid something happened at the vbac and I didn't go for the section.

Any thoughts? Any other ladies have a scheduled c-section? Thanks!

I would get another dr. You need to feel comfortable with his decisions and if you feel that the C-section wasnt needed the 1st time you will end up questioning everything he does with this pregnancy.
There are a lot of excellent drs out there, you dont have to settle on one you doubt.
Good luck!

I would definitely look into finding a new doctor or maybe even a mid-wife. I am not that familiar with V-BAC but I thought you could have them. I wouldn't trust this doctor at this point.

i would do alot more research on the VBAC topic if i were you.. I don't want to start any drama at all and of course the decision is up to you.. but sometimes doctors know best.. VBAc does have its compllications. and they are not benign. Your doc may know something about you that the L& D doc didn't.. ie: the shape of your pelvis ..ect. Shoulder distocia is a very real complication for big babies.
BTW, i did not have a csection i had 3 vaginal births...and i cannot imagine what you are going thru. i am just a NICU nurse and have seen some of the complications.

While you bring up some excellent points I just wanted to add that there are just some doctors that just seem to be anti v-birth (not even talking about VBAC, just in general) I'm an L&D nurse and there are just some doctors/practices with higher c-section rates than average. For whatever reason it is I think if someone just doesn't feel comfortable with their doctor then they shouldn't feel obligated to continue being their patient. You have to do what is best for you and your baby.

i absolutely agree with you.. i'm not talking about the csection she had in the first place. Like you said some dr.s just do csections to do them.. but that's in the past for the OP... what i'm referring to is the VBAC she wants to have. Just telling her to do more research on that topic... not necessarily to stay with her dr. that she feels uncomfortable with. Believe me, i'm not in the practice of defending any doctors...Chat Icon

i know for a fact that my doctor will not do a VBAC. Maybe doctors refuse them. I had a c-section and when I was still in recovery my doc said to me next child will be a scheduled c. Your doctor should have brought this up at your first visit.

I would absolutely look for another doctor. I think I answered another post of yours last night, but I had a VBAC with my DD in May 06, exactly 2 years after I had my son in May 04. My son was a c/s because he was breech, and guess what? He just happended to be BIG as well (9 lbs 7 oz and nearly 3 weeks early!). His size had no bearing on why he was a c/s, and had no bearing on my ability to try for VBAC with my DD (who was born at 38 weeks at 7 lbs 11 oz).

While they do give you the fact (uternine rupture statistics are soo small!), I thought it was a much better way to go than to have a surgical birth for no real reason.

And it is rare. Some of the nurses where I delivered where stunned when I told them I had a VBAC because docs aren't too readily into them. I am glad mine was 1000% supportive!

FM if you want more info!

Trish
